RE: UNIT 4 - TASK 5 - SAFETY AND SECURITY IN TRANSPORT

Once the new Warehouse is established, goods will have to be moved from Jumna to
Chagong. The existing journey between Mugla and Chagong does not present many
problems, from a security point of view.

However, this will be a much longer journey than the current one, through a different part of
the country. Also, it means that the trucks will have to be parked overnight somewhere along
the route. You have been told that there is a freight interchange compound on the road from
Jumna to Teni that is used by a number of Hauliers.

As part of the preparation for this change, you are now required to do two
things:

1. Prepare a check list of things that will need to be in place at the

proposed location to ensure the safety and security of the truck, its load,
and the Driver

Freight interchange compounds are mainly established for whether taking rest in the
long journeys or for swapping the land transport modes in case of unsuitability of the
used modes with nature of the roads afterwards . Such compounds are usually
operated whether by privately owned companies or by the governmental sides .
Actually , such long journeys and the need for stops over in fright interchange
compounds are involved with risk that needs assessing for the purpose of mitigating
it . In other words , the security and safety of the Trucks ,its load, and driver is of
utmost importance and must be given high level of concern and care . Therefore and
to this end , the following safety and security tools and requirements should be in
place at the proposed location :

 Large Parking with enough capacity for receiving the different types of the
land land transport modes that is used in the country .

 The Compound including the assigned vehicles park must be surrounded

with high and strong security fence .
 Installed CCTV cameras in the compound corners and edges , the entrance
and exit gates , and the loading and unloading areas .
 All the standard safety tools must be in place for upgrading the level of
safety in the compound.
 Availability advanced or functional access control systems that includes
checking and recording the land transport modes during the entrance and
exit process .
 Well -trained and trustful security guards existence and in enough number .
 Registering the arrival and departure of the land transport modes in
accordance with official forms that are given to the drivers that includes the

 time of arrival, the land transport mode type, its plate number , the type of
load etc .
 Having enough and secure rooms for accommodating the drivers .
 Having suitable lightening system .

2. What security measures would you plan to put in place to safeguard the
truck, its load, and the Driver, en-route between locations?

 Using well- maintained land transport modes and checking the

maintenance records of the modes before movement to avoid any stop for
the vehicle in any potential dangerous areas on the way ahead .

 Installing tracking devices on all land land transport modes that might be
used by SCILiad .
 Having control room for tracking the modes while on their journey ways and
for exchanging information with drivers from one side and with the
concerned staff internally who are concerned with the security and safety
functions .
 Having list of the recommended freight interchange compounds that might
be used by the drivers .
 Signing contracts with the most secure and safest freight interchange
compounds that involve obligations and rights of the two parties , SCILaid
and the interchange compound .
 Using the most suitable packaging and consignment and the right land
transport mode that suits the nature of the loaded goods .
 Checking the load and the way it is placed inside the mode before
movement .
 Checking the safety and security tools before movement .
 Ensuring the land transport modes are tightly and safely closed .
 Using well -trained drivers who know the road network in the country .
 Training the drivers in safety and security matters to ensure they are able to
deal with safety and security problems successfully .
 Keep the drivers updated about any changes while they are on their
journeys to avoid any risk that might be raised due to any home-made
incidents or those natural ones that make the land transport mode , the load
and the driver in risk .
 Providing the drivers with durable - battery mobile phone devices and
charging kits to keep in connection along the way .In some cases , it is

 better to provide them with dual SIM cards mobile to avoid any coverage
connections problems of the mobile telecommunication operating
company .
