My name is Hosbaldo Lopez-Velasco, and I am an Information Science major with a

specialization in web design. Information science is a large field with various different parts that

all revolve around information and how people interact with it. I have always had a passion for

technology and computers specifically which is why I hope to become a data analysts or web

designer which both are in the field of information science. Web designers are part of the flow of

information between people and the internet as they design the pages and format the information

that will be consumed by users. Data analysts interpret a large amount of data collected and

attempt to find trends or possible connections to a bigger picture. The world revolves and

depends on information to be constantly flowing and creating innovations that affect peoples

lives. I selected this path of information science because I want to be a part of advancement that

occurs through information science and technology, I hope to one day be able to use what I know

to create positive changes.

I do have experience in my career area of information science through work and school.

For starters I have been in a variety of web design courses with a variety of purposes ranging

from what should be on a webpage to how to create a webpage with HTML, CSS, and

JavaScript. Through these courses I have gotten a sneak peek into the professional world of web

development and its complexities such as its inclusion of both business and technical aspects. I

have also been programming for years in various different languages for years and while that has

no direct relation to the position of a data analysts, I believe that through such experiences I have

acquired a very good sense of data which can appear in various forms and store so much

information. Lastly, I have worked at the USF (University of South Florida) library for three

years where I have been able to learn about databases, research, and information systems through

first hand experience, and these concepts play huge roles in information science such as with
data analysts who must have a very good understanding of them to be able to find the patterns

they are searching for. Prior to this assignment I had never visited the USF careers service

website, but it is a very interesting resource as it provides dates of events such as job fairs and

resume reviews while also offering general information on a variety of careers. I have yet to

participate in an internship, but I do hope to do so, and the USF career service website may help

with that. I have research about my future career for assignments, but the best resources were

talks and speeches presented by people who work in the field, and I have attended a couple of

these events which offered me an honest and inside view of what the professional world is like.

As of right now my plan is to find an internship in information science, preferably one

about web design or data analytics but any internship would interest me as long as it is in the

field. I will apply online and go to career fairs to complete this task as those seem like some of

the more effective ways to get noticed. Afterwards I would hope to get a full-time job and work

my way up in whatever position or company I work for. Information Science to me is a field that

will only continue to grow, and I want to be a part of what It can bring to the world. I have

already gotten a good amount of experience related to the field and I believe that will aid me to

become a good hire for anyone who gives me a chance.
