Part 3
Questions 19 to 26

You are going to read an extract from an article. For questions 19 to 26, choose the correct
answer (A, B, C or D) and mark the correct letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet.

As an Asian working abroad as a lecturer, I often discuss with my students whether teenagers
should be allowed to make decisions regarding their future. Most of my Asian students
disagree, as they do not get the chance to decide what to do with their lives. However, my
Caucasian students feel that there shouldn't be any debates about it. To them, this is the most
natural thing. Most of them are even expected to find their own path in life by the age of 19

Teenagers, in my opinion, are capable of making sound decisions for their future if they were
given the opportunity to 'start small' since young. Most of my friends who are in boarding
schools in Johor were trained to make decisions by their parents. They were gradually given
more control of their lives as they grew older. From choosing their own bikes at five to
deciding which school they want to go to at twelve; they had to weigh the pros and cons, with
sound advice from their families. At the end of the day, they made their own decisions. If the
bicycle broke down before time, they would be reminded to consider all factors when

1119 / 1 SULIT
SULIT 1119 / 1

deciding on a purchase in the future. Most importantly, they recalled fondly how the adults
dealt with their regrets and disappointments. This helped them build their self-confidence.

As they grew up, more decisions were entrusted upon them and more opportunities given to
learn from mistakes. This gradual shift in power (from parent to child) provided them with
the time and space to accept the consequences of making wrong choices. I have also
witnessed some of them learning the hard way from their mistakes and becoming more
cautious in making the next decision. Adopting this decision-making process from a young
age, I believe, is the way to go! It will help them as they step into adulthood later on in life.

Nevertheless, it is important for parents and family members to keep teenagers well-
informed. This can be done by giving them as much information as possible and presenting
them with possible consequences if they make the wrong ones. Face-to-face discussions on
the details, benefits, risks and expected outcomes of each choice is a great method to help
them make better decisions. Everyone loves listening to the experience of others; so parents
can also share their personal experience with their teenaged children to help them learn from
the past and avoid making the same mistakes. It is also important to make teenagers realise
that there is no perfect decision, as every decision usually involves trade-offs-all they need to
do is choose the better one of two options. Having unrealistic expectations may affect their
self-confidence in the future.

I also have friends who grew up with uninvolved and absent parents. In both situations, my
friends grew up without much emotional, physical and mental support from their family
members. However, most of them turned out to be independent and successful in life.
Knowing that they had no one else to blame but themselves made them wiser and more
careful.

Furthermore, many teenagers today already have good exposure from young-travels abroad,
charities and even making friends from all over the world. Exchanging opinions with people
from all walks of life helps teenagers develop their personalities and discover themselves
from an early age. This allows them to understand themselves better. The Internet and social
media platforms may broaden the perspective of young, eager minds and prepare them for the
future. Many Asian parents with traditional parenting styles prefer their children to pursue
courses that could secure high-paying jobs such as law and accountancy. However, many
teenagers know that soft skills are more useful in the future. They may have better prospects
pursuing their own interests, making full use of their talent and personal strengths. In this
case, determined and street-smart teenagers may have the advantage and may be able to make
better decisions. Nevertheless, this does not mean that parental involvement is no longer
needed. Parents may provide teenagers with emotional and even financial support to give
them a head start in life.

19. In paragraph 1, why does the writer use the phrase this is the most natural thing?
A. His Caucasian students do not like having debates.
B. His Caucasian students have to make their own decisions.
C. His Caucasian students have to leave home at the age of nineteen.

Questions 27 to 32

You are going to read an article about a writer’s new leisure activity. Six sentences have been
removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (27
to 32). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.

Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet.

My New Hobby

Everyday leisure activities like going to the cinemas and window shopping at the malls are
becoming less possible since the start of the pandemic. Today, many Malaysians are going for
simpler and solitary activities like walking and hiking. These activities can be done alone and
not in big groups. My family and I decided to try out cycling

We started off renting bikes at a nearby bike shop which offers varied rental periods for
different types of bicycles. There are bicycles for different trails and routes but they can be
very expensive. 27 My father already owned a second-hand cyclocross bike that he
could cycle on a wide range of terrain.

Our first ride was in Kuala Kubu Bharu, which is 70 km away from the capital city of Kuala
Lumpur. We travelled there on a KTM train with our bikes, which was really exciting! After
30 minutes, we got off at Serendah Komuter station and began cycling on a single lane trunk
road until we reached rows of old colonial-style buildings. 28 They also shared the
fascinating history of the sleepy town, which was once a thriving British outpost.

Soon, we stopped over at a local cafe for a short break – a shophouse decorated with various
kinds of antique clocks. 29 Then, we cycled up a further 12 kilometres to reach The
Sticks, a popular camping spot, where we wanted to spend the night.

After the weekend getaway, my confidence grew and several episodes of flat tyres later, I was
ready to purchase my own bike. 30 Having spent a lot on those accessories, I
promised to be committed to this new hobby to get my money's worth. There were some
accidents involving cyclists reported lately and my parents always remind me of the basic
etiquette.
31 Some cyclists enjoy the scenery too much that they often neglect looking out for
cars on both sides, and potholes too! I get worried when I see cyclists stopping in front of
cars at the traffic lights instead of keeping to the side.

Now, I ride regularly and have been on long-distance rides to many beautiful places with
groups of like-minded nature-lovers and bicycle enthusiasts 32 Most importantly, I
have met so many incredible people whom I shared beautiful memories with while exploring
the hidden gems in Malaysia.

Being a timid beginner, I rented a foldable bike while my mother went for a hybrid.

C.
Since most roads have good shoulders, cyclists should not ride too close to vehicles.

D.
Apart from cycling in a row, we must ride with traffic and not against it.

E.
We had the best curry puffs which we ordered from the bakery opposite.

F. Cycling for two to four hours a week can help build your muscles and increase your
stamina.

G.
It was a nostalgic ride for my parents who had spent their childhood there.

As a bonus, I lost some weight and even developed some muscles.

Teens on TikTok App

A-MARINA, 16 years old

Many parents don't like the TikTok app and think that it is a waste of time. Luckily, my
parents are sporting enough to allow us to download the app. They supervise my siblings'
account and select the kinds of videos to watch. They even list songs that we can listen to,
and mostly they are songs we already know from the radio. Sometimes, our parents even
join us for a dance. I never knew my parents can be so fun and hip!

science teachers upload many educational videos because they know that TikTok is our

Until now I can't believe that my grandmother is on TikTok too, and she was the
headmistress of a prestigious school. There are so many informative videos on the app
that teach us life skills. For example, how to take care of our vehicles and even cooking
tips. Her favourite TikToker is the TikTok doctors who helped her overcome her insomnia.
She is also into home décor now, thanks to the app!

I'm an only child and my parents are always busy with work. Despite my introvert nature,
