Questions 27 to 32 are based on an article about plastic waste.
Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which
fits each gap (27 to 32). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. Mark your
answers on the answer sheet.
A Plastic Ocean is a film that makes us think and act. Since the 1940s, massive quantities of
plastics have been produced. Bottles, shopping bags, toiletries and even shoes are made with plastic.
27 What happens to all the rest? This is the question the film A Plastic Ocean answers. It is a
documentary that looks at the effect that plastic waste has on the environment and it is shocking.
The film begins as a journey to film the largest animal on the planet, the blue whale.
However, during the journey, the filmmakers, Craig Leeson and Tanya Streeter, make the shocking
discovery of a huge, thick layer of plastic floating in the middle of the Indian Ocean. 28 In
total, they visited 20 locations around the world during the four years it took them to make the film.
This film was premiered in 2016, and is now on streaming services such as Netflix.
It’s very obvious that a lot of research went into the film. There are beautiful shots of the seas
and marine life. 29 We see how marine species are being killed by all the plastic we are
dumping in the ocean. The message about our use of plastic is severely clear.
30 In the second half, the filmmakers look at what we can do to reverse the tide of
plastic flowing around the world. They present short-term and long-term solutions. These include
avoiding plastic containers and ‘single-use’ plastic products as much as possible. 31 The
filmmakers also stress the need for governments to work more on recycling programs, and look at
how technology is developing that can convert plastic into fuel.
We make a surprising amount of plastic. In terms of plastic bags alone, we use five
hundred billion worldwide annually. Over 300 million tons of plastic are produced every year, and
at least 8 million of those are dumped into the oceans. 32 Once you’ve seen A Plastic
Ocean, you’ll realize the time is now and we all have a role to play.

Janet and Peter, a young couple with a baby, are interested to buy a house. Below are six different
houses they have viewed and the descriptions of each house. Read the texts below and answer the
questions that follow.
B – STUDIO APARTMENT
This apartment is right in the town and has everything Janet and Peter need. It is a compact, partly
furnished and priced within their budget. However as in future, it is not suitable for a growing
family as they have a baby and need more space later on.
C - BUNGALOW
This twelve-year-old bungalow is located in the outskirts of town. Janet and Peter will take about
50 minutes to travel from home to work. The house is partly equipped with five bedrooms, a
dining room, a living room, a kitchen, three bathrooms and a large basement. The back yard is
also huge. However, the asking price is a little over their budget.
D - APARTMENT
The couple viewed an apartment on the 12 th floor of a nice well-maintained building. It is in the
middle of the city, which is quite busy and noisy. The apartment has two bedrooms and one
bathroom, a kitchen, a living room and a parking space in the basement. This price is quite
expensive. It is because of the location and accessibility.
E – DOUBLE-STOREY HOUSE
This place is about 15 minutes away from their office. The house is fully furnished and well-
maintained. It has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen, a living room, a dining space, and a
nice back yard. This property also suited their budget.
F - TOWNHOUSE
This place is about two blocks away from their workplace. It is not furnished but it has three
spacious bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room. The price is in their budget.
However, there is only a small porch and no garden or back yard.
