Critique Paper.

- Learning Outcomes
- Here are our learning outcomes, everyone
please read…

At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:

a. define critique paper,
- (learners read the learning
b. identify the four approaches in writing outcomes)
a critique; and
c. create a one paragraph critique paper
about the film/ movies or stories

- What did you do earlier?

- We are tasked to examine an

image/film.
- That is right. You recall a certain film and
examine it.

- Now, let’s discuss what is a critique paper.

- A critique is a genre of academic writing that

briefly summarizes and critically evaluates a
work or concept.
- There are critical approaches in writing a
critique paper:

CRITICAL
APPROACHES
IN WRITING A Definition
CRITIQUE
Formalism
● claim that
literary works
contain
intrinsic
properties and
treats each
work as a
distinct work
of art.

● it posits that
the key to
understanding
a text is
through the
text itself; the
historical
context the
author, or any
other external
contexts are
not necessary
in interpreting
the meaning.

Feminism
● focuses on how
literature
presents
women as
subjects of
socio-political,
psychological,
and economic
oppression.

● how aspects of
our culture are
patriarchal, i.e.,
how our
culture views
men as
superior and
women as
inferior.

Marxism
● concerned with
differences
between
economic
classes and
implications of
a capitalist
system, such as
the continuing
conflicts
between the
working class
and the elite.

● attempts to
reveal the
ultimate source
of people’s
experience is
the
socioeconomic
system.
Reader response
● concerned
criticism
with the
receiver’s
reaction as
an audience
of a work.

● claims that
the reader’s
role cannot
be separated
from the
understandin
g of the
work; a text
does not
have
meaning
until the
reader reads
it and
interprets it.
Readers are
therefore not
passive and
distant, but
are active
consumers of
the material
presented on
them.

- For example, in the story of Dead Stars by

Paz Marquez Benitez

(Play the video)

Formalism Approach
The story's title already hints at the concept that the
light from distant stars, which takes years to reach us,
might originate from stars that have already
exploded. This metaphor is used to symbolize
Alfredo's love for Julia, whose names reflect their
characteristics and eventual fates. While Alfredo's
name suggests wisdom, his actions, like courting
Julia while engaged to another, contradict this
perception. Julia's name, denoting youthfulness,
mirrors how Alfredo initially perceives her, but
reality eventually confronts him.

Feminism Approach

The story effectively portrays the gender-based

power imbalance ingrained in Filipino society.
Initially, it depicts Don Julian and the judge as male
leaders in their professions, while women are
relegated to domestic roles. However, the central
theme of Alfredo's enduring love for Julia, despite
being married to another, highlights the power
dynamics, with Alfredo's feelings creating a rift in his
marriage to Esperanza. This imbalance reflects not
only societal norms but also how men often dominate
not just in the household but in their relationships
with women.

Marxism Approach

Despite its brevity, "Dead Stars" skillfully develops

various emotional layers leading to its conclusion.
While the story primarily revolves around Alfredo,
female readers cannot help but empathize with
Esperanza, who is seen solely through his perspective
and the lens of his lost love. However, Alfredo's
unfaithfulness and the constant shadow of Esperanza
in the background during his moments with Julia
intensify the reader's sympathy for her, culminating
in a profound sense of betrayal when Alfredo's
epiphany comes to light.
Reader Response Approach

The short story highlights the societal power

imbalances by illustrating how characters are treated
based on their social class. This is most evident when
comparing the circumstances of Alfredo and his new
love, Julia, with those of Calixta and her live-in
partner. While Alfredo's infidelity faces minimal
direct criticism, Calixta is labeled "ungrateful" for her
actions, emphasizing how individuals from different
social backgrounds are judged differently despite
similar situations. In this context, Alfredo faces far
fewer consequences for his actions, whereas Calixta
is held accountable not just to her family but also to
her master's household.
