• Upload the file to A2L under the Assessment->Homework #3.

1. What is the combined effect of the earth’s curvature and mean atmospheric fraction in a
distance of 200 ft? In a distance of 4000 ft? In a distance of 8.5 miles? In a distance of 30.0
miles?
2. Calculate the combined effect of the earth’s curvature and refraction for the following
distances: (a) 150.00 m; (b) 400.00 m; (c) 1.50 km; (c) 150.0 km.
3. A backsight of a temporary B.M. at a horizontal distance of 1100.5 ft is 1.25 ft and a
foresight from the same instrument setup to a turning point is 8.594 ft at a distance of 50.0
ft. Compute the difference in elevation between the temporary B.M. and the T.P.
4. Two points, A and B, each are distant 1500 ft from a third point, from which the measured
vertical angle to A is +4°21′ and that to B is +0°32′. What is the difference in elevation
between A and B?
5. Two points, A and B, are 1200 ft apart. The elevation of A is 615.03 ft. A level is set up
on the line between A and B at a distance of 200 ft from A. The road reading on A is 10.52
ft and that on B is 1.45 ft. What is the elevation of B?
6. Complete the differential level note that follow, putting the entire set of notes in proper
filed note form and making all the customary checks. All units are in meters.
Station B.S. H.I. F.S. Elevation
B.M.a 0.232 55.482
T.P.1 0.503 3.892
T.P.2 0.212 3.524
T.P.3 0.246 3.302
T.P.4 2.169 0.257
T.P.5 2.895 0.678
T.P.6 2.912 0.202
B.M.b 1.423
7. The data for profile levels, in the order taken, are B.S. on BM30 = 1.980, I.F.S. on 0+00
(top of hub) = 2.754, I.F.S on 0+20 = 1.50. F.S. on T.P.1=0.175, B.S. on T.P.1=2.875, I.F.S.
on 0+40=3.29, I.F.S. on 0+60=2.10, I.F.S. on 0+80=0.98, F.S. on T.P.2=0.188, B.S. on
T.P.2=2.098, I.F.S on 1+00=2.87, I.F.S on 1+10=1.53, F.S. on T.P.3=0.094, B.S. on T.P.3
= 2.950, I.F.S on 1+20=1.50, F.S. on 1+24.50 = 1.000(hub), B.S. on 1+24.50 (top of
hub)=1.500, F.S. on B.M. 40 = 2.365 m. The elevation of B.M. 30 and B.M. 40 are 128.301
and 135.892, respectively. Prepare the profile notes, make sure that all the necessary checks,
adjust the H.I.’s in proportion to the number of setups, and calculate the elevations for all
stations. Units are in meters.
