GREEN BUILDING INDEX

 The Green Building Index is a recognised

green rating tool for buildings to promote
sustainability in the built environment and
raise awareness among developers,
consultants, contractors and the public on
environmental issues and responsibility to
the future generations.
ABBREVIATIONS in GBI
 INC – Industrial New Construction
 IEB – Industrial Existing Building
 NRNC – Non-Residential New Construction
 NREB - Non-Residential Existing Building
 RNC – Residential New Construction

GBI

1) Energy Efficiency (EE)

 Improve energy consumption by optimising building
orientation, minimizing solar heat gain through the building
envelope, harvesting natural lighting, adopting the best
practices in building services including use of renewable
energy, and ensuring proper testing, commissioning and
regular maintenance.
GBI
2) Indoor Environment Quality (IEQ)
 Achieve good quality performance in building:
indoor air quality, acoustics, visual and thermal comfort.

 Use of low volatile organic compound materials, application of quality

air filtration, proper control of air temperature, movement and humidity.

 Impact on energy use and well-being of the occupants and users of the
building

 IEQ involve in several aspect such as :

a) Construction materials, Furnishing & Equipment
b) Building envelope
c) Ventilation system
d) Maintenance
e) Occupants
f) Electric & magnetic fields
a)Construction Materials, Furnishings, And Equipment:

 These items may emit odor, particles, and volatile organic

compounds (VOCs), and adsorb and desorb VOCs.

 These organisms can affect occupants adversely if fungal

spores containing mycotoxins and allergens or the MVOCs are
inhaled. A great deal of research remains to be done to identify
individual metabolic gases, their odors, the microbes that
produce them, and the human response to molds and fungi.

b) Building Envelope:

 The envelope controls the infiltration of outside air and

moisture, and may include operable or inoperable windows.
c) Ventilation Systems:

 Acoustical materials in heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning

(HVAC) systems may contribute to indoor air pollution in the
same way as construction materials, mentioned above.

 Ventilation systems also control the distribution, quantity,

temperature, and humidity of air.

d) Maintenance:

 Lack of maintenance allows dirt, dust, mold, odors, and particles

to increase. The use of high-VOC cleaning agents pollutes air.
e) Occupants:

 The number of occupants and the amount of equipment

contribute to indoor air pollution. People and pets are major
sources of microorganisms and airborne allergens in indoor
environments.Occupant activities also can pollute the air.

f) Electric And Magnetic Fields (EMF):

 The possible health effects of electric and magnetic fields

generated by power lines and electric appliances are not well
understood at this time. There is considerable debate regarding
possible health effects of these sources. More research is
required.
GBI
3) Sustainable Site Planning &
Management (SM)
 Selecting appropriate sites :
Planned access to public transportation, community
services, connectivity, improving infrastructure.
Open spaces and landscaping.

 Avoiding and conserving environmentally sensitive areas

through the redevelopment of existing sites and brownfields.

 Implementing proper construction management, storm water

management and reducing the strain on existing infrastructure
capacity.
GBI
4) Materials & Resources (MR)
 Promote the use of environment-friendly materials sourced
from sustainable sources and recycling.

 Implement proper construction waste management with

storage, collection and re-use of recyclables and
construction formwork and waste.

5) Water Efficiency (WE)

 Rainwater harvesting, water recycling and water-saving
fittings

6) Innovation (IN)
 Innovative design and initiatives that meet the objectives of
the GBI.
Ok… that’s all !!!
