Project Introduction

a. Preface

The government of Malaysia intends to carry out the project for "Menaiktaraf
Lebuhraya Pasir Gudang (FT17) Daripada Empat (4) Lorong Kepada Enam (6)
Lorong, Johor Phase 2B: Dari PersimpanganBandar Seri Alam/ Taman Rinting
Ke Pasir Gudang". the road upgrading project is to upgrade Pasir Gudang highway
(FT17) is a four (4) lane dual carriageway route with U5 standard that connects the
second link highway (second link) to the interchange of Jalan Pasir Gudang. This
road which connects Johor Bahru city centre is the main route for heavy vehicles to
the industrial area and Pasir Gudang port. The existing Level of Service (LOS) is F
and need to be upgraded. This project involves the phase 2B project which will be
upgraded starting from the interchange of Bandar Seri Alam/ Taman Rinting and
ending at the interchange of Pasir Gudang highway with a road length of
approximately 5.0km.

1.0 OBJECTIVE

This method statement is to outline installation works for pre-cast roadside drainage
and culvertbeing carried out.

2.0 SCOPE OF WORK

This method statement will cover the drainage works (Cast In-Situ Box Culverts). This
method statement introduces the proposed activities to be undertaken and acts as a
general methodology for the completion of culvert and drainage works. This has been
prepared to identify the work stages and the construction methodology for ensuring the
works are carried out in compliance with contract requirements.

4.0 WORKS METHODOLOGY

PRE-CAST U DRAIN

Preparatory Works

• Once the location for specific type of roadside drain is identified and finalized,
a survey team will be mobilizing to the location to peg out the proposed drain
alignment, set out control station and determine the flow level and gradient.
• The clashes with other underground services to be checked, prior to actual
construction.
• Excavation to drain level and proper alignment shall be guided by offset peg
situated every ten meters interval or shorter distance as so required along the
proposed drain alignment.
• A string pulled along designated offset peg with pre-determined reduce level
shall be used as guide to control from over excavation. A mock up drain sample
fabricated from wood plank shall be used as guide to control trench shape and
size.
• Excavation shall be mechanically carried out with plant fitted with suitable
trenching bucket to suit the required drain shape and size.

Construction Method
• The excavation shall be carried out down to about 50mm above the proposed
foundation level. The excavated earth will be temporarily stockpiled along the
trench for reuse in future backfilling. If there are any surplus earth, it will be
disposed to the approved stockpile area.
• The trench bottom shall be trimmed manually to the foundation level toreceive
the sand bedding.
• The width and depth of trench to be excavated shall be in accordance to the
construction drawing requirements.

• If any unsuitable material is encountered on trench pit, it shall be removed and

replaced with approved suitable material. The Consultant/Engineers shall be

directing the depth of unsuitable material to be removed.

RINTING KE PASIR GUDANG

• Precast drainage shall be laid on the completed sand bedding. However, if

there is soft ground encountered, it shall be removed and replaced with suitable
fill material before placing the sand bedding. The Consultant/Engineers shall
confirm the depth of unsuitable to be removed.
• The granular bedding material to be approved prior to drain construction.
• Survey peg shall be set out in the excavated trench. The sting line on both sides
of the culvert alignment shall also be prior to placing of sand bedding. The peg
will be used for reference of both alignment and inverts level.
• The sand bedding material shall be laid on the prepared trench's bed of
foundation slightly higher than the required level. The extra fill is to allow for
minor settling of the culvert into the bedding and at the same time into the
bedding andat the same time to allow for some minor displacement of the
bedding material due to the weight of culvert.
• The drainage shall then be gently lowered into the trench by means of either
hydraulics excavator.
• The drainage will be lifted via circular tube inserted through the walls of the
drainage. Steps are taken to ensure that the sling does not compress
theroadside drain walls.
• The first drainage unit shall be laid and secured at its correct position and invert
level/fall.
• Checking on the position and level of the laid drainage shall be conducted by
using the established string lines and level pegs. If the drainage position/level
is not in order, then it shall immediately be rectified before proceeding further
with the other units.
• Subsequent culvert units shall be laid through the establish line and level. 1:3
Cement mortar shall be used to fill up the jointing.

• After the precast drainage has been laid, the alignment and level of the
drainage shall be checked and approved by the Consultant/Engineers prior to
proceed with back-filling works.

PRE-CAST PIPE CULVERT

A mock up drain sample
fabricated from wood plank shall be used as guide to control trench shape and
size.

Excavation of Trenches
• Excavation of trenches shall be straight lines and gradients required as
specified.
• The trench shall be of minimum width to allow adequate working space for the
proper construction of joints and compaction of back filling around the pipe unit.
• Excavation works shall be carried out in accordance with the alignments and
the required invert levels as shown on the construction drawings.
• Before any excavations commence and throughout the period of construction
each pipe culvert sump center and invert level shall be set out and marked by
a center peg.
• Excavation works shall be done using excavators and the excavated waste
materials to be stockpiled within side by using dump trucks at designated area.

Laying Sand Bedding Material

• The base of pipe culvert to be compacted using plate compactor and

300mm thicksand bedding material shall be laid and compacted before the
unit of pipe culvert is placed in position.

RINTING KE PASIR GUDANG

Precast Pipe Culvert Jointing

• Precast units are laid with joints that are to be of the spigot and socket type with
rubber ringsas specified and voids (if any) shall be filled with 1:3 cement mortar or
cement grout.

• No immediate loading or backfilling will be permitted around the precast units

until approvalis obtained.

Fill and Compact Haunching Material

• This step of the process should be undertaken once the laying process is
completed, and the edgings have been checked for alignment both along the
face and over the top surface. Make any adjustments to the alignment before
placing the haunching.

• While the sand bedding holds the edging firmly at the correct level, the haunching
material holds the edging in the lateral (side-to-side) place.

• Place haunching material 0.5 diameter thick from top of sand bedding material to
centerline of pipe culvert.

• Haunching area evenly along both sides of pipe culvert and fittings, so that equal
load is maintained along both sides of pipe culvert and fittings.

• Haunching work under pipe culvert and fittings so that there are no voids in fill an
so that pipe culvert and fittings are properly supported.

• Compact haunching area so that pipe culvert is properly supported to achieve

density specified for backfill material.

Backfilling and Compaction

Backfilling material shall be taken from the original suitable material and approved
compactor will be use to compact filling material.
