CLASSROOM ACTION RESEARCH IN SPEAKING ENGLISH LEARNING

Introduction
Research in English learning is a scientific activity that aims at
investigating the rules that work in the process of English learning.
Understanding a process of English teaching means being able to explain the
system, rules, patterns, or formula, in the process of English teaching (Marshall
& Rossman, 1995:16)Researchers believe that an effective process of English
teaching is based on a certain system, rules, patterns, formula, or regularity. It is
this system that is going to be discovered by researchers in English teaching.
One of the types of the research in English learning is classroom action
research. This research aims to improve the quality of English teaching in the
classroom. So, English teachers and the students of English departments as
prospective English teachers should understand well about this type of research.
The reality shows that some of English teachers and the students in
English department do not understand well how to conduct classroom action
research. The main question is “what should be done in every step of classroom
action research.

Method of the Research

The method of this research is action research. Defined by Northeast
Conference in George University (1998), action research is classroom-based research
conducted by teachers in order to reflect upon and evolve their teaching. It is
systematic, documented inquiry into one aspec of teaching and learning in a specific
classroom.
The method used in this research is action research. Wallace (1998) in Burns
(1999:30) states that action research is a process that is done by systematically
collecting data on someone‟s everyday practice and analyzing it in order to come to
some decisions about what the future practice should be. Wallace‟s opinion is
supported by Carr and Kemmis (1986) in Burns (1999: 30). They state that Action
Research is a self-reflection done by participants to judge their own practices in order
to improve it. Here, the participants are not only judge their practices, but also
understanding it and the situation in which their practices are carried out.
The model of action research is the framework in undertaking a classroom
action research. It can be concluded that the steps of the research including planning,
action, observation, and reflection are included in the part of procedures of this
research. In conducting this classroom action research, there is collaboration between
the writer and the English teacher. The procedures of action research in this research
can be seen as follows:
a. Identifying the problem
The writer as the observer in this research identifies the problem. The
problem refers to the students‟ speaking ability that is still low.
b. Carrying out the real classroom research

1) Planning
The activities in the planning are:
a) Preparing materials, making lesson – plan, and designing the steps in
doing action the action
b) Preparing list of students‟ name and scoring
c) Preparing teaching – aids (e.g. the chips which is used in activity)
d) Preparing sheets for classroom observation (to know the situation of
teaching-learning process when the method or technique is applied)
e) Preparing a test (to know whether students‟ participation improves or
not).
2) Acting
The researcher made an agreement to the teacher on:
a) Teaching English by using the Role Play Technique.
b) Giving occasion to the students to ask any difficulties or problems.
c) Asking students to use Role Play Technique again in their group
during the discussion.
d) Asking some of students to present the result of the discussion with
their group in front of the class.
e) Giving test1.
f) Teaching speaking skill by using Role Play Technique.
g) Giving occasion to the students to ask any difficulties or problems.
h) Asking students to use Role Play Technique again in their group
during the discussion.
i) Asking some of students to present the result of the discussion with
their group in front of the class.
j) Giving test.
3) Observing
Observation is one of the instruments used in collecting the data.
The observer observes all activities in teaching and learning process
while the teacher is teaching. The result of the observation was recorded on
her observation sheets as the useful data.

4) Reflection
observer makes an evaluation based on the observation to find the
weaknesses of the activities that have been carried out in using Role Play
Technique to see whether the students‟ speaking skill improves or not.
