Title Human rights and legal dimensions of self care interventions for sexual and
reproductive health

sexual and reproductive health. BMJ, l1941. doi:10.1136/bmj.l1941

Summary

The availability of interventions for sexual and reproductive

health—which were previously limited to medical facilities—is expanding
due to evolving technologies. Diverse self-care interventions are available
for sexual and reproductive health, such as self-injection of
contraceptives, self-screening or testing for pregnancy and sexually
transmitted infections (STIs), self-medication (for HIV and abortion, for
example) and self-monitoring (for fertility, for example). Self-care
interventions are already in use in many countries and are growing quickly
with little oversight or regulation.

While they can lessen the barriers to entry for populations that are
difficult to reach, burden on already overburdened health services, as well
as the possibility of abuse and user harm, need to be taken into account.
A human rights and legal analysis can draw attention to possible issues
and provide information that helps shape the supportive environment
needed to ensure that everyone has equitable access to high-quality self-
care interventions, particularly for those who are vulnerable.

People who use self-care interventions gain from having some sort
of link with the health system in order to facilitate appropriate support, such
as choosing whether or not to use the intervention, making sure they know
how to use it, and having access to medical professionals for follow-up
when needed. This necessitates providing appropriate information to both
healthcare providers and users of self-care interventions in addition to
guaranteeing the services' accessibility, acceptability, availability, and
quality.

Reflection
Understanding sexuality and its relationship to human reproduction
is essential for nursing students in order to provide holistic patient care. It
explores the emotional, psychological, and social facets of a person's
existence in addition to biological processes. The physiological aspects of
conception, pregnancy, and childbirth is essential when discussing
reproduction. Nursing students can effectively support individuals and
couples navigating their reproductive journeys with this knowledge. It also
makes it possible to identify any difficulties or issues that might develop
throughout the reproductive process.

Furthermore, it is crucial for nursing students to improve their

communication skills in order to address delicate subjects like sexuality
and reproduction. Patients are more likely to voice their concerns, ask
questions, and take an active role in their care when they are in an
environment that is open and judgment-free. This supports a patient-
centered approach that upholds people's autonomy and dignity when it
comes to decisions pertaining to their sexual and reproductive health.

In summary, understanding the complexity of sexuality and how it

relates to human reproduction as a nursing student is crucial to providing
comprehensive, patient-centered care. Developing a strong grasp of the
physiological and psychological dimensions of sexuality, accepting
diversity, and encouraging candid communication are all necessary for
becoming a caring and competent healthcare practitioner.
