Transistors

A transistor is a semiconductor device that can be used as an amplifier, a

switch, or in other electronic circuits. It is a fundamental building block of
modern electronic devices and is widely used in various applications.

The two main categories are based on their structure:

1.Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs) and
2.Field-Effect Transistors (FETs).

3
Field-Effect Transistors (FETs):

● Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor FET (MOSFET):

A Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor (MOSFET) is a type of

transistor widely used in electronic devices and integrated circuits for
switching and amplifying signals.
● Junction Field-Effect Transistor (JFET):

JFETs have a channel made of a semiconductor material, and the flow of

current is controlled by a voltage applied to a PN junction. Like MOSFETs,
there are N-Channel and P-Channel JFETs

4
● Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor FET (MOSFET):

A MOSFET has three main terminals: Source (S), Drain (D), and Gate (G).
It consists of a semiconductor material (often silicon), an insulating layer
of oxide (usually silicon dioxide), and a metal gate.

● Gate: The terminal that controls the flow of current between the source
and drain.

● Source: The terminal from which current enters the channel.

● Drain: The terminal through which current leaves the channel.

Operation

● The flow of current between the source and drain terminals is

controlled by the voltage applied to the gate terminal.
● When a voltage is applied to the gate, it creates an electric field
that controls the flow of charge carriers (electrons or holes) between
the source and drain regions.

7
● Types of MOSFETs:

● N-Channel MOSFET: In this type, electrons are the majority charge

carriers. A positive voltage applied to the gate allows electrons to
flow from the source to the drain.
● P-Channel MOSFET: Holes are the majority charge carriers. A
negative voltage applied to the gate allows holes to flow from the
source to the drain.
