Step 2: As a group, separate the assignment into 2-3 parts so you don’t have to complete
everything on your own! Read through your assigned section and answer the questions. Once
your group mates are finished, take turns presenting your section so you can complete the
entire assignment. Your main goal is to explain to your fellow students what would be the most
helpful to them. Not what you think I might want to read later.
Step 3: WRAPUP Each group will have 1 minute to present the most valuable thing they learned
and how they plan to implement this over the next week. When you are listening, take notes
and fill in any missing pieces on your assignment. Submit your completed assignment to Day 5
assignment in Canvas. If you miss class, you can complete the sections on your own and turn
into Canvas or on Day 6.
These are easy to fix because you can simply move to a better location.
e. What are internal distractions? How do you manage them?
Internal distractions are more complex than external ones because they can
take so many different forms and sometimes happen unpredictably. Internal
distractions include physical distractions, internal anxieties, boredom,
daydreaming, and perfectionism.
Monitoring yourself and when you find your motivation from studying is
slipping, ask yourself what is getting in the way of your ability to focus.
f. Take a pole of your group. What are some distractions that you are affected by?
How do you manage them?
Some distractions that we are affected by are notifications on our phones and
computers, any noises, and YouTube/music. We manage them by shutting our
phones off or shutting of the notifications, move to a quieter place, turn off the
music.
g. What recommendations would you provide to the class to manage distractions.
Recommendations we would like to provide is that having your phone stay in
your backpack during your classes, so you don’t get easily distracted by them
especially the notifications that pop up on them. Sit away from wherever the
noises are coming from. If someone has their music too high in the point you
can hear it, politely ask or move away from it.
Ideas for improving concentration are keeping a jot list/to-do list, set a purpose,
take an active role, study in the same place, and approximately at the same
time, have a set start and end time, be here now as if your mind wandered, and
disconnect.
b. Take a pole of your group. What are some methods that you each use to
improve concentration?
Sitting in a straight back chair to focus better. Also, listening to music because it
gets some people motivated/concentrated to do class work.
M - Monitor
Studying
Reflection in making sense of what you are trying to learn rather than just
skimming over it.
Rather than just having what you are studying to memory it helps you understand the
material better.
By putting material in your own words as a way of making sense of what you are
reading or hearing
Repeating or writing materials down several times to get the information into
your memory.
c. There are 7 ideas presented in the text. Discuss the pros of each one.
Say It again, Man - repeating the material helps fix it to long term memory
Get it into writing – It gives a more permanent record from which to study

Assignment 5 pts DUE: Turn in to Canvas or End of Class/next
class
Concept Cards – Used to learn vocabulary terms
Charts – Used when you know you will have to compare and contrast
information
d. Select 2 that your group really likes and recommends trying. List these 2
methods below. Make sure to include how someone would implement this idea
and why you recommend it.
Get it into writing – Write down information you study writing down to
information not only helps retain the information better but also gives a
permanent record of the study
Concept maps – Draw a diagram, this helps to relate concepts together which
lead toa better understanding of the material
b. Why is it important?
c. Two ideas are presented in the text. Discuss the benefits of each one.
Study groups - The people in the study group can assist each other
Study groups
e. For each strategy plan to present how to implement and why it might be worth
trying.
Talk through cards – use an index card to write a few important pieces of
information, keeps information in long term memory
Study groups – Include classmates of at most 5, members can discuss their ideas
which makes It a lot easier to remember.

It’s important so that you don’t sacrifice hours of work that end up not being
helpful
Being able to work around obstacles and use different approaches to your
advantage
d. What was one thing your group find the most helpful in this section?
The emphasis put on flexibility was something we found the most helpful
b. Take a pole of your group. What idea did you like the best?
Emma finds reading the material before class helpful to better internalize the
material. Maggie recommends flashcards to better understand terms and
concepts. Ayo prefers doing practice problems for better exposure to problem-
solving methods especially in math classes.
d. What method of studying in the sciences does your group recommend to the
class? Why?
If you go into a math class automatically thinking you’re going to fail, you won’t
put effort into it and you most likely will fail. With a positive mindset, you are
more equipped to take on the challenges of math.
Problem-solving skills
c. Review the 10 ideas listed. Then pole your group. Let each person share one
strategy that they have used for math and why it helps.
Ayo has done practice problems in order to better solidify formulas and
concepts for her. Maggie takes thorough notes which gives her the best chance
of understanding the information given in lectures. Emma asks questions when
she needs help which helps her better understand the concepts she’s struggling
with.
d. Pick 4 of the 10 methods to present to the class. Make sure to include the HOW
and the Why you are recommending this method.
1. Read textbook & annotate in margins: reading textbook material and
annotating can help you put the information into your own words and
internalize it
2. Ask questions: getting help when you need it is crucial so that you can work
on concepts that you don’t understand and hopefully understand them
3. Review daily: regularly reviewing material and problems helps to keep the
information fresh in your mind so that you don’t quickly forget it
4. Use flash cards: using flash cards for formulas and concepts can help you
remember and apply them when necessary
