Introduction:
In this module, you will learn the different types of disaster that are classified to the
hazards that caused them to happen. You will know that the effects of disaster may vary
and/or mostly depending on the severity of the exposure of life, property, and the
environment to the hazard

I. Essential Ideas
TYPES OF DISASTERS

1. Natural Disasters are devastating outcomes that result from natural hazards.
Ex. Collapse of houses from landslide and incinerated grasslands from volcanic
eruptions.
2. Man- made disasters- also called technological disasters, are destructive from
man- made hazards
8
Ex. bomb explosions, chemical spills, and even war.

Effects of Disasters- (refer to the book for the definition)

1. Primary effects- are direct situations arising from the disaster.
ex. Typhoon can cause flooding

2. Secondary effects- are situations resulting from the primary effects.

ex. flooding may lead to disruption of electrical & water services
3. Tertiary effects- are those that are not experienced as a disaster is taking place
but can be felt some time after the disaster has occurred
ex. flooding may lead to changes of channels of rivers

Affected Components
A. People –after a disaster takes place, the number of casualties is assessed.
- missing persons
- injured people
- people who got sick due to disaster
- people who have been evacuated or relocated
- loss of family members
The loss of family member, friends and other love ones is the most tragic
effects of disaster to people. The pain is exacerbated when love ones remain
missing even years after disaster.
B. Buildings and Infrastructures /Physical
- homes
- buildings
- workplaces
- commercial sites
- schools
- hospitals
- churches
- roads/bridges
With the damage of home and other infrastructures, the people of the
affected community do not just lack shelter from the elements; they have
lost most of their properties, if not all, and have to practically rebuild their
lives as they slowly replace what they have lost.

C. Economy-When a disaster strikes, its effects on the economy of the affected

are
definitely felt.
- Business
- Transportation
- Communication

9
- Electrical Power
- Fuel
- Sewerage
- Livelihood
- Household
- Companies
- School
- Transport Services

The damage of public infrastructure disrupts the operations of transport

services and this in turn affects the movement of people, goods, and services.
All these have serious implications on the economic life of a community.

D. Psychological – includes state of mental capacity and health. Perception of self-

capability to respond to disasters, fear, etc.
E. Political- includes government structure, diplomatic issues, etc.
D. Environment- Disasters can cause negative effects on the air, soil, water, and
Ecosystem
E. Biological- includes flora and fauna in environment. In the aftermath of
disaster,
humans and animals that have been injured become susceptible to
infections or communicable disease.

II. Learning Experiences

A. Clarifying Understanding
Activity: Disaster Effects Diagram
Directions: Choose one disaster and possible effects. Classify them according to
their types.

B. Processing Question:

1. How do disasters affect people? environment?

III. Lifelong Learning

Disaster can be natural and man-made. These disasters cause human,

economic, and environmental impacts that greatly affect a community. How can you
