IV. LESSON PROPER

Basketball is a team sport played between two teams of five players on a rectangular court. The
objective is to shoot a ball through the defender's hoop (a basket 18 inches (46 cm) in diameter
mounted 10 feet (3.048 m) high to a backboard at each end of the court), while preventing the
opposing team from shooting through their own hoop. A field goal is worth two points, unless
made from behind the three-point line, when it is worth three.

Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor at
the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. Naismith was looking
for a new indoor sport that his students could play during the winter months. He was inspired by
other sports such as soccer, lacrosse, and rugby, and he wanted to create a game that was both
fun and challenging.

Naismith's original rules were quite different from the game of basketball that we know today.
There were no backboards, and the ball could be thrown in any direction. Players were also
allowed to run with the ball, and there was no dribbling. The game of basketball quickly spread
throughout the United States and the world. The first professional basketball league, the National
Basketball League (NBL), was founded in 1937. The National Basketball Association (NBA)
was founded in 1946, and is now the most popular professional basketball league in the world.

Basketball Rules

The basic rules of basketball are relatively simple. Players can move the ball around the court by
passing, dribbling, or running with it. The goal is to shoot the ball through the opponent's hoop
while preventing them from doing the same.
There are a number of different fouls that can be committed in basketball, such as pushing,
tripping, and holding. If a player commits a foul, the opposing team is awarded either free throws
or the ball.

A basketball game is divided into four quarters, each of which is 12 minutes long. The team with
the most points at the end of the game wins.

Basketball Positions

There are five different positions in basketball:

Point guard: The point guard is responsible for bringing the ball up the court and running the
offense. They are typically the best ball-handlers on the team.

Shooting guard: The shooting guard is responsible for scoring points, both from inside and
outside the arc. They are typically the best shooters on the team.

Small forward: The small forward is a versatile player who can both score and rebound. They are
often the best athletes on the team.

Power forward: The power forward is a strong player who is responsible for rebounding and
scoring inside the paint. They are often the best defenders on the team.

Center: The center is the tallest player on the team, and is responsible for rebounding, scoring
inside the paint, and blocking shots.
