CHAPTER I
The Problem and Its Background

I. Rationale

In this modern world, where most of the young people are exposed to

technology educators play a vital role in preparing the new generation especially

the students capable of dealing with technology and modern times skills.

However, there are also challenges encountered by the students in dealing with

such operating systems.

Computer Systems Servicing NCII is one of the K-12 Basic Education

specialization in Senior High School under Technology, Livelihood and Vocational

Strand. This specialization focuses on technical skills where students must learn

computer set building, computer troubleshooting, software installation, system

configuration, and computer maintenance (Hsu & Hwang, 2014). Then, after

completing the course, learners are to be assessed and passed all the learning

competencies to acquire a National Certificate Level II.

In the study of Santos (2018), he mentioned that one of the challenges

experienced by the students is assembling and building a computer. This is due

to lack of practice and insufficient assistance and materials. The lack of qualified

teachers to teach the course is also mentioned in the study of Roger (2013).

In addition, the challenges have centered largely on reluctance on the part

of administrators and teachers, lack of preparation and lack of support on finding

(Nagel et. al., 2019).

In the Philippine context, the major problems encountered by the students

in learning the course is the lack of computer and programming hardware and

software, poor teaching strategy of the teachers, and the availability of internet

connection in school.

A local study conducted in Northern Samar entitled “Challenges

Experienced by Grade 12 Students” showed that students have a difficulty in

server configuration, limited access of internet, difficulty in troubleshooting, and

the teaching strategies of the teachers.

Due to the relevant issues regarding the challenges experienced by

Computer Systems Servicing NCII students, the researchers prompted to

conduct a study to determine the challenges experienced by the Computer

Systems Servicing NCII Students in Hope of Manitoba Essential Academy, Inc.

and to determine the relationship between these challenges and its relationship

to their academic performance.

The researchers assume that at the end of this study the challenges

experienced by the respondents has no effect on their academic performance.

VIII. Review of Related Literature

Computer Systems Servicing Specialization

Computer System Servicing is basically important to the students in this

modern generation. Villanueva (June 2015) defined computer systems servicing

as it covers basic and common competencies such as installing, maintaining,

configuring, and diagnosing computer systems and network. It is a blanket term

applied to the act of supporting and maintaining the computer hardware.

The specialization Computer System Servicing is under the Information

and Communications Technology (ICT) strand. This specialization offers NC II or

National Certificate 2 where they can use here and abroad if they want to skip

college education and join a workforce.

Actual activities are included in CSS where you will configure a computer,

set up networking, etc. All these activities always need troubleshooting. Many

students of CSS face troubles when performing the whole sequence of the NCII

assessment and they don’t know how to fix or troubleshoot the problem.

Challenges in Effectively Learning Computer Systems Servicing

Specialization

According to Roman et. al (2019) some of the challenges experienced by

the students are lack of computer equipment, availability of internet connection,

lack of ICT infrastructure, poor teaching methodologies, and low troubleshooting

skill. Consequently, a study conducted by Santos et. al. shows that low

configuration skill results in failing the assessment.

In the study conducted by Shawan & Villegas (2016) there are four

identified challenges in learning computer systems servicing, namely: server

configuration, troubleshooting, skills adjustment, and assessment challenges.

They also found out that peer and interpersonal factors affects the students’ skills

and learning the course.

In addition to these challenges, Briole (2016) argues that the lack of varied

teaching strategies, and lack of competent teacher to teach the course could also

be considered as a challenge. In the study entitled "Perceived Challenges by the

Grade 9 and Grade 10 students in Learning Computer Systems Servicing in

Tagbiliran National High School,” shows that the teaching styles used by the

teacher in teaching the course is ineffective and that is due to misalignment of

teacher’s expertise to the subject matter. Thus, resulting the students to have a

low passing rate in assessment.

Moreover, the ability of the students to study the components of a

Computer Processing Unit (CPU) which acts as the brain of the computer seems

to be one of the challenges experienced by the students (Reijinro et. al., 2019).

He concluded in his study that studying the components is hard as it requires a

hands-on experience.

Typical problems encountered with computer systems include slow

computer response time, performance of maintenance personnel, turnover in

user personnel, legal liabilities and restrictions, reliability of hardware and

software, downtime, security, and changing configuration of equipment.

Effects of the Identified Challenges to the Computer Systems Servicing

NCII Students

In the same study entitled "Perceived Challenges by the Grade 9 and

Grade 10 students in Learning Computer Systems Servicing in Tagbiliran

National High School,” the challenges faced by the students taking Computer

Systems Servicing subjects shows that these challenges have significantly

resulted to low academic performance of the students. Students low academic

performance resulted in feeling of stress and anxiety (De Guzman & Padilla,

2021).

The transition from online and blended learning to face-to-face class

shows that Grade 11 students who took the subject online shows that they have

performed poorly in Grade 12 when the transition to face-to-face begun. It is

identified in the study of Quin (2021) where the results show that technology

dependency has become one of the factors for poor academic performance.

Methodology

Research Methodology

Quantitative research will be used in this study. Quantitative methodology refers

to a set of strategies, techniques and assumptions used to study psychological,

social and economic processes through the exploration of numeric patterns.

Quantitative research gathers a range of numeric data Coghlan D. & Brydon-

Miller (2014). Thus, quantitative research relies on data that are observed or

measured to examine questions about the sample population (Allen, 2017).

Research Design

The design of this study is descriptive-correlational design. Descriptive research

design will be used to describe the challenges experienced by the Computer

Systems Servicing NC II students in Hope of Manitoba Essential Academy, Inc.

While correlational research design will be used to find the relationship between

the identified challenges and its effect to their academic performance.

Sampling Procedure

The sampling procedure that will be used in the study is purposive sampling

procedure. According to Achebe (2013) Purposive sampling is a technique in

which the person conducting the research relies on their judgment to choose the

9

members who will be part of the study. It is a type of nonprobability sample, and

it’s also referred to as a judgmental or expert sample. Similarly, purposive

sampling is a random sampling methodology where the sample group is targeted

to have specific attributes. This method can be used in many populations, but it is

more effective with a smaller sample size and a more homogenous population.

Research Participants

The participants of this study are the students who are currently taking Computer

Systems Servicing NCII Specialization in Hope of Manitoba Essential Academy,

Inc. There are five (5) Grade 11 ICT students and 13 Grade 12 Students.

However, since the researchers are also Grade 12 students, they will be

excluded from the 13 Grade 12 Students. Therefore, the total number of this

study is 11 respondents, five (5) Grade 11 and six (6) Grade 12 students.

Data Gathering Instrument

The survey questionnaire will be utilized in gathering the needed data. The

survey questionnaire is adopted from the study of R. F. Acebo (2019). The survey

questionnaire is modified to fit in the current study. The survey questionnaire is

comprised with two (2) parts: Part I is to determine the profile of the respondents

in terms of their 1st Quarter Grade in Computer Systems Servicing NCII Subject;

The second part is a Likert-scale composed of 10 structured questions to

determine the challenges experienced by the students.
