Chapter One Vocabulary

Matter- refers to anything that occupies space and has mass

Physical Property- is a characteristic of matter that is not associated with a change in its
chemical composition.

Phase of matter- The states in which matter can exist: as a solid, liquid, or gas.

State of matter- three distinct physical forms which matter can take in most environments:
solid, liquid , and gas

Chemical Property- is a characteristic of a particular substance that can be observed in a

chemical reaction

Physical Change- nature of the substance, the particles of which it is composed and the
numbers of particles remain unchanged.

Chemical Change- a change of materials into another, new materials with different
properties and one or more than one new substances are formed.

Element-a pure substance that cannot be broken down by any physical or chemical means
into simpler substances

Compound- is 2 or more elements combined together

Mixture- is 2 or more pure substances combined

Homogeneous mixture- uniform throughout

Heterogeneous mixture- 2 or more distinct phases

Solution- a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances in relative amounts that can be
varied continuously up to what is called the limit of solubility

Metal- any of a class of substances characterized by high electrical and thermal conductivity
as well as by malleability, ductility, and high reflectivity of light.

Nonmetal-are elements on the right of the periodic table. Non-metals can be gasses, liquids
or solids. Non-metals are dull in color, not shiny like metals.

Metalloid- an imprecise term used to describe a chemical element that forms a simple
substance having properties intermediate between those of a typical metal and a typical
nonmetal.

Semimetal- an element (such as arsenic) possessing metallic properties in an inferior degree

and not malleable

Hypothesis- A tentative explanation of the data

Theory- An explanation on with lots of evidence to support it

Law- A description of a phenomenon to which there are no known exceptions

Qualitative- Is a yes or no

Quantitative- Is an amount of something
