Classification of Matter

MATTER
is everything around
you. Atoms and
molecules are all
composed of matter.
Matter is anything that
has mass and takes up
space.

CLASSIFICATION
OF
MATTER
PURE SUBSTANCE
A pure substance is a sample of matter with both
definite and constant composition with
distinct chemical properties.
EXAMPLES:
KINDS OF PURE SUBSTANCE
ELEMENT
-Elements are substances that cannot be
separated into simpler substances.
EXAMPLES:
COMPOUND
-A compound is a substance formed when two or more
elements are chemically joined.
EXAMPLES:
TYPES OF ELEMENT
METALS
-They are usually shiny, very dense, and only melt
at high temperatures.
EXAMPLES:
NON-METAL
-Their surface is dull and they don’t conduct
heat and electricity.
EXAMPLES:
METALLOIDS
- Elements that have properties of both metals and
nonmetals
EXAMPLES:
MIXTURES
- is a material system made up of two or
more different substances which are mixed
but are not combined chemically.
EXAMPLES:
TYPES OF MIXTURE
HOMOGENOUS SUBSTANCE
-a sample of matter has the same
composition throughout
EXAMPLES:
KINDS OF HOMOGENOUS MIXTURE
ALLOY
-an alloy is a homogeneous mixture of two
elements.
EXAMPLES:
SOLUTION
-is a homogeneous mixture involving a solute and
a solvent. The solute is
the substance that gets dissolved and the solvent
is the liquid in which the solute dissolves.
EXAMPLES:
HETEROGENOUS MIXTURE
- is a mixture that composes of components that aren't
uniform or they have localized regions that all have
different properties.
EXAMPLES:
TYPES OF HETEROGENOUS MIXTURE
SUSPENSION
-Suspensions are homogeneous mixtures with particles that
have diameters greater than 1000 nm, 0.000001 meter.
EXAMPLES:
SOLUTION
-are mixtures with particle sizes at the molecule
or ion level.
EXAMPLES:
COLLOID
- Colloids are mixtures with particle sizes that consist of
clumps of molecules.

Facts
About
Matter!
• Fact 1 - Definition: Matter is
everything that takes up space and has
weight. Matter has volume and mass
• Fact 2 - Matter is made up of tiny
building blocks that are called Atoms.
Atoms are Atoms are at least a
hundred times smaller than the width
of a human hair! The purest type of
atom is called an element
• Fact 3 - Elements can be classified
based on physical states, often
referred to as the states of matter
• Fact 4 - At room temperature and
pressure the states of matter as
follows:
•Solids
•Gases
•Liquids
•Plasma
Fact 5 - Liquids, solids and gases
are the most common 3 states of
matter on Earth, however, much
of the matter of universe is in
the form of hot plasma
