I had the opportunity to be a part of a service project organized by members of the radiation
oncology department at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. On April 22, 2023, a group of us, including family and
friends, volunteered our time to the Christian nonprofit organization Feed My Starving Children (FMSC)
located in Mesa, Arizona. This incredible organization was established in 1987 to “feed God’s starving
children hungry in body and spirit” with the goal to “reach everyone, until ALL are fed.” 1 They have
taken on the arduous task of working with many other organizations and ministries across the globe to
end world hunger. In this mission, they have worked with food science and nutrition professionals to
create what they call: MannaPacks. These food packs are 380-400 grams of powdered vitamins, dried
vegetables, soy, and rice that are made and packaged by volunteers like us and then distributed to
countries across the world that need this life-saving donation.
During our two-hour commitment we were split into groups and assigned to a table and given a
specific role to measure and pour ingredients, hold packaging, weigh contents, heat seal contents, and box
packages. It was very well organized, and they had specific rules to ensure a sanitary environment when
handling the food products. It was a fun atmosphere with music and competition among groups to see
who could prepare the most boxes of 36 packs in each. Our group alone was able to complete 13 boxes or
468 MannaPacks. The combined groups packaged over 157 boxes which will provide 33,912 meals to
children and families in need. Those two hours of our time could feed 92 children for a whole year! This
is definitely something that I hope to be a part of again soon.
I was taught from a young age about the importance of service. I have been involved in many
service opportunities inside and outside of the United States and have seen firsthand the need for our help
across the globe. This service opportunity was extra special because I was able to bring my oldest son
along with me. We were able to talk about how our small efforts can have large impacts on others and
how these meals will be helping kids his age become and stay healthy. I have learned that when we serve
others in this way, it’s not just physical support we give but also emotional support that can provide hope
and blessings. What I really appreciate about FMSC is that they don’t just deliver food and move on, they
commit to donating to that area over a long amount of time to ensure that the area continues to thrive.
Working with my coworkers was also a great way to build relationships outside of work and do good at
the same time. We are in a field that helps others overcome physical challenges, but I truly believe that it’s
the emotional support we can offer that is the most important and impactful. I have learned that I am in a
place both professionally and personally where I can help and uplift others.
