Base Module
Function & Purpose

The base module is the center of the monitoring

system.
The base module, the OB-module, the MTP-
module and the MEG-module are designed by
MAN Energy Solutions, Holeby specifically for
this engine type.
The Base Module function is monitoring and
surveillance of the engine.

It collects all engine data temperatures,

pressure, speed, etc.
All information are displayed on the Operating
Box and on the LED bar panels the operation
display, and sending all engine information to
Engine control room and generating alarms.

Base Module
Fuse overview

On the Base Module are placed two fuses,

named F1 and F2:

F1: This is the primary fuse for the

modules, which fuses the controller of the
module and most I/Os.

F2: This fuse protects the power supply for

the valves controlled by the BM relay
outputs and depending on the hardware
version of the PC Board also protects the
power supply for some of the sensor inputs

A green LED indicates the status of F2 (“F2-LED”).

BM error codes with 3-colored LED

On all base module units, a LED is placed on

the terminal print that lights in three different
colors:

• RED
• GREEN
• ORANGE

The LED indicates the status of the unit by

means of various flash sequences or a constant
light. The meaning of the various flash
sequences are listed on the following slides:

Operation Box Module
Display messages

Display: Description:

READY Shown for a few seconds when the OB module is powered

on, indicating that the internal self test of the module was
successfully completed.
OFFLN The OB module is OFFLINE. There is no communication
from the Base Module to the OB module. This message will
briefly appear when powering on the system, indicating that
the Base Module has been reset.
Other causes:
- Defective link between BM and OB module.
- No power on BM.
- BM fatal hardware or software error. Indicated by red or
yellow light or flashes on the BM 2-colored LED.

Operation Box Module
Display messages

Display: Description:

ERR-1 Indicates cable break or sensor failure on the corresponding

input.
Note: In case of engine RPM pickup failure or TC RPM
pickup failure the indication will flash between ERR-1 and
rpm indication. This is done in order to trouble shoot in the
event of very low rpm on the TC or occasionally a fault on
the pickups.

FAULT Indicates that the BM module has entered failsafe mode

either because of a fatal software or hardware fault.

----- Shown if the exhaust temperature is selected for an invalid

cylinder number.

Base Module
Choice of software

All modules are built around a

microprocessor and therefore
will contain software of different
degrees of complexity.

The SoftWare contains and

determines the final operating
functions of the Supervision
Modules.

Therefore the description of

both the SW and operating
functions are combined in this
section.

Public | Academy Holeby – ©2019 Oct 24, 2019 20

Base Module
Choice of software
For identification of the
software’s engine type, the first
digit of the version number is
used as the “engine ID:
L16/24: 2.xx
L27/38: 3.xx
L21/31: 4.xx
L32/40: 6.xx
V28/32SS, A-side:
71.xx
V28/32SS, B-side:
72.xx
EDS datalogger 8.xx
BM2 Splash Oil9 5.xx
Except for the fact that the first digit is locked to the engine type, the normal ASD/MBD principles
for versioning, branching and check pointing are followed.

Base Module
An important detail… Base-module.
Base-modules with Item-id. 1680910-
3 or newer, is prepared for code-
loading, via RS232 communication
port.

These are normally marked with a label

“Codeload Ver. (eg.3.8)”
Older versions of the base-module can not
be code-loaded.

Note: Remember to write down the

engine running hours from Operating
Box.
These has to be loaded via RS232
and Alpha14 software after installation.
(hours has to typed in as seconds,
Hours x 3600)

Start the engine to reach nominal speed

Set dip switch SW 5:3 to “ON” and Overspeed

will be triggered.

The engine must stop. And overspeed indication

must be on.

After engine has stopped set SW 5:3 back to

“OFF” position and reset the Overspeed
shutdown on the operation box.

Overspeed indication must be off.

Warning!
Do not raise the speed over 120% of nominal
speed because this could damage the valves
and pistons.
