SPECIFICATION FOR
CATHODIC PROTECTION OF PIPELINE
TABLE OF CONTENTS
1.0 GENERAL 3
9.0 SPARE 13
1.0 GENERAL
1.1 Introduction
The purpose of this document is to outline the minimum requirements for detailed
design of cathodic protection system for Pipeline.
1.2 Scope
1.2.1 This Document outlines the minimum requirements for detailed design,
supply, installation, testing and commissioning of cathodic protection
system for the MOGAS Pipeline external protection between BEL’s Oil
Storage Terminal and PARCO approx 936 m in length.
1.2.4 All materials and equipment provided for the Cathodic Protection
system shall be new, unused and free from defects.
1.3 Definitions
1.5 Deviations
1.7.2 Daily, weekly, monthly and run summaries of all major aspects of the
production process shall be provided as reports to COMPANY /
CONSULTANT
VENDOR shall guarantee that all material and parts included in construction shall
be new, unused and of the required / specified grade.
1.9 Documentation
Contractor/Supplier shall refer following documents attached with the tender for
design of the CP System.

ZISHAN ENGINEERS (PVT.) LTD. BE ENERGY LTD.
The general scope defined herein shall cover all aspects of the Cathodic Protection
System in compliance with listed codes & standards. All technical requirements
mentioned in this document shall be considered as minimum and Contractor shall be
responsible to furnish any other supply / services, as required to furnish a fully functional
system.
Carrying out soil resistivity survey of the BEL installation area and along the pipeline
routes.
Supply of all equipment, material, etc. and installation of the complete systems as per
approved design.
Contractor shall provide Sacrificial Anode type CP on approx 936 m long BEL
terminal to PARCO buried pipeline
5.1 CP Method
Galvanic type CP shall be applied for buried pipeline, which shall comprise
sacrificial anodes to provide DC current to the pipeline buried in soil.
Off Potential mV
Protected Structure Versus Reference Cell
Min Max
The evaluation of the current demand necessary for the CP shall be carried out
from the design input data.
Notes:
1. The current density value shall be increased by 25% per 10 °C rise in temperature
above 30 °C;
Saturated Copper / copper sulphate (Cu / CuSO4) reference electrode (CSE) shall
be suitable for the entire CP system design life of pipeline. Each CSE shall be
provided with special gelled elements and with backfill mix, i.e. bentnite, in a
cloth bag (pre-packaged) to retain moisture and minimise migration of
contaminants from the vicinity.
The anode cables shall be supplied with single core multistranded PVC/PVC
double insulated cable with a minimum cross-sectional area of 1 x 16 mm². The
cable shall be connected to the core of the anode located at the bottom of a cavity
provided for this purpose, the relevant connection being carefully sealed and
insulated with a two part, chlorine-resistant epoxy compound. A suitable sleeve or
heat-shrinkable cap shall be provided to reinforce the insulation and seal tightness
of the connection and the cable at the head of the anode.
Anode leads shall be terminated into a test point connected to the pipeline for
monitoring purposes. The test point shall be located such that anode cables are
kept as short as possible. Cables shall be connected to pipelines so as to ensure
adequate mechanical strength and electrical continuity and to avoid damage to the
pipeline. A method often used for cable to steel connection is thermit welding
(cad welding) or pin brazing, provided the size of charge is correctly chosen
(Manufacturer’s instructions), the surfaces are very clean and the atmospheric
conditions acceptable (dry), the quality of a cad weld or pin braze is good. Cables
shall be laid without coils or kinks and buried in fine-graded soil or sand at a
depth of at least 0,5 m, or in accordance with local regulations, whichever is
deeper. Buried cables should be of one continuous length without splices and
should not be laid in the vicinity of power cables.
Junction box shall comprise a terminal junction box sealed to IP65 against the
ingress of dust and moisture and be provided with required number of circuits.
Each circuit shall have shunts and grid coil resistors to monitor and control the
current.
All variable resistors and shunts shall be mounted on a non-metallic panel board,
complete with copper bus bar, bolts / nuts and connection studs suitable for
connection of specified sizes of copper cables.
Each test station shall be embodied with a terminal board with 10 No. terminals.
The anodes shall be connected to the pipeline through a suitable test station with
provisions for anode current output measurement. Anodes must not be welded
directly to the pipeline.
6.7 Backfill
The backfill used with magnesium and zinc anodes shall comply with the
following composition requirements:
20% bentonite
The weight of backfill surrounding each anode shall be at least equal to the net
weight of the anode and be contained in a cotton bag or a metal canister.
6.8.3 Foreign pipeline, road and water crossings parallel or crossing the
pipeline.
The buried sections of the pipeline shall be isolated from the above ground piping
as well as form the rest of the buried structures (including the electrical
grounding). Plant electrical grounding shall not be connected to the protected
parts of the piping.

The corrosions coupons which installed in the piping are in the same corrosive
environment and experiencing the same corrosion process with the pipe. So the
loss weight of corrosion coupons can reflect the corrosion degree of pipe. The
corrosion rate can be calculated by testing the loss weight of corrosion coupon
during a period of time.
Erosion probes operate quite identical to weight loss coupons but instead of
weight the change of electrical resistance is determined. EP are applicable in any
environment except liquid metals or some conductive molten salts and do not
need an aqueous phase. Compared with metal loss coupons the reaction time is
much quicker and can be expected to respond within hours. High resolution EP is
available with a respond time of minutes which allows already real time
monitoring.
Both the corrosion coupon system and corrosion probe system shall be used to
reflect the corrosion state of the pipe.
