Inverse tangent function
Definition 9.3
The inverse tangent function is a function denoted by ( ) or arctan( ) that assigns to each

real number x the unique number y in − , such that x = tan y.

Reflecting the graph of y = tan x in the line y = x gives the graph of ( )= ( ) shown in the
below.

Example 8 Compute

a) (0) b) √3 c) −

Solution

a) (0) = 0 because tan(0) = 0 and 0 − ,

b) √3 = because tan = √3and − ,

c) − =− because tan − =− and − − ,

√ √

Example 9 Express ( ( )) in terms of

Solution: Here, you consider the following cases
i) Suppose = 0,then ( (0)) = tan(0) = 0
ii) Suppose0 < < 1. Let = (0),then sin( ) = and − < < Look at the

reference triangle given. Hence ( ( )) = tan( ) = √

iii) Suppose−1 < < 0. Then ( ( )) = − ( (− ))

⟹ ( ( )) = − √ =√

∴ ( ( )) = √ for all (−1,1)

Inverse cotangent, secant, and cosecant functions

Example 10 Find exact values of

a) (√3) b) (2) c) −

Solution
a) = √3 ⇒ cot( ) = √3 and 0 < < ⇒ =

b) (2) = because = 2 and 0 < <

√ √
c) − = − =− =−

9.3 GRAPHS OF SOME TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS

Example 11Draw the graphs of = sin( ) , = sin( ) and = −2sin( ) on the same

coordinate system for 0 ≤ ≤ 2 .

Solution The amplitude of = sin( ) , = sin( )

and = −2sin( ) are 1, and -2 respectively and the amplitude of sin x is 1.

The negative sign = −2 reflects the graph of y = 2 sin x across the x-axis.
this gives you the graphs of all the three functions as shown in

Figure to the right.

In general, for any function f, the graph of f is drawn by expanding or compressing the graph
of f in the vertical direction and by reflecting in the x-axis when a < 0. For a ≠ ± 1, the amplitude
of f is different from that of f, whereas the period doesn’t change. Similarly, the graphs of
= x, = –3 , = ,0 ≤ ≤ 2. are as shown in

Exercise: Draw graph of

i) = x, = 3 , =− ,0 ≤ ≤ 2. on the same set of axes and determine

their respective amplitudes and behaviors

ii) = 4sin( ) , = − sin( ) and = sin( ) 0 ≤ ≤ 2. on the same set of axes and

determine their respective amplitudes and behaviors

9.3.1 The Graph of f (x) = sinkx, k > 0

From all these, you have the following sketch of the curve of f (x) = sin (2x) drawn together with y =
sin x.

9.3.2 Graphs of ( ) = ( + ) + and ( ) = ( + )+

Consider the function y = a sin (k x + b) + c⟹ − = sin + .This is simply the function

= ( ) after it has been shifted− units x- in the direction and c units in the y-direction.

In particular, it is shifted to the positive x-direction if < 0 and to the negative x-direction if >0

Also, it is shifted to the positive y-direction if c > 0 and to the negative y-direction if c < 0. For

example, if you want to draw the graph of = 3 sin 2 − − 2 rewrite the equation in the form

+ 2 = sin 2 − .Thus, the graph of this function is obtained by shifting the graph of

y = 3 sin (2x) in the positive x-direction by units and 2 units in the negative y-direction as shown

in below
