Project F.L.A.M.E.: “Fire Prevention for Learners to raise Awareness and to Mitigate the impacts
and Effects of fire hazards”

Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction (DRR) is one of the core subjects under the
Senior High School Curriculum. As a big part of understanding disasters involves projecting
future possibilities, learning about DRR first includes understanding what are disasters and
the different hazards that may then potentially lead to these disasters. Rather than keeping the
awareness to our own, we the Grade 12 Curriculum will raise an awareness campaign to the
Grade 8 Curriculum.
The goal of Project FLAME is to conduct a fire awareness campaign for learners of
the Grade 8 curriculum to help raise awareness and mitigate the impacts and effects of fire
hazards. The objective of this project is to educate participants on how to avoid fires and fire-
related injuries, to create awareness of fire deaths and injuries and their common causes and
to inform participants of their personal responsibilities towards fire safety and injury
prevention.
As we all know, the Philippines is frequently cited as among the top countries most at
risk of disasters. While disasters can arise from man-made sources, the most inevitable ones
come from natural phenomena. Even without scientific scrutiny, every Filipino is familiar
with the impacts of typhoons, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and fires on everyday life and
national development. This makes learning about disaster preparedness aligned with
everyone’s interests.
As many people say, “Prevention is better than cure”. Preventing disasters has a much
better impact on people’s lives.

Pre-Implementation of Project FLAME:

To implement this project, we the students of Grade 12 Apollo together with our
subject teacher Ms. Yola Jane Yocente planned, organized, and conceptualized the fire
awareness campaign. We were divided into six (6) groups and were assigned to the different
sections of the Grade 8 curriculum. The assigned leaders were the ones who were deployed at
BFP and Coast Guard during our immersion.
Our Group, Group 6 led by Rovic A. Yago and was assigned to the Grade 8
Grapefruit. Our group consisted of Reyjon R. Gapusan, Eunice R. Molera, Reggie Ben B.
Matias, Lorenzo D. Macagaling, and Jashmire A. Daquioag.
Our group objectives are.
 To educate younger grades to be aware of fire hazards that can occur.
 To teach proper ways to be safe when there’s a fire.
Implementation of Project FLAME:
Presenting and discussing the topics and proper precautionary measures to the Grade
8 students were a bit of a hassle. Some are shy to participate but some are active in answering
our questions. Their participation in our activities was splendid thanks to Lorenzo
Macagaling.
And let them assess their knowledge after the presentation by asking them about the
types of fire and types of fire extinguishers. It was not stress-free, but it was fun and happy.
We did a fire drill as well and we assessed their precautionary knowledge when
there’s a major fire incident inside or outside the school.

Post-implementation for Project FLAME:

Project FLAME was successful as planned, after all that work, we even gave snacks
to them and water. It was a really hot day so we gave them water especially because hot days
can also cause a fire.
We are hoping that these students will be more aware of the potential fire hazards to
ensure their safety in their homes, at school or even outside. The subject Disaster Readiness
and Risk and Reduction (DRR) and Project Fire Prevention for Learners to raise Awareness and
to Mitigate the impacts and Effects of fire hazards (FLAME) serves as a guide for them and the next
students of the Claveria School of Arts and Trades.
