Project F.L.A.M.E.: “Fire Prevention for Learners to raise Awareness and to Mitigate the
impacts and Effects of fire Hazards”

Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction (DRR) is one of the core subjects under the
Senior High School Curriculum. The subject majorly involves understanding disasters,
projecting future possibilities, as well as understanding the hazards that may then potentially
lead to disasters. Each hazard type has its own precautionary measures and ideal responses to
prevent disasters. Towards the end of this subject, learners focus on applications to the
community and the Philippine society. In line to this core subject and its expected
competencies, the Grade 12 Apollo STEM students conducted a Fire Awareness Campaign to
the Grade 8 Curriculum on May 17, 2023, at 8:00 am to raise awareness and to mitigate the
potential impacts and effects of fire hazards.

As we all know, the Philippines is frequently cited as among the top countries most at
risk to disasters. While disasters can arise from man-made sources, the most inevitable ones
come from natural phenomena. Even without scientific scrutiny, every Filipino is familiar
with the impacts of typhoons, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and fires to everyday life and
to national development. This makes learning about disaster preparedness aligned with
everyone’s interests.

Through Project F.L.A.M.E., our group and the students assigned to us gained
numerous benefits. We obtained added experience in public speaking, handling a crowd, and
balancing out conflicts with resourcefulness. Also, with the opportunity to spread awareness
about fire hazards to the Grade 8 Damson, not only did we add to their knowledge, but we
also discovered their level of awareness on the topics. In the end, as we educate students that
day, we also equipped them with the needed understanding that leads to a fire hazard safer
environment.

Pre-implementation of Project F.L.A.M.E.:

To implement the project, first, Ms. Yola Jane R. Yocente, our subject teacher for
Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction (DRR) announced to us Grade 12 Apollo students
that there is to be a fire awareness campaign. Next, she divided the class in groups wherein
the leaders are former immersion students at the Bureau of Fire Protection- Sanchez Mira
(BFP-SM). For our group, the leader is Mr. Alexis Justine C. Calizo, with members: Edheljoy
P. Diego, Angela C. Oracion, Angelo James O. Gameng, John Louise S. Galiza, and Reinier
Dwain S. Arconado. The group was assigned to Grade-8 Damson.
Once that was finished, each group planned, organized, and conceptualized their own
approach to their respective sections. We were given the following materials:
• An evaluation form.
• A brochure about fire hazards to be given and left at the assigned section.
• A PowerPoint presentation to discuss the following topics:
o Fire triangle
o Causes of Fire
o Precautionary Measures
o Phases of Fire
o Basic Proper Response to Fire
With this plan, we Grade 12 Apollo students and our subject teacher had devised a
systematic approach to campaign fire awareness to the Grade 8 Curriculum. (Time Frame:
3rd Week of May 2023)

Implementation of Project F.L.A.M.E.

Implementing the campaign was successful. Although it faced some hindrance, the
campaign proceeded. Our group started by discussing about fire hazards. After that, the fire
awareness campaign to the Grade 8-Damson students followed the different phases of the fire
drill.
For phase one, once the students learned about fire hazards, we all waited for the
signal of the fire drill. After the alarm, phase two commenced. With respect to the discussion,
the students all responded calmly to the alarm in order for them to evacuate. Then, they were
guided to assemble at the assigned meeting place in front of their room. Lastly, the fifth phase
included a headcount.
With that said, the students were all cooperative, leading to a smooth flow regarding
their participation. In turn, the campaign helped the students to gain and share knowledge
about fire hazards. Fortunately, they were all active in the activities. (Time Frame: 3rd Week
of May 2023)

Post-implementation for Project F.L.A.M.E.

In assessing/ evaluating the program, there was an evaluation form given to the
president of Grade 8- Damson, now attached with this report. While some difficulties were
encountered by our group, including:
• The television of the Grade 8- Damson classroom was not functional, and our group
was unable to find a vacant projector.
• The group leader had objections and difficulties with the process of discussions and
phases of the program: Mr. Alexis Justine C. Calizo who is assigned our group leader
as he was formerly an immersion student at the Bureau of Fire Protection- Sanchez
Mira (BFP-SM) did not know how to present his part of the discussion and was
unable to lead the fire drill.
• The scheduled school buzzer as the signal for the fire drill did not proceed as planned
because of the conflict in lecture timings of the different groups.

Nevertheless, our group was fortunately able to address the problems that arose by:
• Finding and asking for assistance from Mr. Peter Marrion S. Agarpao, another former
immersion student at the BFP-SM for the discussion phase and initially instructing the
students of what to do during the fire drill.
• For the television, our group made a makeshift stand with the boxes in the Grade- 8
Damson classroom and used a laptop as a substitute for the visual aid.
• To replace the fire alarm, our group made use of a cellphone’s flashlight, flashing it
five times as the signal for the drill.
As a result, our group successfully managed the phases of the program. We finished
the phases of the program, conducted a recitation throughout the discussion to make sure that
the students understood the topics, and executed a fire drill. In the end, the goals of Project
F.L.A.M.E. was realized. (Time Frame: 3rd Week of May 2023)
