ABSTRACT

This study examines the impact of Mobile Legends addiction among

Senior High School students in San Agustin Institute of Technology. The study’s

objective is to discover how many hours they play, explore the possible effects,

and discover the reasons or strategies used by Senior High School students in

order to understand how they minimize their Mobile Legends addiction. Using a

phenomenological method, data were collected from a sample of 13 selected

respondents who are Senior High School students. The results reveal that the

respondents play between 5 to 16 hours a day. The effects these respondents

receive from being addicted to Mobile Legends are low academic performance,

laziness, forgets to eat, radiation sickness, lack of sleep, and change of behavior.

Furthermore, the strategies these respondents used in order to minimize their

Mobile Legends addiction are phone full storage, self-control, uninstalling the

game, phone being confiscated, broken phones, seeking another entertainment,

and academic performance being prioritized. The findings of this study have

important implication for parents, and teachers, highlighting the need to monitor

and manage the students to avoid Mobile Legends addiction.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The increasing accessibility and popularity of mobile games have

significantly impacted the way people spend their leisure time, especially among

the younger generation. Mobile Legends, a widely popular multiplayer online

battle arena (MOBA) game, has captured the attention of millions of players

worldwide, including students. As mobile devices continue to become an integral

part of daily life, understanding the potential effects of playing Mobile Legends on

students’ academic performance, social interactions, and overall well-being is

crucial. Why is ML addictive? As what The Bohol Chronicle (2021) stated in their

article, it was designed to be addictive. The developers are supposed to have

done their job well if many people are addicted to their inventions. Those games

are meant to be addictive. The more people will play them, and subsequently buy

the upgrades to progress in their game level, the more money for the developers

and owners. It is plain business for them, at the expense of public health. By

examining the extent to which playing Mobile Legends influences Senior High

School students’ academic performance and overall well-being, this research

2

hopes to provide valuable insights for educators, parents, and policymakers.

Furthermore, the findings may contribute to developing effective strategies and

interventions to mitigate any adverse effects and harness the potential benefits of

gaming in fostering a healthy and conducive learning environment for students.

San Agustin Institute of Technology, a prominent educational institution,

has also observed the growing trend of Mobile Legends among its Senior High

School students. These students, who are expected to be highly engaged in their

academic pursuits, may experience varying consequences due to their exposure

to and engagement with the game. According to the Official Gazette of the

Philippines Senior High School “completes” basic education by making sure that

the high school graduate is equipped for work, entrepreneurship, or higher

education. This is a step up from the 10-year cycle where high school graduates

still need further education (and expenses) to be ready for the world. As such, it

is essential to examine how playing Mobile Legends may impact these students’

academic performance, time management, stress levels, and social interactions,

both positively and negatively.

Previous studies have explored the effects of playing video games on

various aspects of adolescents’ lives, such as cognitive development, social

skills, and academic performance. However, there is limited research specifically

focusing on the impact of Mobile Legends on the Senior High School students of

San Agustin Institute of Technology. This study aims to fill this gap in the
3

literature by providing a comprehensive analysis of the potential consequences

of playing Mobile Legends among this particular group of students.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to discover the impacts of Mobile Legends addiction

among Senior High School students of San Agustin Institute of Technology:

1. How frequent do Senior High school students play Mobile Legends?

2. What are the effects of Mobile Legends addiction among Senior High

School students in San Agustin Institute of Technology?

3. What are the strategies of Senior High School students in order to

minimize their Mobile Legends addiction?

Objectives of the Study

This study aimed to determine the impacts of Mobile Legends addiction

among Senior High School students in San Agustin Institute of Technology.

1. Discover how many hours do Senior High School students play Mobile

Legends.
4

2. Explore the effects of Mobile Legends addiction among Senior High

School students in San Agustin Institute of Technology.

3. Discover the strategies of Senior High School students in order to

understand how they minimize their Mobile Legends addiction.

Significance of the study

The purpose of this study is to know how being addicted to mobile legends

affects the Senior High School students in San Agustin Institute of Technology,

this study provides crucial information that will be a great benefit to the following:

Students- This study provides a lesson to the students so they will be

aware of what may possibly affects them as being addicted in playing mobile

legends.

Teachers- This helps the teachers be aware of why mobile legends

impact the academic performance of the students and took responsibility of the

students’ academic performance.

Parents- This study is important for the parents for them to monitor, guide,

and limit their children in playing Mobile Legends.

5

Future Researcher- This study will help the future researchers to have

more knowledge about Mobile Legends impact to the students; they can also use

this as their reference for their studies in the future.

Moreover, this study can contribute to the body of literature on the impact

of Mobile Legends addiction among Senior High School students. The

researchers explored Mobile Legends addiction effects, strategies to minimize

addiction and how frequently the respondents play. Researchers often looked at

the impacts of these factors in regards to Mobile Legends addiction among

Senior High School students at San Agustin Institute of Technology. But this

study lacks more research regarding why the students played Mobile Legends.

For instance, is there any cause or reason why the Senior High School students

of San Agustin Institute of Technology played or became addicted to Mobile

Legends?

Definition of terms

Addicted- Being unable to reduce playing time and having unsuccessful

attempts to quit gaming despite the negative consequences it's causing.

ML- Acronym for “Mobile Legends” a widely popular multiplayer online

battle arena (MOBA) game has captured the attention of millions of players

worldwide, including students.

6

Online Games- games that need an internet connection to be able to play

just like Mobile Legends.

Mobile Legends Addiction – The fact or condition among ML players that

have spent most or all of their time playing ML rather than doing other things like

studying.

Scope and Delimitation

This study is focused on the impacts of mobile legends addiction on the

Senior High School students in the San Agustin Institute of Technology school

year 2022-2023. This study will be conducted on the campus of the San Agustin

Institute of Technology with the help of randomly selected respondents. This

study covers Mobile Legends addiction, which can be described as the excessive

or compulsive use of mobile phones that persists despite serious negative

consequences for personal, social, or academic function. The researchers chose

addiction to Mobile Legends because many relate to this kind of issue, and it is a

commonly occurring issue among teenagers.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter proffers the related literature and studies after the thorough

and in-depth forage done by the researchers. The literature and studies

discussed in this chapter addresses the different ideas, concepts, generalization,

conclusions and also the different development related to the study starting from

the past up to the present. This will serve as a guide for the researchers in

developing the project. Moreover, the information included in this chapter, helps

in familiarizing details that are apposite and similar to the present study.

Addiction on Online Gaming

With Mobile and Online Games increasing in popularity in the current eras

it is no surprise that many of the younger generations are getting addicted

towards the games. The Bohol Chronicle (2021) reported in their article that while

games are originally intended to help reduce stress and anxiety, it has caused

the opposite. Work or school have instead suffered. Both teenagers and adults

are spending money to get access to more of such games. They neglect their

responsibilities. Trying to get ahead in the game. Grusser, Thalemann, and

Griffiths (2007) also stated in their study that like an addiction to alcohol or drugs,
8

gamers show several classic signs of addiction like aggressive attitudes and

behaviors.

As Dr. Chandler (2019) told the NBC News BETTER “Any gamification

platform is explicitly designed to make you want to not put it down and is

designed to [stimulate the] reward pathway in your brain which can

suppress your perception of time”. He also added that a human brain stops

keeping track of time and instead measures units of pleasure in the game. The

next level becomes the marker of the passage of time. This is why people lose

an hour or three without feeling it and soon enough will get addicted. The bright

colors that we see in mobile games beg for our attention and tap into a primal

recognition of alarm, notes Dr. Strohman (2019). Throw in some exciting sounds

and a constantly changing screen — where visuals and audio shift as you go

along — and you’ve got yourself a seductive elixir added Spector (2019) in their

article. This article shows that the bright colors and exciting sounds and cool

characters that can be constantly seen in Mobile Legends is one of the games

main components in capturing the students to play their games which in turn

leads them into being addicted. Like what The Bohol Chronicle (2021)

aforementioned, ML was designed to be addictive. The developers are supposed

to have done their job well if many people are addicted to their inventions. Those

games are meant to be addictive. The more people will play them, and

subsequently buy the upgrades to progress in their game level, the more money

for the developers and owners. It is plain business for them, at the expense of

public health.
9

The Pleasure in Playing Mobile Legends

Mobile Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) for iOS and

Android devices developed and published by Shanghai Moonton Technology

(2016), a game development company based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The

game was launched in 2016. As Kyle Chua (2019) aforementioned the game has

reportedly amassed over 500 million downloads and 75 million active players

since it first launched. Much of its popularity is centered on Southeast Asia,

where the game has established itself as a major esport.

According to Yama (2021), Mobile Legends players also have great

potential to become esports athletes who, like employees, make a lot of money.

In fact, there are parents who have previously prevented their children from

playing Mobile Legends, but instead support them. These parents support their

children, mainly Mobile Legends, when they know there is money to be made.

After all, Mobile Legends players have the potential to make the nation proud

through SEA Games or world tournaments. Ramdhani (2022) added in his article

that by playing often, players will always apply a different strategy in each game.

This will train the player’s brain to be able to determine the various strategies

needed to achieve victory.

10

Behavioral Changes due to Playing

In the case study about the Changes in the Pattern of Social Behavior due

to Mobile Legends Ranking by Rinaldi (2020), he stated that Mobile Legends

cannot be separated from the effects that affect the players, both the positive and

negative impacts. “But the impacts that are felt are more negative” Rinaldi added.

The players tend to be aggressive towards something that is deviant of the

game, and most of the time the players who act deviant in the game, bring it to

behavior in real life and leads to be ‘toxic’ in the community.

Deviance

Social deviations or deviant behaviors as declared by Narwoko and

Suyanto, (2004) are behaviors carried out by individuals or groups in a society

that are considered not in accordance with the habits, rules, and social norms

that apply in the community. A behavior can be categorized as a social deviation

isn’t only by a crime behavior, such as theft, robbery, murder, etc., but acts of

deviant behavior can also be behaviors that can be said to be mild but included

in acts that violate social norms is in the community, for example is talking harsh

words, insulting others, etc. Talking harsh words and insulting others is not

uncommon in players playing Mobile Legends, and majority of the players tend to

reflect this behavior in real life as well.

11

In a study by Quwaider, Alabed, & Duwairi (2019) on The Impact of Video

Games on the Players Behaviors, conclude that there is a relationship between

the video games and the player's behavior. In these studies, the researchers

conclude that the video games have impact on the player personality, like

emotions, reflexes, behaviors, motivations, needs, thinking way and approach

internal and external situations.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This study is supported by the Dopamine theory of Addiction on Online

Gaming, in which Adair (2021) our reward circuitry in our brains is flooded with

dopamine when we play games. This is from Melis et al. (2005) study on the

Dopamine theory of Addiction on Online Gaming which they classified as:

Addictions increase dopamine to such an extent that once the drug or the

stimulus is gone, our body is unable to replicate the same amount of dopamine

naturally. Therefore, when someone is addicted, only the drug or the stimulus, in

which case Mobile Legends, is the only thing that would be able to increase the

amount of dopamine in the addicted body. Dopamine, discovered by Arvid

Carlsson in 1957, is a neurotransmitter in our brains responsible for the feeling of

pleasure. Our body produces it when we feel pleasure, and it is then transmitted

to nerve cells. Dopamine affects different bodily functions, including learning,

motivation, heart rate, blood vessel, kidney function, sleep, mood, lactation,

movement, attention, and nausea. So with Mobile Legends the students will most
12

likely feel get addicted to the game, while feeling unmotivated in school and

doing work in real life.

This is supported by Adair (2021) who stated that the brain of a gaming

addict will get used to this extra dopamine that it gets from video games. Thus, it

will no longer produce dopamine on its own when they don’t play video games.

Adair added that, gamers won’t want to go out and do other things because it is

not pleasurable enough anymore. This can lead to all sorts of mental health

problems, just like drug or alcohol addicts experience these symptoms.

This study is also anchored on the coping mechanism theory by Lazarus

and Gillman. Lazarus and Folkman (1984), as stated by the study of Rew (2005),

used the term coping to describe the “cognitive and behavioral efforts” a person

employs to manage stress, generally categorized as emotion focused or problem

focused coping. Not an individual trait, coping is instead conceptualized by

Lazarus and Folkman as a process. This applies to the study where the students

use all types and kinds of coping mechanisms in order to mitigate the effects of

their Mobile Legends Addiction, and also get rid of it once and for all. According

to their theory, stress coping implies an intricate process of thinking and

assigning meaning to it. They explained the coping mechanism by the stress

cycle where an individual’s perception of the stressful situation decides how he

would cope with it.

13

Chapter III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the methodological methods and procedures

process of the study. It includes the research design, research locale, population

sample, tools and instrument, data gathering procedure, and data analysis. In

addition, this chapter set the procedures to collect, analyze and report data.

Research Design

This study utilized a qualitative research approach using phenomenology

design that aimed to explore the addiction of Senior High School students who

are addicted to playing Mobile Legends. A phenomenological study according to

Creswell (1998), the recommendation also ranges between 5 and 25 interviews

for a phenomenological study. The goal of qualitative phenomenological research

is to describe a "lived experience" of a phenomenon.

Since the research is concerned with the impact of Mobile Legends

addiction among Senior High School students in San Agustin Institute of

14

Technology in the school year 2022-2023, phenomenological research was

recommended as the most appropriate method.

Research Locale

The study will be conducted at San Agustin Institute of Technology. The

respondents will be interviewed inside the campus of San Agustin Institute of

Technology. These respondents will be interviewed face to face. The researchers

chose the place of implementation because it will give the researchers the

needed information for the said research. The study will be conducted in the

second semester of the academic year 2022-2023

San Agustin Institute of Technology (SAIT) was established in 1960 out of

funds solicited from abroad by Fr. Manlio, S.J. the Catholic Priest assigned in

Valencia, Bukidnon. It started as a general high school with 101 students

attending classes in the parish convent.

15

Figure 1

Participants of the Study

The target populations for this study are the Senior High School students

of San Agustin institute of Technology who are playing Mobile Legends. Since,

the study only focuses to the students who are inclined in playing Mobile

Legends, a total of thirteen (13) Senior High School students are the respondents

of the said study.

Research Instruments

The researchers used a self-made questionnaire, then interviewed and

gathered information from the respondents one-on-one with the use of a

smartphone to record the respondent’s responses. The first part was gathering
16

some personal information from the respondents and asked them if they were

addicted to playing Mobile Legends and in terms of how frequent do they play

Mobile Legends. The second part of the questionnaire is the respondent's

perspective on the effects of online games on their selves. The last part of the

questionnaire is the respondent’s response on how the respondents control or

minimize their Mobile Legends addiction.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers ask permission from the selected individual Senior High

School students if they are addicted to Mobile Legends, then will seek approval

from the informants to become a part of the study considering the informed

consent and research ethics. Upon the approval, the researchers will proceed

with the interviews.

The researchers conducted a face-to-face interview and ask our

interviewee to share some in formations about their experiences. After that, they

wrote their statements regarding the student’s experiences and what are the

impacts of Mobile Legends to them. The researcher's will gather perspective to

the both sides, students’ perspective and how it affects them.

17

Data Analysis

The researchers has analyzed the data collected from 13 respondents

within the age range of 16-19 years old from both genders. The answer of the

respondents have proven the statement of Dr. Chandler (2019) on games can

also be a cause of addiction as all of these respondents has been prone to being

addicted in Mobile Legends . The writer mentioned that games are made mostly

for the students' pleasure. In this research, it is found that all of the thirteen

students found the pleasurable that leads them to being addicted to the game.

The literature review by Spector (2019) informed that with bright colors,

intriguing music and cool graphics, this can create an elixir liken to a drug that

can keep gamers addicted in playing the game. As video game usage increases,

academic performance and scores decrease. In confirming how long the

students play mobile legends when they are addicted, the questionnaire’s 1st

question asked how many hours in a day did the students play mobile legends.

Another literature review by Fang-ling Lin et al. (2013) aforementioned

that students spending too much time on online games every week tend to suffer

from worsened learning ability, concentration problems, poor academic

performance, and decreased interactions with other people. The 2nd

questionnaire's question confirms this study by asking the effects or

consequences on the students by excessively playing Mobile Legends.

18

In Lazarus and Folk man (1984) coping mechanism theory where a

person use other terms of managing themselves in order to delegate themselves

from their stress and or addictions. In the 3rd questionnaire, the researchers

asked about what the students' coping strategies in order for them to minimize

their mobile legends addiction.

19

CHAPTER IV

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents results, discussion, and personal insights that the

researchers have gathered through a face-to-face interview with one of the

players addicted to Mobile Legends from Senior High School students at San

Agustin Institute of Technology. It is divided into three tables, each with a total of

three questions.

A total of 13 Senior High School students were surveyed who had different

insights about playing Mobile Legends. The researchers also encountered

several students who quit playing Mobile Legends.

Theme 1. Continuous Play

Table 1 reveals that there was a continuous hours by Senior High School

students playing Mobile Legends. Three participants mentioned that they play

continuously without any breaks. One of the three respondents mentioned that

they start playing in the morning and are surprised that it is already nighttime.

Another respondent mentioned that they sleep around 1-2am and does not listen

to their parents orders about house chores because they are afraid to leave the

game and lose. Another respondent also mentioned that they play almost play 16

hours per day.

These participants play continuously all day without eating or doing

chores. They are so focused on playing Mobile Legends that they even decline

their parent’s orders and even skip their meals. They do not want to do other
23

things for they are too focused on playing Mobile Legends which leads them to

playing the game for too long thus being addicted to the game.

According to Adair (2021), gaming addiction is a compulsive mental health

disorder that can cause severe damage to one’s life. It’s common for a video

game addict to spend over 10 hours a day gaming, usually well into the night,

and many suffer from sleep deprivation. Immersed in their experience, gamers

are known to have poor diets consisting mainly of energy drinks full of caffeine

and sugar. Many are dehydrated and malnourished.

Theme 2. Alternate Hours of Playing

There were 8 participants who said they alternate their hours of playing

due to some reasons. Base on their responses, they play at morning, take a

break for lunch, resume playing in the afternoon and continue playing around 8

o’clock in the evening until dawn, feed their dogs, massaged their grandfather,

clean the house, watch a local series in their television, and continue playing until

the middle of the night or until dawn.

Due to their obligations at home and to themselves, such as cleaning,

feeding the dogs, and eating, the Senior High School students only play

occasionally. They are aware of their obligations to their households and are

aware that their lives do not revolve completely around playing Mobile Legends.
24

According to Beeson (2022), playing online games for alternate hours can

have both positive and negative effects. For the positive effects it improves

memory and brain processing, provides an alternative workout, allows children to

experiment with social experiences, and for the negative effects it can cause

nausea and affect developing eyes, can lead to addiction, and can negatively

impact academic performance.

Theme 3. Night Time Play

Two out of thirteen respondents said that they play at night because the

internet signal at night is strong rather than in the morning. According to these

two respondents, they stay up late to play Mobile Legends because there are no

distraction while playing plus the internet signal is strong. They are also teamed

up with strong players since rookie player’s play in the morning.

The respondents prefer to play at night due to its occurring advantages

where they can play without any distractions from their parents and have a strong

internet connection. But due to this the players may end up having a lack of

sleep. They are very much aware of their responsibilities that they have to do in

the morning which motivates them to play Mobile Legends at night and not going

to sleep. Despite that they are still eager to play Mobile Legends because they

have already started getting addicted to the game.

25

Stevens (2018) has stated that, as playing online games at night can

have both positive and negative effects, the negatives have much more impact

than the positives. While the positive effects in playing online games at night can

improved focus and problem-solving skills for brain development. The negative

effects can affect sleep, and lack of sleep can cause a lot of problems all

throughout the body. It can also lead to addiction and can negatively impact the

gamers’ academic performance.

Theme 4. Low Academic Performance

Table 2 presents the various effects of being addicted to Mobile Legends.

Seven respondents said that being addicted to Mobile Legends heavily affected

their academic performance. The participants neglected and lost focus on their

studies, resulting in low grades and wanting to play all day.

These participants lose the desire to strive hard for school since they find

entertainment and pleasure in playing Mobile Legends. Academic validation does

27

not satisfy them anymore; hence, they find comfort in playing since it gives them

satisfaction as results are achieved after playing, and doing schoolwork burdens

them.

According to Mubarak et al., (2022) the higher the intensity of playing the

mobile legends game, the higher the level of student academic procrastination,

and vice versa if the student has a low intensity of playing the mobile legends

game, the lower the student’s academic procrastination.

Theme 5. Laziness

A total of 6 respondents claimed that Mobile Legends addiction leads to

laziness. Based on the responses of the respondents, they were always scolded

by their parents due to being lazy about doing their house chores and school

activities, they feel weak, gets lazy in engaging physical activities, and even

losing interest in doing tasks because playing comes first. They prefer to play first

that causes them to be lazy.

Due to their desire to play all day, some individuals have lost the

motivation to do their homework and household duties. It has an impact on their

bodies and minds because all they want to do is play, which results in a weak

body from not performing simple tasks to exercise it. It also deceives them into

thinking they want to play, forgetting the tasks they are supposed to do.

According to Stavroski (2023), video games are extremely addicting so if

you’re not disciplined enough to control yourself, you’ll spend hours playing video
28

games without realizing that you just wasted a significant amount of time. Video

games were created to be engaging and interactive and as a result, they can

make you lazier than productive.

Theme 6. Forgets to Eat

Forgetting to eat was one of the effects of Mobile Legends addiction. 4

respondents stated that playing Mobile Legends excessively caused them to

forget eating. The respondent’s statement included that they eat only once,

lacking off food due to not eating, not eating at all, and even catches health

problems like ulcer because they focused more on playing than their health.

Excessive gaming tends to make you forget to eat. Players forget to

check the time as the game progresses, which causes them to forget to eat or to

eat later than necessary. Since their stomachs have to process an empty

stomach, their bodies will become ill if they don't eat.

According to Adair (2022), playing online games for hours can lead to

forgetting to eat. This can have severe implications for physical health, including

dehydration, poor sleep hygiene, physical health atrophy, muscle atrophy,

obesity, and heart problems. In some cases, gaming addiction can cause players

to become detached from normal existence and forget to eat or sleep.

29

Theme 7. Sickness Caused by Radiation

This theme shows that Mobile Legends addiction can cause sickness due

to radiation. Two among the respondents said that their prolonged Mobile

Legends game was the cause of their sickness due to radiation. One response

stated that it affect their eyes because of having blurry vision in the morning, the

other response stated they catch illness because of the radiation.

Prolonged exposure to radiation through mobile phones gives people

different illnesses depending on their bodies. Some people may experience

fever, tiredness, headaches, and eye pain. But the respondents experienced

blurry vision and sickness because of radiation. Long-term exposure to mobile

phone radiation is not recommended because it can harm your health.

According to Tripathi (2020), we have seen headaches, sleep

disturbances, memory disturbances, foggy mind, irritability, impulsiveness, hand

pain, neck pain, poor vision and loss of vision, etc., as a result of excessive use

of mobile.

Theme 8. Lack of Sleep

Lack of sleep is one of the effects of playing mobile legends. 2

respondents stated that their prolonged mobile legends was the cause of their

lack of sleep. They claimed that they don't get enough sleep and stayed up all

night and as a result, it causes insomnia.

30

Being inclined to gaming results to have lack of sleep. Because of the

entertainment they received from playing Mobile Legends, they do not want to

sleep anymore. They tend to continue playing after bedtime resulting to

confusing their body when is the right time to sleep which results to developing

their insomnia.

According to Saner (2023), studies have found that video games are

linked to later bedtimes, more difficulty falling asleep, and fewer hours of sleep.

Players may also find it more challenging to wake up on time and are at an

increased risk of feeling tired the following day.

Theme 9. Change of Behavior

Being addicted to Mobile Legends causes the students change of

behavior. A respondent stated that their prolonged Mobile Legends was the

cause of their change of behavior. They said they get angry and stressed out

easily as a result of excessively playing Mobile Legends.

Playing is supposed to be fun and done occasionally to help relieve stress.

Being indulged in playing every day for a long period of time changes a part of

you. It makes you absorb and imitate things you experience in the game,

resulting in doing them in real life.

According to Quwaider (2019), some of the players may have short

temper it is because they were always felt angry and had aggressive reaction.

Players get aggressive when there is an interruption or when they lose the game.
31

Problem 3. What are the strategies of Senior High School students in order to

minimize their mobile legends addiction?

Theme 10. Self-Control

Table 3 reveals a list of strategies to minimize Mobile Legends addiction. 4

out of 13 respondents stated that self-control was the strategy they used to

minimize their addiction. The respondents statement included that they minimize

their addiction by avoiding excessively playing Mobile Legends, challenging

themselves not to use any gadget, spending their time at school, and if possible,

not going home early to avoid playing.

Controlling themselves will have a good impact on the students. By

controlling themselves, they are able to minimize their addiction, and they will be

more focused on their academics. Online games are meant to be addictive, but if

you know how to control yourself, this will not affect your studies or you as a

student.

Safarina and Halimah (2019) stated that based on some findings, it is

clear that self-control plays a crucial role in minimizing online gaming addiction.

Individuals who struggle with online gaming addiction can benefit from

developing their self-control skills.

33

Theme 11. Uninstalling the Game

This shows that uninstalling the game could make a player minimize or

even stop playing Mobile Legends. Three out of thirteen respondents stated that

they uninstall or delete the game so that they could minimize or stop playing.

Uninstalling the game might help the respondent stop playing Mobile

Legend, as the app is nowhere to be seen on their mobile phone’s home screen.

They will be less tempted to play since the app was uninstalled from the phone.

According to Bateman (2017), if the game is having an absolutely huge

(negative) impact on your life, then you should definitely go ahead and delete it. If

you are not up to deleting it, then you could have a designated time slot for

playing said game and arrange the time you spend on it so that you can do other

things like work, etc.

Theme 12. Seeking another Entertainment

Seeking another form of entertainment is a good technique to minimize

playing this is also a good way to explore new things and not just play Mobile

Legends. There are three respondents who stated this; two of the respondents

said that they take adventures and socialize with others, and the other said that

they make distractions and do something inside the house to minimize playing.
34

By seeking another entertainment, it helps the players reduce their screen

time on their mobile phones. As players focus on other activities instead of

playing on their mobile devices all day, such as going outside and engaging in

physical activity, they also benefit from getting more exercise. Also it prevents

them from getting illnesses from not engaging physical activities.

According to Grinspoon (2020), online gaming addiction is a real concern,

and it is important to find alternative forms of entertainment to minimize its

negative effects. Here are some ideas of alternative forms of entertainment:

engaging in sports, arts, outdoor recreation, reading, board games, music,

exercise, cooking, and therapy.

Theme 13. Academic Performance being Prioritize

This theme shows that prioritizing academics is the strategy that students

apply to minimize their Mobile Legends addiction. Three respondents explicitly

stated that they minimize addiction by prioritizing their studies over playing. All

three respondents mentioned that they focuses on their academics to minimize

their mobile legends addiction.

Mobile Legends is meant to be addictive, but if they know how to prioritize

their academics, they will be a more responsible student. Prioritizing allows us to

identify the most important tasks and give those duties most of our attention.

Simply put, it has a big impact on the student's life. These respondents know
35

their responsibilities well hence choosing to prioritize academics rather than

playing Mobile Legends. These students are competent in terms of their

academic performance and did not let Mobile Legends be a hindrance to their

studies. Playing occasionally reduces students’ academic procrastination.36

According to Mubarak (2022), the higher the intensity of playing the mobile

legends game, the higher the level of student academic procrastination, and vice

versa if the student has a low intensity of playing the mobile legends game, the

lower the student's academic procrastination

Theme 14. Phone Full Storage

Phone full storage was one of the reasons why the students minimize

Mobile Legends addiction. One respondent claimed that they stopped playing

Mobile Legends because their phone storage was full and Mobile Legends needs

a huge storage in able to participate in the game.

Because their phone storage is full, they are able to minimize their Mobile

Legends addiction. Due to full storage, their phone will be unable to download

the most recent update for Mobile Legends, forcing them to quit playing. If the

game is not updated, players will encounter a laggy game and inaccessible

sources.

According to Kingston (2023), storage is important for gaming because it

means your phone can access and load data quickly. With full storage the phone

won’t be able to run the game properly or might prevent it from running at all.
36

Theme 15. Confiscated Phone

Having their phones confiscated for a certain time is one way to minimize

a player for playing Mobile Legends. One participant claimed this because the

participant’s phone always get confiscated every 9 pm so that the respondent

cannot stay up all night playing.

Having your phone taken away just before bed may encourage you to get

a good night's sleep so you can be productive the next day. Your parents want

the best for you, so taking away your phone before bed ensures that you won't

play video games all night long, stay up late, or engage in other risky behavior.

According to Smale et al., (2021), removing cell phones from classrooms

is likely to reduce students’ temptation to check their devices, play games, text,

and surf the internet, consequently enhancing their ability to focus and thus

improving their performance due to greater intake and memory of academic

material.

Theme 16. Broken Phones

Having their phones broken could make the players stop or minimize

playing Mobile Legends. One participant claimed this for the reason that this has

already occurred to the respondent.

37

Having a broken phone makes players quit playing mobile games. This

way, their addiction to Mobile Legends is minimized, and they tend to seek other

activities to entertain themselves.

Phones are a way to help people do their tasks faster, but sometimes they

cause the opposite, just like games are to students. Just like in The Bohol

Chronicle (2021) article found in the related literature section, while games are

supposed to help students ease their stress and anxieties, it have caused the

opposite and only hurt the students by making them addicted to the game. That

is why perhaps having their phones broken will also help students ease their

Mobile Legends addiction.

38

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of findings, conclusions, and

recommendations.

Summary of the Findings

The following themes are based on how frequent do Senior High

School students play Mobile Legends: continuous play, alternate hours of

playing, and night time play. The following themes are based on the effects of

Mobile Legends addiction among Senior High School students: low academic

performance, laziness, forgets to eat, sickness caused by radiation, lack of sleep,

and change of behaviors. The remaining themes are based on the strategies of

Senior High School Students in order to minimize their Mobile Legends addiction:

self-control, uninstalling the game, seeking another entertainment, academic

performance being prioritized, phone full storage, phone being confiscated, and

broken phones.

Senior High School students play Mobile Legends continuously,

alternately and at night time. The effects of being addicted to Mobile Legends are
39

varied from having low academic performance, laziness, forgetting to eat,

sickness because of prolonged radiation exposure, lack of sleep, and change of

behaviors. The strategies or reasons how Senior High School students minimize

their Mobile Legends addiction are mixed with self-control, uninstalling the game,

seeking another type of entertainment, academic performance being prioritized,

phone full storage, phone being confiscated, and broken phones.

Conclusion

To summarize, this study focused on the impact of Mobile Legends

addiction among Senior High School students, examining the effects of being

addicted to Mobile Legends, and discover the strategies of Senior High School to

minimize their Mobile Legends addiction.

The primary effects of being addicted to Mobile Legends is low academic

performance. Reasons provided by the participants included low grades in all

subjects, always being absent, neglected studies, and lost focus on studies.

In terms of strategies to minimize their Mobile Legends addiction, the majority of

participants practiced self-control, uninstalling the game, seeking another

entertainment, and prioritizing their academic performance. These strategies

were particularly useful for those who want to minimize their Mobile Legends

addiction.
40

Recommendations

Based on the study’s findings and conclusions, the researchers

recommend the following:

1. Students should have time management in playing Mobile Legends and

be aware of the possible effects of them being addicted in playing Mobile

Legends.

2. Teachers should teach the students how to manage their time in playing

Mobile Legends and putting first there academic performance.

3. Parents should be responsible and know how to limit, and monitor their

children in playing Mobile Legends. They can play but parents should know how

to limit and take responsibilities so their children won’t be addicted to Mobile

Legends.

4. Future Researchers will have some ideas and knowledge about Mobile

Legends and how it affects the students.
