parallel to the vertical axis

Surveying Question 1 Detailed Solution

Concepts:

The adjustments in transit Theodolite

are of two types:

1. Permanent Adjustments.

2. Temporary Adjustments.

The permanent adjustment are made to

establish the fixed relationships between the
fundamental lines of the instrument, and
once made, they last for long time. The
following are the permanent adjustments in
transit Theodolite:

1. Adjustment of the Horizontal Plate

Levels.
2. Collimation Adjustment: Axis of the
telescope level adjusted to parallel to
the line of collimation.
3. Horizontal Axis Adjustment:
Horizontal axis is perpendicular to
vertical axis when the instrument
is leveled.
4. Adjustment of the Telescope Level or
the Altitude level.
5. Vertical Circle Index Adjustment

The temporary adjustments are made

at each set up of the instrument
before starting taking observations
with the instrument. The following are
the temporary adjustments in transit
Theodolite:

1. Setting up the Theodolite over the

station.
2. Leveling up the Theodolite.
3. Elimination of the parallel.
4. Focusing.

Surveying Question 2:

In chain surveying, the area to be surveyed is

divided into a number of shall well
conditioned triangles. In this regard, which
of the following conditions should satisfy for
the triangle to be well conditioned?

1. No angle is less than 50° or greater

than 100°

2. An angle is less than 20° or greater

than 130°

3. An angle is less than 30° or greater

than 120°

4. No angle is less than 30° or greater

than 120°

Answer (Detailed Solution Below)

Option 3 : An angle is less than 30° or

greater than 120°

Surveying Question 2 Detailed Solution

Explanation:

In chain surveying,

A triangle is said to be well-

conditioned if it can be plotted
accurately by the intersection of arcs
from the end of the baseline.
An equilateral triangle is the best
well-conditioned triangle or ideal
triangle possible.
If not possible to have an equilateral
triangle, it must ensure that no angle
is less than 30º and greater than
120º
120º.

Note:

Well-conditioned triangles are preferred

because their apex points are very
sharp and can be located by a single
‘dot’
‘dot’. In such a case, there is no possibility
of relative displacement of the plotted
point.

Surveying Question 3:

The distance between two points measured

with 30 m chain was 300 m. It was
afterwards found that the chain was 3 cm
too long. What will be the true distance of
the line between the points (in m)?

1. 299.7 m

2. 303 m

3. 297 m

4. 300.3 m

Answer (Detailed Solution Below)

Option 4 : 300.3 m

Surveying Question 3 Detailed Solution

Concept:

If a chain is too short, the measured

distance will be more, the error will be
positive, and the correction will be
negative.

T rue length of line (l)

= Measured length of line (l ′ ) ×
Incorrect length of the chain (L′ )
True length of the chain (L)

Calculations:

With 30 m chain:

Measured length of line = 300 m

True length of chain = 30 m

Incorrect length of chain = 30 + 0.03 =

30.03 m

Therefore, True length of line =

= Measured length of line (l ′ ) ×

Incorrect length of the chain (L′ )
True length of the chain (L)

30.03
= 300 × 30

= 300.3 m

Therefore, True length of line =

300.3 m

Surveying Question 4:

The included angles of a theodolite traverse

are generally measured as

1. clockwise from the forward station

2. anti-clockwise from back station

3. anti-clockwise from forward station

4. clockwise from back station

Answer (Detailed Solution Below)

Option 4 : clockwise from back station

Surveying Question 4 Detailed Solution

Concept:

Methods of Traversing:

The following are the different methods of

traversing:

1. Included-angle method
2. Deflection-angle method
3. Fast-angle (or magnetic bearing)
method

Included-Angle Method

This method is most suitable for

the closed traverse. An included
angle at a station is either of the
two angles formed by the 2
surveying line meeting there. The
method consists simply in
measuring each angle directly
from backsight on the preceding
station.
The angles may also be measured
by reptiition, if so desired. Both
face observation must be taken
and both the vernier should be
read. Included angle can be
measured either clocowise or
anticlowise, but it is better all
angles clockwise, since the
graduations of the theodolite
circle increases in this direction.
The angle measured clockwise
from the back site may be interior
or exterior depending upon the
direction of progress round the
survey

Deflection-Angle Method:

This method is suitable for open traverse

and is mostly employed in the survey of
rivers, coastlines, roads, railways, etc.

Fast-Angle Method:

This method is used to measure the

magnetic bearings and lengths of traverse
legs. However, the angles between the lines
are not measured.

Surveying Question 5:

The suitable contour interval for a map with

scale 1 ∶ 10000 is

1. 2m

2. 5m

3. 10 m

4. 20 m

Answer (Detailed Solution Below)

Option 1 : 2 m

Surveying Question 5 Detailed Solution

Solution:

Contour Interval = 25/ (No. of cm per

km)

(or) Contour Interval = 50/ (No. of

inches per mile)

Given, scale of a map = 1:10000 1 cm

represents 10000 cm

1 cm represents 10000 × 10 −5 = 0.1

km 1 km represents 10 cm

Therefore contour interval = 25 / 10 =

2.5 m

Nearest correct option is option (1)

Surveying Question 7 Download Soln PDF

The permissible error (E) for the Precise

levelling type with distance (D) in kilometre
is given by:

1. E = ± 0.025√D

2. E = ± 0.100√D

3. E = ± 0.012√D

4. E = ± 0.006√D

Answer (Detailed Solution Below)

Option 4 : E = ± 0.006√D

Surveying Question Download Soln PDF

7 Detailed Solution

Concept:

The precision of leveling is ascertained

according to the error of closure. The
permissible limit of closing error depends
upon the nature of the work for which the
leveling is to be done. The permissible
closing error may be expressed as,
E = C × √D
Where,

E = the error in metres,

C = the constant, the value of which depends

upon the type of instrument, nature of the
country, atmospheric conditions and care
and judgement of the level man

D = distance in kilometre

Rough levelling: E = ±0.100 × √D

Ordinary levelling:
E = ±0.025 × √D
Accurate levelling:
E = ±0.012 × √D
Precise levelling:
E = ±0.006 × √D
