The USA is a country of different ethnic groups. Its population is made up of people, notably White,
Hispanic, Asian and African Americans, coming from many parts of the world. While many of them
immigrate to the US to flee wars or to reunite with their families, more and more are coming because
of the opportunities that the country offers. Together they contribute to making the US a culturally
diverse country.
Though ninety percent of the US population can speak or at least understand some English, there's no
official language for the whole country. While almost every language is spoken in the country,
Spanish, Chinese, French and German are among the most frequently spoken non-English
languages. Almost every known religion is practiced in the US. Most Americans (83%) identify

themselves as Christians. A smaller number follow Judaism, Buddhism, Islam and other religions
while the rest don't have any religious beliefs.
While trying to fall in line with the Americans' established ways of life, ethnic groups still wish to
retain their home cultures. People from the same ethnic group tend to live in close communities and
help each other build their lives in the new land.
Though many old-established communities, especially White ones, worry that newcomers will take
away their opportunities, it's undeniable that different ethnic groups contribute greatly to the cultural
diversity of the US.
