The Fixed End Moment is the starting point for moment distribution or similar
methods of frame analysis.

FEM is the support moment if the beam is considered fully encastre or fixed at
each end.

Various methods can be used to derive the FEM depending on the load pattern.
The most general method is to use the slope deflection equation with both ends
having no rotation and no deflection.

Probably too late for the OP.

It depends upon the type of beam. If it is simply supported, or cantilever you can
f8nd out directly by taking moments about the section where you want to get
BM. For fixed beams and continuous beams, tables are available in standard
analysis books, which also will give procedure to obtain the values. If a beam is a
part of a frame, it is better to get the values from a computer program.

1. Master Energy Methods of Finding Deflection.

2. Master Energy Methods of Finding Deflection.

3. Use compatibility Methods. What is compatibility methods , you ask?Ok

then follow me:

Take a Simply Supported Beam, under UDL,calculate angular deflection at the

ends, say it is x radians.

Take the Same simply supported beam, apply unit Hogging moment M at each
end, and calculate angular deflection at each end, say it is u radians.

Then Fixed end Moment is M*(x/u) .Why ?

Because Iam trying to enforce “compatibility of Deflection” at the ends. The

angular deflection is zero, so deflection x is being cancelled by deflection
produced by M*(x/u) hogging moment.
