Relative Pronouns and Adverbs whom, which, that) and relative adverbs (where,
when, why).

Introduction A clause is a group of words with a subject and a predicate. Some


sentences include a dependent clause, which depends on, or gives more information about,
the main clause. A dependent clause cannot stand alone as a sentence.

• The pronouns who, whose, whom, which, and that can introduce a dependent clause.
Use who, whose, and whom when talking about people. Use that and which when
talking about things or places.

• The adverbs where, when, and why can also introduce a dependent clause.

When Gina’s parents lived in Italy, they owned restaurants.
