Chapter 1
The Problem
Introduction
It has been in the nature of humans to adapt and adjust to their environment. It is how
the human race survived for thousands of years. Through evolution, humans have adapted to
the environment of the Earth. Changes in the environment are often the cause of such
adaptations and evolutions. Climate change is one of the biggest factors of human evolution
(Gamble et al, 2017) In the modern world, the humankind continues to adapt and evolve. The
behavior and personality of the person can also adapt based on his or her environment. As an
example of that, a person can act energetic and loud at home but is quiet and composed in
public. Factors such as the people around you can also affect your behavior. When a person is
surrounded in a specific environment or have been exposed to specific factors that affect your
behavior for a long period of time, the person may bring certain habits that he or she has
adapted with him or her. These certain habits are called mannerisms.
Physical reactions, behaviors, and gestures that are routine and habitual in an
individual are known as mannerisms. Mannerisms are essentially repetitive actions that an
individual develops as a result of their environment and upbringing. Habits and rituals are an
important area to research when examining human behavior, including that of non-human
creatures and nature in general (Giovagnoli, 2020) Most of the time, mannerisms are
particular to each person, yet occasionally family members can exhibit similar traits. One of
the main factors affecting a person’s mannerisms in today’s modern world is the media and
information that a person consumes. One of the most prominent platforms of media in this
age is social media
With the rise of the internet social media has been one of the largest platforms of
media to date. The world has evolved in many ways wherein you witness everything
happening to the world with just a click on an app on your phone. The world is truly
evolving into a more technologically centered future. Social media, artificial
intelligence, big data, and augmented reality are just a few of the worldwide social and
technological trends that are embedded in many of the most exciting opportunities today
(Kessler, 2018). Social media, being a platform of media, has its own platforms as well.
Platforms for learning (Google Classroom, etc.), getting information (Google, etc.), and news
(news websites). Entertainment, socialization, and communication platforms cover up a large
percentage of the social media platforms. Examples of these social media platforms are
Facebook, You tube, etc. Recently, a social media platform called TikTok has been taking
over the social media platform by storm.
TikTok is a popular social media app that allows users to make, watch, and share 15-
second videos recorded with mobile devices or webcams. With over 800 million users
globally and average daily usage of 52 minutes, the app has a significant impact and makes
for an excellent platform for disseminating information to a big audience. (Comp et al, 2020)
The app is notable for its addictive quality and high levels of engagement, thanks to its
personalized feeds of quirky short videos set to music and sound effects. Filters, background
music, and stickers can be added to videos by both amateur and professional creators, and
they can collaborate on content and create split-screen duet videos even if they are in
different locations.
As of this moment, TikTok has shown to be one of the most influential social media
platforms on the planet. Being a one of the biggest social media platforms, it is bound to
cause behavioral and habitual changes to its users. Because of this, people that are exposed to
TikTok or have been using the app for a long period of time can often adapt what the content
that they are consuming on a daily basis through the TikTok app in the form of mannerisms.
The researchers decrypted that one of the major factors in the development of mannerisms
and habits of a student is the content he/she is taking on a daily basis from social media,
specifically the TikTok app.
Conceptual Framework
In the figure above the box on the left represent the independent variables which
include the number of hours a respondent spends on the TikTok app and the content that is
being fed to the respondents using the TikTok app. On the other hand, the box on the right
includes the dependent variables of the study which include the mannerisms developed by the
respondents in terms of their attitude, habits, and lifestyle. This box also includes the mental
health of the respondents. The arrow in the figure show that the right box which contain the
dependent variables are dependent to the independent variables present in the left box.
This study utilizes the Independent Variable and Dependent Variable model. The
independent variable consists of the number of hours the respondents are spending on the
TikTok app, and the content they are watching on the TikTok app. It also includes the life
status (student), age, grade level (Grade 11 and 12), and Senior High school strand (HUMSS
and ABM) of the respondents. These variables serve as potential predictors for the outcome
under the dependent variables.
The dependent variable of the study consists of the mannerisms developed by the
respondents. This includes the attitude, lifestyle, and habits of the respondents. These
outcome variables are dependent on the independent variables of the study namely the
number of hours the respondents are spending on the TikTok app, the content they are
watching on the TikTok app, their life status, age, grade level, and Senior Highschool strand.
A possible relationship between the independent and dependent variables is explored.
This study aims to uncover the mannerisms developed by students in Grade 11 and
12 Senior High School ABM and HUMSS students.
1. For how long have the HUMMS and ABM Students have been using the tiktok
application?
2. What is the percentage of HUMMS and ABM students have developed the following
mannerisms using the tiktok application:
(1) Lingo (Forda ferson, etc.)
(2) Gestures (TikTok dance trends, etc.)
(3) Ideals (Top G mindset, etc.)
3. Is there a significant effect posed by the developed mannerisms to the mental health
of SHS ABM and HUMMS Students?
Null Hypothesis
There is no significant effect posed by the developed mannerisms using TikTok
app to SHS ABM and HUMSS students.
The study aims to uncover the influence of the TikTok app towards the development
of mannerisms in ABM and HUMSS grade 11 and 12 Senior High School students.
Therefore, the study will be advantageous to the following:
Students. The study will help them understand the influence the TikTok app has on them as
students and how the influence it brings can influence their behavior and lifestyle as well.
This study will give light to the students and the content that they are watching on the
TikTok.
Teachers. The study will allow them to understand the reasons behind the mannerisms of
their students so they can use this knowledge and apply it to their teaching. Through this the
student will have a better learning experience.
Parents. The study will allow them to understand the changes in the behaviors of their
students and their habits. This will allow them to have better insight in handling their
children.
Community. The study will allow the community to have better knowledge in the
development of the behaviors of students and with this knowledge it will give them the
means to facilitate the content that influences the students.
Future Researchers. The study will provide the necessary data that researchers in future will
need in their future researchers. The research can also be used as a tool for solving future
problems.

Chapter 2
Methodology
Research Design
This research utilizes the survey research design to collect data and to track the
mannerism developed by senior high school students in Ozamiz City National High School,
particularly in grades 11 and 12 AMB and HUMSS students in utilizing the TikTok
application. Correlational research examines the connection between two variables. It is non-
experimental, which means no variables are changed or under the experimenter's control (Adi
Bhat, 2016).
Research Locale
The study will be conducted at Ozamiz City National High School (OCNHS) located
at Bernad Street 7200, Ozamiz City Misamis Occidental. It is a public school that has 5
Senior High School strands; Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM),
Accountancy Business and Management (ABM), Technical-Vocational-Livelihood Strand
(TVL), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), and General Academic Strand (GAS).
This is where the researchers will find subjects to act as responders in the survey. The data
acquired from the responders will be used to assess the mannerism they developed in using
the TikTok app.
Among these strands, the researchers choose the respondents from the ABM and
HUMSS strands within the Grade 11 and 12 students. There is a total of 702 grade 11 and 12
HUMSS students, and 194 grade 11 and 12 ABM students. The total population of the study
is 896 Grade 11 and 12 HUMSS and ABM students. Out of the 896 Grade 11 and 12
HUMSS and ABM students, 288 students will be chosen as respondents for the study. The
HUMSS and ABM strands comprises 16 sections in total, therefore 18 students from each
section will be chosen as respondents for the study. Purposive sampling will be used in
choosing the respondents.
Research Procedure
The main objective of this study is to unveil the mannerisms developed by ABM and
HUMSS grade 11 and 12 senior high school students due to the TikTok application. The
researchers utilize physical questionnaires to survey and to collect data efficiently. The
respondents will be first given a piece of paper containing the consent form before taking the
survey. The researchers guarantee, that no respondents will be forced to answer the survey
and thus will respect their decision. If they agree to participate in the survey, the researchers
will then proceed to collect the questionnaire. The researchers will then interpret all of the
information gathered. For the study to be completed effectively, the data will serve as the
foundation or analysis.
Research Instrument
The researchers prepare physical questionnaires for the respondents to answer. The
survey questionnaires were formulated with several questions. The gathered data will be
calculated using the appropriate statistical tool. With the help of these tools, the data collected
from the online survey will be analyzed, interpreted, and tallied accordingly.
Statistical Treatment of Data
Responses to the questionnaire given to the grade 11 and 12 HUMMS and ABM
students were statistically analyzed with the data requirement of the study. The researchers
will use the proper statistical tools in order to analyze the data provided. Descriptive statistics
such as frequency count, mean, and percent are considered.
Chapter 4
This chapter reports the findings, analysis, and interpretation of the data gathered to
uncover the mannerisms developed by Senior High School Students taking HUMSS and
ABM tracks of Ozamiz City National High School. The answers provided by the HUMSS
and ABM students of Ozamiz City National High School through a physical survey were
analyzed and interpreted.
For how long have you been using the TikTok application? F %
2-5 months 21 7%
X= 3.66
Table 1 shows the frequency of the response of the respondents and its percentage.
The gathered data shows that 133 of the respondents have been using the TikTok application
for 1-2 years. The data gathered also shows that 21 of the respondents have been using the
TikTok application for 2-5 months. The mean of the frequency of the respondents is 3.66 or if
rounded of to a whole number is 4. This means that most of the respondents have been using
the TikTok app for 1-2 years.
ByteDance's TikTok is a video-sharing social network service that aims to "inspire
creativity" and "offer joy" to its users, according to its website (Yuxin Yang, 2020). TikTok
has been one of the biggest media platforms in the past years. TikTok has 1 billion active
users per month. TikTok has received 3 billion downloads since its launch in 2016, adding
383 million installs in the first half of 2021 (Brian Dean, 2022)
Although the TikTok application was launched in 2016, it really grew in the year
2018 being downloaded more than 104 million times. Therefore, most of the users of the
TikTok application have been using the application for at least 1 year to 2 years , and at most
7 years.
In Table 2 shows the frequency and percentage of students, purpose of using and
installing the tiktok application. The gathered data here shows that the frequency of students
that use it for entertainment is 161 which has the most frequency of the respondents’ total
sample size. Senior High School Students that use it for other purposes is a frequency of 56
of the total sample size. Students that use it for more than 1 purpose is a frequency of about
53 of the total sample size. Students that use it for Information is about a frequency of 7.
Students that use it for Education is a frequency of 6, Lastly Students that use it for business
is only a frequency of 5. The total mean is about 3.20 but it is needed as a whole number, so
we round it off, this also means that most of the Students/respondents use it for entertainment
purposes.
The Use of the tiktok application varies from person to person they either use it for
entertainment, information, or other purposes as tiktok is a useful tool, making their users
almost instantly getting the needs they want. Utilizing TikTok application as media for
learning English pronunciation. In International Conference on Education of Suryakancana

very influenced 13 5%
X= 2.98
Table 3 shows the percentage of respondents in terms of how much they influence by
the TikTok application. The gathered data present the highest percentage of responses of
forty-seven percent with an interpretation of "slightly influenced" which came from one
hundred thirty-six students-respondents. The second to the highest percentage was twenty-
two percent with an interpretation of "influenced" and seventeen percent of responses with an
interpretation of "not much influence" given by fifty students-respondents. The mean of the
data is 2.98 which means that most of the respondents are slightly influenced by the TikTok
Application.
TikTok applications have become one of the fastest-growing platforms in the world
because of their various features, like creating 15 seconds videos with special filters and use
of songs that are currently famous which make users enjoy it. TikTok has a profound
influence on the young ones as it spread over the world in terms of educational, social, and
perceptual ways (Guo 2022).
Table 4. Influence of the TikTok Application Towards the Different Aspects of Life of
the Respondents
Which part of your life has the TikTok application influenced you the most? F %
Lifestyle 56 19%
social life 55 19%
habits 55 19%
relationships 12 4%
personality 19 7%
mentality 20 7%
others 15 5%
more than 1 answers 49 17%
X= 3.86
Table 4 shows the frequency of the response of the respondents and its percentage. On
the lower part of the table, the mean of the data collected is located which is 3.86. The table
shows that the TikTok application influenced most of the respondents’ lifestyle. With it
garnering the highest frequency of 56.
According to (Riaz & Mushtaq, 2019) TikTok’s main mission not only aims to deliver
knowledge but also to create a productive hub, present and motivate users and this idea helps
their strategy in product growth. A large fraction of content creators on TikTok are lifestyle
influencers. In which they take part as role models of their audiences. The table also shows
that the TikTok application has the least influence on the respondents’ relationships, with
only a frequency of 12.
Lingo (Slang): F %
Kaon 22 8%
Conyo 33 11%
others 12 4%
X=4.98
Table 5 shows the percentage of respondents in terms of how much they imitate what
they see on TikTok application. The gathered data present the highest percentage of
responses of fifty percent of the population where they answered more than 1 answer which
came from one hundred forty-five students-respondents. The second to the highest percentage
is twenty-one percent of the population, where they answered the term "forda person" which
sixty students-respondents responds to it, and eleven percent of answers with the term
"Conyo" given by thrifty three students-respondents, followed by eight percent, twenty-two
students-respondents who answered with the term "kaon", and four percent whom answered
"others" which twelve students-respondents answered. And lastly one percent of the
population that answered "sana pina billboard mo" with two students-respondents. The mean
for question 10 (Slang) is 4.89
TikToker's own bodies and voices are featured in the content, as they dance, sing, or
simply speak their minds or tell stories. If gender is defined by performance (which includes
things like clothing choice and vocal inflection), then any audio and/or visual platform
automatically communicates gender and other aspects of intersectional identity in ways that
text-based platforms cannot. Because "perform" is an action word, video platforms are
especially good at communicating gendered performance - while images can communicate
gender through things like a subject's clothing choice, the image does not show that choice in
motion. Silent video and audio-only performances show the subject in motion, but each
leaves something to the imagination, whether it's the subject's inflection or facial expressions
and gestures
In this way, the audio-visual medium of video allows for a more nuanced portrayal
that focuses on the process of automedial/gendered becoming. TikTok videos are limited to
about a minute ("TikTok Video Length & Video Formatting Guide," n.d.), but many are
shorter to avoid losing audience attention. Because of the time constraint, TikTokers must
make their point quickly, which appears to encourage the use of illustration through audio-
visuals rather than lengthy explanation. When TikTokers use words, they do so sparingly,
which may necessitate planning ahead of time and/or editing the content afterward. If, on
TikTok, identity construction is more visible, many TikTokers appear to see this transparency
as a benefit rather than a disadvantage (Wynne et al., 2021).
Gestures F %
Kaldag 30 10%
Twerking 45 16%
Macho Dancing 4 1%
X= 3.42
Table 6 shows the percentage of respondents in terms of how much they imitate what
they see on the tiktok application. The gathered data present the highest percentage of
response of forty-nine percent of the population where they answered “others” which came
from one hundred forty-two students-respondents they might know all of thde dances showed
in the choices or more, followed by sixteen percent of the population answered “twerking”
dance which came from forty-five students-respondents and 10 percent of the population we
took answered the “kaldag” dance, which came from thirty students-respondents, lastly the
one percent of the population that answered “macho dancing” came from four students-
respondents. The mean for table 6 is 3.42.
Tiktok is a popular social networking app for sharing music-based videos, where
users may make quick dance and meme videos, lip syncing, and dancing have become
common user performance techniques participants finished their dance performances with the
gestures in addition to the dance steps. The majority of videos might be a collection of
attempts to complete the dance challenge before publishing the first effective video
performance.
Ideas F %
Top G Mindset 17 6%
LGBTQ+ 23 8%
others 79 27%
X=3.92
Table 7 shows the frequency of the response of the respondents and its percentage.
The gathered data shows that 17 of the respondents have adopted the Top G mindset by using
the tiktok app. 82 of the respondents acquired more awareness about Gender Equality
because of the TikTok application. 23 of the respondents acquired more awareness about
LGBTQ+ community. 19 of the population acquired more awareness about Black Lives
Matter. 79 answered others. And 51 had more than 1 answers.
Females now have a major role in more civic obligations and have greater
opportunities to speak up as educational equality becomes more widely acknowledged.
However, it can be challenging for women to have the same benefits as men and to play an
important role in the legal system and public administration. Mothers are considered to be
closely bonded to their families, especially in some underdeveloped nations. The #MeToo
campaign is the most well-known example of the wave of feminism, which engages in online
and in-person engagements. The Internet has created a "speaking" culture based on this
sociological trend, enabling an international feminist community and empowering feminists
to become a trendy topic in today's society (Munro, 2013).
Chapter 5
This chapter presents the summary, findings, conclusions drawn, and their
recommendations made based on the results of the study.
Summary of Findings
The researchers interpreted and analyzed the frequency, percentage, and mean of the
raw data collected. The researchers used these statistical tools to determine the mannerisms
developed by HUMSS and ABM students from using the TikTok application.
2. The students from the HUMSS and ABM Senior High School tracks of Ozamiz City
National High School Have developed certain gestures, lingo, and ideas that can be
considered as mannerisms. Gestures other than “twerking”, “kaldag”, and “macho dancing”
were developed by most of the respondents. The respondents also developed more than one
lingo or language type mannerisms among “forda person”, “kaon”, “conyo”, and “sana pina
billboard mo”. The TikTok application also imprinted certain ideas among the respondents.
Most prominently the gained more ideas about gender equality. However, the respondents
also gained ideas other than the “Top G mindset”, “gender equality”, “LGBTQ+”, and “Black
Lives Matter”.
3. Most of the respondents are shown to be slightly influenced by the TikTok application. The
use of the TikTok application has affected most of the aspects of the HUMSS and ABM
student’s lives, specifically their social life, lifestyle, and habits.
Conclusions
1. The influence of the tiktok application on the respondents is slightly influential given that
most respondents have been using the application for 1-2 years. This was shown in the
frequency of the Longevity of Usage of the Respondents and frequency of the Influence of
the TikTok Application Towards the Respondents. The length of exposure on the app was
enough for the respondents to be slightly influenced.
2. The Tiktok application has played a role in the development of certain mannerisms among
its users specifically students, though features of the TikTok application have encouraged
users to be creative and playful in their content leading them to the emergence of mannerisms
Overall, the TikTok application has developed certain gestures, lingo and ideas that can be
considered as mannerisms.
3. With most of the respondents having used and installed the TikTok application for 1-2
years, The researchers conclude that this amount of exposure led the students to be slightly
influenced by the TikTok application. The TikTok application influenced not just the habits
of the students but also other aspects of their life in a similar manner. Consequently, their
social life and their lifestyle have been affected with their use and exposure of the TikTok
application.
4. With regard to the findings, the researchers reject the null hypothesis.
Recommendations
Based on the findings and conclusions, the following recommendations were drawn:
1. It is recommended that senior high school students should use the tiktok application mainly for
good purpose and not develop bad habits from the TikTok application . It is also recommended that
the developers of the tiktok application should give prior guidelines to their users and prohibit
negative contents that may disturb the viewers especially students.
2. Mannerisms are only developed depending on the how the person wants to be influenced or not. It
is recommended that each person must be responsible for the things that they do and the things that
they take part in on the daily basis as these things can determine the mannerisms and habits a person
can develop.
3. It is advised that the researchers should provide more options regarding the certain mannerisms
each respondent developed in the aspect of gestures, lingo, and ideas. In this way, the respondents can
indulge more in uncovering the mannerisms that they may unconsciously developed. Through this, the
researchers can have a better understanding on the problem and can help in providing better results.
4. It is recommended that future researchers use the study when tackling topic such as this. The study
will hopefully give them more insight regarding the effects of the TikTok application and the certain
mannerisms one can develop when using the Tiktok application
