Question # 1: [25 Marks]

The pin-jointed coupling shown in Fig. Q1 is constructed from steel of rectangular cross-section
and is designed to transmit a tensile force ‘P’. Given that the steel pin has a dimeter of 15 mm,
determine the maximum permissible tensile force to be transmitted by the joint, if the allowable
stresses for the steel used are 150 MPa in tension, 75 MPa in shear and 120 MPa in bearing
pressure.

Hint: You must examine all of the stress states in the plate, clevis and pin.

Question # 2: [25 Marks]

a) Given that the elastic shear stress distribution in a circular member is given by   G r ,
prove that the externally applied torque for a circular cross section is T  GJ . All terms
have their usual meaning. [5 Marks]

b) The 200 kW prime mover (motor) shown in Fig. Q2 is used to transmit power to the three
loads through a transmission shaft. Assuming that the maximum allowable shear stress in
the transmission shaft is 200 MPa and that the ratio of the inner to the outer diameters
d i / d o  0.8 , find the dimensions of the cross section of the shaft given that it rotates at
5000 rev/min. You may assume that there is 20% power loss between the input and output
powers. [20 Marks]
