II. Week 3
1. Of all the members of Jose Rizal’s family, who do you think had been the most
influential to his life? Explain your answer by citing a specific situation.

Dr. Jose Rizal's upbringing was marked by the support of a family that played a
pivotal role in his achievements, both in the Philippines and abroad. Amidst the
influential members in his family, I personally believe that his mother, Teodora Alonso
Realonda, is the most influential person in his life. Teodora was instrumental in shaping
Rizal's educational journey, recognizing and nurturing his exceptional intelligence from a
young age. She not only provided him with the necessary books and materials for early
learning but also ensured he received beyond average education. Teodora's unwavering
support propelled Rizal to excel academically, laying the foundation for his future
successes. Furthermore, Teodora infused Rizal's early years with stories of Filipino
heroes and historical figures, instilling in him a profound sense of pride and national
identity. This exposure to the struggles of his people profoundly influenced Rizal's later
activism, igniting his passion for social change and independence. Teodora's influence
extended beyond academics. She supported Rizal's love for literature, poetry, and art.
Her encouragement nurtured his literary talents, which would later become a driving
force in the Filipino nationalist movement. Moreover, despite facing persecution from
Spanish authorities, Teodora displayed remarkable tenacity and resilience. Her ability to
endure adversity served as a powerful example to Rizal, strengthening his resolve in the
face of challenges. In light of these circumstances, it is evident that Teodora Alonso
Realonda's unyielding encouragement, moral guidance, and steadfast support
profoundly shaped Jose Rizal's character, intellect, and determination for social reform
and independence. She emerged as one of the most significant influences in Rizal's life,
inspiring him to dedicate himself wholeheartedly to the defense of freedom and the rights
of the Filipino people.

2. How was the value of good education manifested in the life of Rizal?

Rizal's education was the cornerstone of his academic brilliance, encompassing

languages, sciences, arts, and humanities. His knowledge enabled him to challenge
injustice and promote social reforms in addition to enabling him to engage in insightful
intellectual discourse and critically analyze societal issues. He strongly opposed Spanish
colonial rule in his writings, highlighting the pressing need for social and political change.
His powerful writings, the product of his extensive education, struck an emotional
connection with readers and fueled the nationalist movement. During his travels and
studies abroad, his education gave him the knowledge and abilities to represent the
Philippines, enabling him to communicate the experiences of his people to powerful
individuals and foreign governments. Despite pervasive injustices, Rizal chose a
nonviolent mode of response, believing in the transformative power of intellectual and
moral enlightenment. His education gave him the conviction that morality and knowledge
could overthrow oppressive systems. Rizal's unwavering devotion to education was
more than just a source of personal pride. It also served as the inspiration for his
advocacy, writings, and projects. Inspire future generations of Filipinos to embrace
knowledge and enlightenment as a catalyst for national liberation, he boldly challenged
accepted norms and led social change on the basis of his education.

3. What can you say about Rizal’s relationship with his parents and siblings?

The bond between Jose Rizal and his parents and siblings was multifaceted but
still loving. His mother Teodora Alonso Realonda played a significant role in shaping his
moral compass and mind. She supported his education while also fostering in him a
deep sense of social responsibility. Teodora had a significant impact on Rizal's
character, and his father, Francisco Mercado, provided essential financial support for his
education. There were occasional arguments within his large family, which included
younger sisters and older brothers, but there was also a strong sense of support and
harmony. Despite his difficult nationalist and academic commitments, Rizal frequently
communicates with his family. The value he placed on family ties was made clear by the
abundance of love and gratitude in his letters. His family served as his inspiration and
source of support. To sum things up, love, respect, and cooperation were the defining
characteristics of Rizal's relationship with his parents and siblings.
