Unit 6 Systems of Equations and Inequalities

Solving Systems by Graphing

Example: Graph each system of equations. Then determine whether the system has no solution,
one solution, or infinity many solutions. If the system has one solution, name it.

• 𝑥𝑥 = 2, 3𝑥𝑥 − 𝑦𝑦 = 8
• 2𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 = −4, 5𝑥𝑥 + 3𝑦𝑦 − 6
3 2 1
• 6 − 𝑦𝑦 = 𝑥𝑥, 𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 = 4
8 3 4

Solving System by Substitution

Example: Use substitution methods to solve each system of equations. If the system does not
have exactly one solution, state whether it has no solution or infinitely many solutions.

• 8𝑥𝑥 + 2𝑦𝑦 = 13, 4𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 = 11

• 𝑥𝑥 = 4𝑦𝑦 + 5, 𝑥𝑥 = 3𝑦𝑦 − 2
• −0.3𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 = 0.5, 0.5𝑥𝑥 − 0.3𝑦𝑦 = 1.9

Solving Systems by Elimination

Example: Use elimination methods to solve each system of equations

• 3𝑥𝑥 − 4𝑦𝑦 = −10, 5𝑥𝑥 + 8𝑦𝑦 = −2

• 2𝑥𝑥 − 3𝑦𝑦 = 2, 5𝑥𝑥 + 4𝑦𝑦 = 28
