THE GRANDPARENTS
SAISHAA’S GRANDMOTHER

Saishaa’s grandmother lived in a small


home in Mumbai with her parents and all
her 5 brothers and sisters. They all lived
peacefully and happily without fighting
For the mass media questions, she
mentioned the use of radios for gathering
information and hearing about the news,
as well as reading books for
entertainment. At their time it was not
very necessary as they had their ways to
keep themselves busy before the invention
of electronic devices like phones and
computers.
VIRIKA’S GRANDPARENTS

Virikas grandmother lived in the state


of Gujarat, India with her parents. In
his interview about the mass media
questions, Virikas grandfather
mentions how big of a deal it was when
coloured films were introduced and
shortly after channels on the tv were
launched in colour making it such a big
change in the evolution of mass media.
TIANA’S GRANDFATHER

Tianas Grandfather lived with 6 siblings along with


his parents. His parents families had 5 people each. At
present, Tiana’s grandfather is 76 years old. When he
was in school, he used to watch documentary films
once or twice a year and shortly after the radio was
made. The news was announced on the radio but after
he got married, that is at 27-28 years old, the
television was launched but in black and white as the
concept of coloured films did not exist then. He would
watch TV once or twice in a week at his neighbours
house. He mentions that only 2-3 channels were
available on the TV and it cost about ₹2000 or
₹3000 and it was really small. When films began
screening in cinemas, movie tickets were extremely
cheap. His parents used to give his brothers and him
just ₹1 for all three of them to be able to watch the
movie.
YUVADITYA’S GRANDMOTHER

Yuvadityas grandmother lived with 9


siblings out of which 8 of them were
married. They were a happy family who
enjoyed spending time with each other
and got along well. When she was a
teenager the Tape recorder was a
famous type of media to listen to
music. She also mentions the box TV
being launched in black and white film
when she was 15 years old.
Generation 2

THE PARENTS
SAISHAA’S MOTHER

Saishaa’s mother lived with 3 other people


on her house and grew up with her
parents and older brother.
For the mass media question about a
development in the media landscape, she
remembers the launch of the first
commercial pagers being a turning point
for human communication devices. It played
such importance in the invention of mobile
phones and it is shocking how far we have
come with technology today.
SUKRITI’S MOTHER

From Sukriti's interview with her mother she found out that her
mother's family was nuclear. Her parents, older brother, and
herself were the sole members of the family at first. Her father
worked for the government and had to travel frequently, and her
brother was at boarding school, so she lived at home with her
mother. Her mother was a homemaker who had to care for the
house, but she also taught at a local college as a hobby because
she had a PhD in history. As the youngest kid, she was spoiled,
but her role altered after her older brother died and her two
younger siblings were born. She was now the oldest and had to
take care of her younger siblings. Proceeding to the interview
about mass media, Sukriti's mom tells that newspapers,
television, cinema and telephones existed as forms of mass media.
She remembers how the television was box and came with 8
buttons for channels and no remote. When asked what were the
most popular forms of media she said the newspaper, television
and cinema. She stated that The Times of India was the most
popular newspaper, Zee and Sony were the most popular
television channels and Akashvani was the most popular radio
channel.
VIRIKA’S FATHER

In his interview, Virikas father mentions


watching TV once or twice a week,
generally for about an hour or two with
family or friends. A significant event he
experienced as a teenager was the
coloured Tvs being announced or the
launch of the VHS - which provided an
experience like an at home movie
theatre.
TIANA’S FATHER

Growing up, Tiana’s father lived with his


parents in Borivali in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
After he got married, he shifted to his new
home in Vile Parle which is also in Mumbai,
with his wife, and now two daughters. Moving
on the mass media questions, he mentions
that as a teenager he personally used
newspapers and television as a source of
media. They were primarily used for
entertainment and information. Both of these
forms of media were very effective for him to
gain the knowledge of the situation of the
outside world
YUVADITYA’S MOTHER

Yuvadityas mother mentions that she


grew up with a family of her
grandparents, her parents, her sister and
herself. Moving onto the mass media
interview, her answer to the question
about the cost of media when she was
growing up was that she usually spent
just ₹1 for a newspaper to ₹50-₹60 for
a ticket to the movies.
Generation 3

OURSELVES!
SAISHAA

Saishaa begins her interview by mentioning how


many people her parents’ families consisted of.
Her mother’s- 4 people. Her mother, her parents
and her older brother. Her father’s- her father
and his parents along with his younger sister and
older brother. He also lived with his 5 cousins and
their parents, making them a total of 14 people
living together. Moving on to the mass media
interview, Saishaa mentions that every media
device or media type exists as she’s growing up
today. From mobile phones to newspapers and
magazines, and even cinemas to watch movies on
the big screen. She also adds that the use of
radios today have decreased in use but have not
completely been discontinued.
SUKRITI

Sukriti lives with 5 other people: her parents, her


older sister and two younger sisters in Mumbai.
Moving on to her mass media interview, she states
that she spends a lot of time either on her phone or
watching the television and uses it very often. She also
mentions that she watches television mostly with her
family. Sukriti says that in her opinion, earlier, mass
media was about spreading information and now it is
all about interacting with people from all over the
world. She also states that mass media was not as
prominent before and most homes didn't even have a
television. But today, it has become an integral part of
society and every house has a television and the
internet in almost every corner of the world.
VIRIKA

Virika lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra in


Juhu with her family. For her mass media
interview, on being asked the question
about the amount of money you have to
spend on buying these forms of media, she
gave the example of buying a movie ticket
to the cinema. It costs roughly ₹300 to a
varying ₹700-₹800 depending on the
film, time, and place.
TIANA

In her interview Tiana states, that her family


is hard-working, loving and caring. Her father
is a businessman, her mother is a housewife
and her sister studies computer engineering in
college. A memory of development in the media
landscape for her is definitely that when she
was younger, she used to watch cartoons on
the television every day after school but ever
since the OTT (over the top) platforms such
as Netflix, Disney+, Hotstar, Prime Video etc.
have been developed, they have slowly been
discontinued.
YUVADITYA

Yuvaditya mentions an important


historical event when he was a teenager
being the COVID-19 outbreak. For his
mass media interview, he mentions that
he uses mass media to communicate
with his friends and family and believes
it’s important to do use these medias
and the internet in such a technology
dependent time.
