• Review

Does anyone remember our topic last - Claire (student) raised her right
Friday? hand and said: Teacher! I
remember our previous topic.

Is that so? Can you recall the title of the - Claire stood up and said: Yes,
lesson that we had discussed last Friday? Teacher. The topic that we
had discussed last Friday is all
about the Light and its
definition.
Very good, Claire! Now that she already - Raine (student) stood up and
mentioned the title, Raine, can you said: Yes, Teacher! Light is a
elaborate what is light? form of energy that enables us
to see all the things around us.

Excellent, Raine! It seems that you really

understood our topic last Friday.

B. Developmental Activities

1. Motivation

So, before we go to our main topic for

today, I want to do a little experiment with
all of you first, this is called “the flashlight
and sun experiment”. I need you to
prepare a ¼ sheet of paper.

For the first experiment, turn off all the lights

and shut the covers of the window.

Then, I will be giving each of you a small

flashlight.

Now, turn on the flashlight and observe the

light that is being produced. I will give you
2 minutes to take note of your
observations.

Times up!

For the second experiment, take a hold of

your pen and paper because we will be
going outside.

Now, I want all of you to observe the

sunlight that the sun gives out. Again, I will
give you 2 minutes to take note of your
observations.

Times up! Class, let us all go back inside our

classroom.

So, what did you observe about the first - Teacher!

experiment? Anyone?
Yes, Heather? What did you observe? - In the first experiment, I
observed that the flashlight
produces light when being
turned on. The light produced
by flashlight is limited and
small. The color of the light
produced by flashlight
appears to be white or
yellowish. The light from the
flashlight can be controlled by
the switches. Also, I observed
that flashlights are portable
and can be carried around.

Very well said, Heather!

Now, who can give me their observations - Teacher!

for the second experiment?

Yes, Eli? What are your observations? - My observations regarding the

second experiment are that
the sun’s color appears to be
bright yellow or white. The sun
is very bright, and it provides
daylight which makes it
possible for me to see my
surroundings. Its shape is more
like a round disc glowing in the
sky. I can also feel the warmth
of the sun on my own skin.

Excellent, Eli!

With all the observations that you have - Teacher!

noted down, can anybody differentiate
the two experiments?
Yes, Sabby? - The difference between the
two experiments is the size of
the light, the light produced
by flashlight is small and
localized while the sun’s light
diffused and spread out in all
direction. Second, I can
control the light of the
flashlight by switching it on/off,
however, the sun is always
present in the day and cannot
be turned on or off. Also, the
light produced by flashlight is
much dimmer than sunlight.
Lastly, the flashlight is man-
made while the sun is a
natural light source.

Very good Sabby!

Now, that you have shared all your - Teacher!

observations and even identified the
differences between the sun’s light and
the flashlight. Can anybody guess what is
our topic for today?

Yes, Claire? - I think our topic for today is the

different sources of light which
is the natural and man-made
light source.

Excellent, Claire!

2. Presentation/Discussion

Class, from the experiments that we have

conducted earlier, we have already
known the different sources of light which
is the natural and man-made.

Natural sources are those found in nature

or the environment. Examples of natural
sources of light are the sun and stars.
Can anybody give some more examples - Teacher!
of natural sources of light?

Yes, Eli? - Lightning, fireflies, and lava,

teacher.

Very good, Eli!

On the other hand, Artificial sources are

those made by people. Examples of
artificial sources of light are light bulbs and
flashlights.
- Teacher!
Can anybody give some more examples
of man-made sources of light?

- Candles, torches, and

Yes, Samantha? matches, teacher.

Very good, Samantha!

Now, what do you think is the importance - Teacher!

of light in our everyday lives?

Yes, Sabby? - I think the importance of light

in our everyday lives is that it
helps us to see the world
around us. It helps us to witness
the God’s beautiful creations.
Light is also important for
studying and learning, it helps
us to read, write, and
understand our lessons better.
Also, light is essential for us as
human beings, for animals,
and for plants.
Wonderful answer, Sabby!

Now, let us dive in more and explore the

different light sources and the importance
of light.
3. Activities and Group Activities

But before that we will be having a group

activity first. This activity will help you to
further understand the contents of our
lesson.

Now, I will group you into two groups, each

group will have a total of 15 members, - Yes, teacher.
since the total present today is 30.
Understood?

But before we move on to the activity,

there are some classroom rules that I
needed you to obey:

• Minimize all your voice and avoid

making any unnecessary noises
while doing the group activity.
• Be sure to give your utmost
cooperation to your group.
• Read the directions carefully before
answering.

Okay class, do you have any questions? - None, teacher.

Instructions:
Classify the following pictures whether they
are natural or man-made sources of light.
Write the name of the objects in the
respective table.
Natural Man-made

How did you classify the objects into - Teacher!

natural or man-made sources of light?

Yes, Cassie? - I classify them based on the

size of their light, where can I
find them, and if I can control
them or not.
Excellent Cassie!

4. Activity Proper

Now that we have done the group

activity, we will now move on to our
activity proper. I will be giving each group
a sheet of information about where their
assigned activities are.

Group 1
Direction:
Venn Diagram: Identify the differences
and similarities of the Natural and Man-
made sources of light writing them inside
their respective portion of the Venn
diagram.
Group 2
Direction: Look at the pictures and
answer the following questions.

A. Why is sunlight
Important to plant?

B. Why is traffic light important?

C. Why is a lighthouse important?

5. Post Activities

Each group will present their

activity/output in front of the class.
C. Generalization

So, can anybody recap our lesson? What

are the two different sources of light? - Teacher!

Yes, Sabby? - Teacher, Light can come from

natural and artificial sources.
Natural sources are those
found in nature or the
environment. On the other
hand, Artificial sources are
those made by people.

Excellent, Sabby!

D. Application

We’re going to do some fun activity where

we can apply what we have just learned
from this discussion.

What we’re going to do is the “Shadow

puppet”. Here’s how to do this:
Materials needed:

- Flashlight or lamp

- White screen or wall

- Cardstock or black construction paper

- Scissors

- Popsicle sticks or straws (optional)

Steps:

1. Before doing the activity, you should

know first the concept of shadow.
Shadows are formed when an object
blocks the path of light.

2. Here are some examples of different

shadow puppets or silhouettes to inspire
your creativity.

3. I will provide some cardstock or black

construction paper and scissors. You
should cut them out to various shapes of
animals, objects, or characters. Be
creative and make as many different
shapes as you like.

4. We will be using this white screen or a

plain wall as a backdrop for the shadow
puppets.

5. Of course we need to dim the lights in

our classroom.
6. Now, hold out your cut-out shapes
between the light source and the screen
wall. Class, you can experiment with
different distances and angles to create
different sizes and positions of shadows.

7. You can move your puppets and create

a story or scene using their shadows.

Did you have fun at our activity, class? - Yes, teacher!

That’s good to know!

E. Evaluation

Activity 1:
Direction: Answer the following questions in
your notebook.

1. What are the two different sources of

light?
2. In your own understanding, define the
importance of light in our everyday lives.

Activity 2:
Direction: Write N if the given object is
Natural sources of light, and M if it is Man-
made sources of light on the space
provide before the number.

1. Candle
2. Torch
3. Lava
4. Sun and stars
5. Fireflies
6. Flashlight
7. Light bulb
8. Mobile phones
9. Fluorescent light
10. Streetlights

Class, are you done? - Yes, teacher.

Okay, since all of you are already done, - Ok, teacher.
you can now pass your notebook in the
center aisle and from the center aisle, pass
it to front. I will be collecting them.

V. Assignment
Try and observe your surroundings at your
home. List some objects that you identify
as natural and man-made sources of light.

Natural Man-made

Answer the following questions:

1. How did you identify them?
