GeoFencing

11th September 2020

What is Geofencing?
The use of GPS (Global Positioning System) or RFID
(Radio Frequency Identification) technology to create
a virtual geographic boundary, enabling software to
trigger a response when a mobile device enters or
leaves a particular area. It is possible to know if the
user is inside or outside the geofence or even if he is
exiting or entering the area.

GeoFencing helps in determining geographic areas

and boundaries. It is used for GPS and RFID (Radio
Frequency Identification). The technology relies on
physical location information to set up a geofence
trigger. An alert is issued when a person or device
enters a demarcated area or boundary.

Related Terms for Context Setting
1. Geo-targeting - otherwise known as local PPC, refers to the practice of delivering different content or
advertisements to consumers based on their geographic locations. In paid search campaigns, geo-targeting is
often used to advertise to local prospects.
2. Geolocation - the process or technique of identifying the geographical location of a person or device by means
of digital information processed via the Internet.
3. Beaconing - a guiding or warning signal, as a light or fire, especially one in an elevated position. a tower or hill
used for such purposes. a lighthouse, signal buoy, etc., on a shore or at a dangerous area at sea to warn and
guide vessels.

Applications
1. Location Tracking - This can show the number of time a user is entering or exiting a particular
location that can be used to increase the Return on Investment.
2. Monitoring assets - possible to check on the frequency of a particular asset. It can be a machine
that works in a fixed location or a vehicle that is running down the road.
3. Alert Creation - an alert can be triggered when an object or person enters a geofence area, it can
also be triggered when an asset leaves a particular area where it was assigned to be located at.
4. Traffic restrictions - Also, if an area is restricted then geofencing can be used to alert the vehicle to
not enter through specific points.
5. Meeting consumer demands - Through this, they can easily understand the product-specific area
and can help in formulating marketing strategy for location based marketing. You need to
understand that you can’t sell fire extinguishers in an area that experiences floods throughout the
year. This sort of things can easily be determined by setting geofencing that can provide you with all
the information on the availability and status of products and services.

What and how is geofencing used? (Examples)

- Retailers can use

geofencing to alert local
shoppers of a great deal

- Restaurants can advertise
the day’s special to
passersby
- Ride-sharing services can
alert passengers when
there’s a driver in their
area
- The lighting/air

GeoFencing in Healthcare domain
1. Geofencing for healthcare organizations is the ability to personalize and improve patient satisfaction.
2. Through geofencing APIs, you can receive demographic information that'll enable adds to be most
targeted and effective, explains WWD. For example, you might be able to use data gathered from
other clinic visits to gauge the reason for a patient's visit. A walk-in clinic may note an uptick in visits
shortly before the first day of school, and push ads for sports physicals to the right demographic,
such as parents in their 30s and 40s. In other cases, using data from searches can help target the
right patients — someone diagnosed with a condition may conduct research on her phone, and
providers can push information about the specific condition to her device.

Purpose of Geo-fencing (1/2) in SKIIN APP

To build up connections

To chat and meet new people in the same location / to build up a community
among neighbourhood / to clock in, etc.
Purpose of Geo-fencing (2/2) in SKIIN App

To receive location-based notifications

1. Notify and remind the user what to do depending on the location ( Scenarios:)
- In the covid situation, remind the user to wear masks in enclosed space
- At the mall, remind the user to use discounts or to buy products that they listed in their notes
(eg. medicine particularly)
- If the user is passing by a location that he marked before, reminders will pop up to notify the
user to do the things in memo (eg. to see a doctor particularly)

1. Know where their family (/group members) are at ( Scenarios:)

- If the elderly people (or anybody in the group) are far away from their places where they used
to be, there will be notifications on other members’ phone
- If the parents want to ensure if their kids are doing well at safe places (needs the kid’s consent)

Q&A?

- Technical requirements of Geofencing?

Using a combination of GPS, cellular data, and also ambient Wi-Fi data combined, Geofencing can
be divided into active Geofencing and passive Geofencing and there are advantages and
disadvantages to using one over the other.

Active Geofencing: (need to open the app to detect the location)

Advantage: not affecting battery so much; Disadvantage: users can’t engage with them in passive mode
when the application is in the background, then the purpose of this function will not be achieved.

Passive Geofencing: (detect the location in the background, should be passive)

Advantage: the user does not need to have the app open; Disadvantage: potential mobile battery issues

https://academy.pulsatehq.com/geofencing-for-mobile-apps/
- How accurate could the location info be?

macro-location, there are more proximities, and should be no hardware

requirements other than SKIIN product and user’s mobile device.

(geofencing is actually built into iOS and Android by default)

- Questions from our side:

1. Should we research about geofencing with respect to COVID symptoms

tracking?

2. Are the users able to shape their own fences or the app sets up the default
geofencing for the users?

3. What’s the major difference of tracking “locations” and “geofencing”? If the

user is far away from the frequently visited locations, the notifications could still
pop up.

How location/geofencing tracking benefits the dementia group?

It has been estimated that more than 850,000 people in the UK are affected by
dementia, but less than half have been diagnosed. “Wandering” is a known problem,
and the Alzheimer’s Society website says that “one study found that 40% of people
with dementia get lost outside their home”.

OwnFone:

location in case of
emergency such as a

who has wandered.
Footprint can also be
used by first responders
as a lone working
location device.
