Solve the following

1. A car has an initial velocity of 18 m/s and an acceleration of 9.0 m/s 2. At what time and distance will the car
have before it comes to a stop?

Given: vi = 18 m/s a = 9.0 m/s2 Required: t=?

vf = 0 m/s -a = -9.0 m/s2 d=?

Derivation:
vf – vi at vf – v i
vf = vi + -at = t =
–a a –a
vf – vi
vf – vi = -at =t
–a

Solution:
2
vf – v i at
t = d = vit +
–a 2
0 m/s – 18 m/s
t = 2
- 9.0 m/ s
2 2
(- 9.0 m/ s ) (2s)
d = (18 m/s)(2s) +
2
– 18 m/s (- 9.0 m/ s )(4 s )
2 2
t = 2 d = (36 m) +
- 9.0 m/ s 2
t = 2s d = (36 m) + (- 18 m)
d = 18 m

2. A car accelerates from rest to reach a speed of 90 kph in 30 seconds. What is the acceleration in meter per
second squared(m/s2)?

Given: vi = 0 m/s t = 30 s Required: a=?

Vf = 90 kph

Conversion:
1000 m 90 000 m
90 km ( ) = 90 000 m Vf = ( )
1 km 3600 s
3600 s
1 hr ( ) = 3600 s Vf = 25 m/s
1 hr

Derivation:
vf – vi at vf – v i
vf = vi + at = a =
t t t
v
vf – vi
vf – vi = at =a
t

Solution:
vf – v i 25 m/s
a = a =
t 30 s
25 m/s – 0 m/s
a = a = 0.83 m/s2
30 s

3. An ambulance starts from rest and travels with an acceleration of 45 m/s 2 in 55 seconds. How far does the
ambulance travel at this point in time?

Given: vi = 0 m/s a = 45 m/s2 Required: d=?

t = 55 s

Solution:
d = vit + ½ at2 d = ½ (45 m/s2)(3025 s2)
d = (0 m/s)(55 s) + ½ (45 m/s2)(55 s)2 d = ½ (136 125 m)
d = 68 062.5 m

b) How much time did it take him to pitch it?
