1. SCOPE
EPC Contractor will implement, when necessary, the tagging of any new equipment /
component according to this procedure.
2. CORRELATED DOCUMENT
3. REFERENCE DOCUMENT
4. UNIT CODE
A “unit code” shall be assigned to each of the units, utilities and offsite facilities and to
the general/common areas, expressed by two numerical digits.
The assigned unit codes are in progression, the first of the units being, as a rule, the
one in which the feedstock enters the complex. The proper coding for units is shown in
the process flow diagrams. The two-digit codes shall be grouped as follows:
Utilities from 30 to 59
Offsites from 60 to 99
5. LINE NUMBERING
One alphabetical digit is used as identification code for the insulation and external
finishing type for equipment and piping as listed in the Project Standard specification
which it is specifically furnished or outside the extent of the agreed upon right of use.
All process and utilities fluids as well as solids circulating in all units are identified by
means of an alphabetical three digit code as listed in the Project Standard
Specification for P&ID Preparation 2342-AA00-JSD-0000-03.
9. EQUIPMENT TAGGING
Equipment and piping/accessory symbols are in accordance with the Project Standard
Specification for P&ID Preparation 2342-AA00-JSD-0000-03.
Electrical symbols are in accordance with the standard “IEC-60617: Graphic Symbols for
Diagrams” edited by IEC (International Electro-technical Commission).
Each type of equipment shall be identified by means of alphabetical digits such as “P” for
pumps, “E” for heat-exchangers, “TR” for electrical power transformers and so on.
The drivers shall be identified with the same code as the driven equipment, with the
addition of a suffix code letter for the type (say “M” for electrical motor, “T” for turbine,
and so on).
The codes to be used by EPC Contractor for electrical component identification are listed
in the “Electrical Equipment list ” 2342-AA00-NM 1600-02.
The codes to be used by EPC Contractor for equipment identification are listed in the
“Process Equipment Identification Code List” (see Attachment N°1).
9.1. Equipment
XX – NN – KYY A/B
where:
Example:
10 – P – 103 B
Process Unit N° 10
Pump
rd
3 pump of the Section 1 in the Process Unit 10
Spare (of twin or more pieces)
Drivers shall be identified by the same code as the driven equipment, with the addition
of a prefix letter for type (M = Motor, etc.), e.g.:
10 – MP – 103 B
rd
meaning the electric motor of the 3 spare pump of the Section 1 in the Unit 10.
which it is specifically furnished or outside the extent of the agreed upon right of use.
10. INSTRUMENTATION
The instrumentation numbering shall follow the rules as defined in the document
“General Design Rule for Instrument Numbering” – 2342-AA00-JSD-1501-01.
However, as a general principle, the instrument tagging utilizes a group of
alphanumerical characters which unequivocally identifies any instrument in the plant as
follows:
XX – ZNN(NN) - YYYY S
where:
XX indicates the code of the unit the instrument belongs to (as per para 5).
Z identifies the type of measurement/control loop (F=flow;
T=temperature, etc.)
NN(NN) is the functional instrument code as per ISA-S5-1
YYYY is the sequential number for the same type of instrument in the same
unit
S is the sub-index (i.e. “A”, “B”, etc.), if needed.
Example:
04 - TIC - 0010
Unit code (Process Unit N° 04)
Instrument identification as per ISA-S5-1
th
10 instrument of Unit 04
The Process Interface Buildings of the plant are specifically identified by means of a
group of alphanumerical characters as follows:
AA – PIB – XX
where:

11.1. Buildings
BAA – XX
where:

12.2. Cables (with exception of lighting, electrical heat tracing and cathodic protection
ones)
Starting from the end, the ITEM is made up of two parts: a “prefix” and a “name”,
separated by the dot “.”.
The “name” is the tag of the connected electrical user (a pump, a local control station,
a transformer, etc.) or a word that identifies the function of the cable.
Example: considering a pump motor (tag 12-MP-001A) not requiring parallel power
cables and additional control, the power, control and interconnecting cables relevant to
the motor 12-MP-001A are:
Example: if the power cables of the pump motor tagged 12-MP-001A were two in
parallel:
The “serial” notification is a serial number from 1 to 9 used to identify more than one
cable belonging to the same purpose. This number can be introduced, as said, if there
are more than one cables having the described characteristics otherwise the cable tag
remains without “serial” notification.
Example: if there is more than one control cable for the pump motor tagged 12-MP-
001A:
12.3.2. Junction boxes (with exception of lighting, electrical heat tracing and cathodic
protection ones)
Junction boxes will be identified with an item composed by tag of relevant motor or
controlled device followed by “…/JB”.
