1. Scope.
Purpose of this report is the presentation to SCOP of the water sewer preliminary
arrangement developed by TPIT on the basis of the conceptual design and guidelines
discussed and agreed during previous meeting on the matter (see report 2342-AA00-
ML-256 rev 0 and MOM TPIT-SCOP 001 para.5)
This report illustrates the design basis and assumptions intended for use in the sewers
network development of Karbala Refinery.
Being this report started and issued in an early phase of the project, its attachments
may be not consistent with the current revision of the Plot Plan.
Findings and results of studies included in this report have been used in project FEED
development of U/G network major layouts, after sharing and concurrence of SCOP
engineers.
EPC Contractor shall develop the U/G network taking into consideration the guidelines
highlighted in this report.

2. Sewers systems overview.

In the frame of Refinery drainage system, as described in 2342-AA00-JSD-1400-01 –
General Design Rules for Underground systems – the studies included in this report
cover specifically:
1. Oily water sewer system
2. White sewer system (i.e. non contaminated water sewer system)

3. Oily water system

The system collects the rain or fire water that can be polluted by extraneous product
(i.e. hydrocarbons, oil etc) from:
1. Process and utilities units paved areas
2. Tanks dike space
3. Buildings roof drainage in process / utilities units
4. Purges and open drains from equipment in process / utilities areas
The collected potential contaminated water has to be transferred to WWT (Waste
Water Treatment area) for treatment.

The transfer ideal solution, in terms of reliability and cost, is represented by gravity
sewer design. However, due to long transfer distances involved in the Refinery
which it is specifically furnished or outside the extent of the agreed upon right of use.

arrangement, the sewer gravity design cannot be applied for all Refinery areas in order
to avoid impractical deeper collection pond.

The OWS (Oily Sewer System) general arrangement has been developed maximizing,
as much as possible, the gravity transfer, reducing at minimum the intermediate
collection ponds and relevant lifting stations. The following base parameters have been
considered:
 Maximum depth of collection ponds = 6 mt approx. below grade
 Sewers lines slopes = 0,2 % (assuming plastic piping installation – PVC, GRP etc –
having roughness coefficient = 0,009)
 Suitable free area for intermediate collection pond / lifting station
 Minimum sewer pipe depth = 1,5 mt to permit U/G cable crossing

 Proper network layout avoiding deep sleeper way crossing impacting on sewer piping
elevation.

Refinery areas blocks have been singularly identified and sewer piping routing has
been evaluated in terms of routing distances to collection pond and resulting elevation
at point of discharge.

ATT 1 – U/G network blocks key plan – shows the identified drainage blocks areas.
Each block has been estimated and subdivided in:
 Paved oily area
 Paved non contaminated rain water area
 Roads surface
 Non paved (gravelled) area
The relevant figures, as reported in tables A and B, are indicative at the present status
of the project. They shall be checked/updated after development completion of units
detail plot plans and relevant paved areas definition.

Table “A” – Oily sewer layout – reports, in front of each identified block:
 The ground elevation at sewer network starting
 The drainage destination pond
 The ground elevation of the destination pond
 The sewer line length estimate
 The delta elevation of the sewer line, from starting up to discharge, due to the
required slope (0,2%)
 The relative elevation of discharge sewer line in respect to the ground in which the
receiving pond is located
 The surface to be drained and the total rain water amount to be drained in 24 hr
(estimated at the extreme maximum recorded 24 hr rainfall according to the 1950 –
1980 Baghdad meteo station collection = 73 mm/day – Comparing, in the same data
collection, the recorded monthly rainfall with the extreme recorded one, the
repetition in two consecutive days of the extreme rainfall can be excluded)
 Estimate of the pond required volume, including the Fire Water also
Regarding the dimension of the accumulation ponds, The following has been
considered:
Ponds volume shall be calculated to contain rainfall height of 73 mm. max.
which it is specifically furnished or outside the extent of the agreed upon right of use.

Cause of high hydraulic retention time of the subject ponds, potential growth of
biological sludge can be predicted: it is therefore recommended to not exceed 1, 2 m of
water depth, in order to reduce growth of anaerobic bacteria (Bio-sludge)
The above criteria implies high area occupancies. Therefore, taking into account:
 the very low frequency of significant recorded rainfall height in the project area (the
worst case of 73mm:once in 35 years);
 significant save of area reserved to the accumulation ponds;

each pond shall be designed for a max water depth of 2 m (which will be reached
only in case of 73 mm rainfall) and sized not to exceed the water depth of 1,2
meter for a rainfall <= 40 mm. Refer also to fig.1.

4. White water collection system

The system handles non polluted water. In particular:
 Runoff from roads, car parking, building roof (outside of process and utilities
areas)
 Paved areas in process/utilities units not subject to pollution (by
hydrocarbons, oils etc.)
 Not contaminated process water effluent (i.e. wash down of non oily
equipment in process and utility areas, non contaminated blow down and
drains, etc,)
Mentioned rain water drains are collected in dedicated ponds and transmitted to
WWT.

The inclusion in the collection system of the drainage of non paved (graveled) areas,
in addition to that mentioned before, should be decided considering the following:

a. Evaluation of undesirable run off (and consequent flooding) impairing the

functionality of the Refinery working areas or roads.
b. Persistence of water pool after heavy rain in such areas.

As far as previous point a is concerned, any flooding occurrence can be excluded. As

a matter of fact, all the paved areas and roads are built at higher elevation in respect
to graveled ones. It can be assumed that being the elevation of paved areas 250 mm
higher than the non paved ones, any heavy rain, even equal or greater than the
extreme recorded (73 mm) will be confined in the area itself.

As far as point b is concerned, considering:

 rainfall data collection – Karbala meteo station years 1981 – 1986
 Soil characteristics according to “Geotechnical and geophysical investigation for
Karbala Refinery Project”
The persistence of confined rain water pool in the non paved areas can be evaluated
of minor magnitude.
Indicative evaluation and considerations are included in appendix 1

Considering the above, the non contaminated water network layout is shown in ATT 3.
In mentioned layout, only the paved areas (in non oily zones) and roads are supposed
which it is specifically furnished or outside the extent of the agreed upon right of use.

to be drained and water is collected in dedicated receiving ponds. Rain water in

confined graveled areas is not collected in the system.

Table B has been worked showing, for each identified block:

 The destination collection pond
 The paved surface relevant to oily zones
 The graveled surface
 The paved surface relevant to non oily zones
 The roads surface
 The total 24 hr rainfall volume in graveled areas. Calculated volume equals the total
volume multiplied by the run off coefficient (remaining quantity is considered infiltrated
in the soil)

 The total rainfall volume for roads and non oil paved surfaces, accounted as above
but assuming runoff coefficient equal to one.
 Ponds required volumes. They have been estimated, as for the oily water collection
ponds, considering a maximum depth of accumulated water of 1,2 meters in order to
avoid the growth of anaerobic bacteria which may result in the formation of anaerobic
biological sludge.
Appling the above requirement with the highest rainfall of 73mm in 24hours would
imply an unpractical dimensioning of the ponds in terms of required area within the
refinery.
Therefore, taking into account:

 the very low frequency of important precipitations recorded in the project area (the
worst case of 73mm in 24hours: one time over 35 years);
 the need of limiting the area occupied by the accumulation ponds;

each pond shall be designed for a max water depth of 2 m (which will be reached
only in case of 73 mm rainfall) and sized not to exceed the water depth of 1,2
meter for a rainfall <= 40 mm.

Removal of potential formation of biological sludge need to be carried out in the

exceptional cases of precipitations exceeding 40mm in 24hours, after accumulation
ponds emptying.

In table B the following cases have been computed:

 First case considering collected the graveled areas also, to give the order of
magnitude of the impacts relevant to graveled area water collection.
 Second case excluding the graveled areas

The sizing of the ponds is given as additional length to the oily water ponds as
evaluated in Table A.

(The case with drained graveled areas has been included to permit a roughly
evaluation of the relevant impact in Ponds sizing)
which it is specifically furnished or outside the extent of the agreed upon right of use.

APPENDIX 1

Raining water pool persistence evaluation

Evaluation of the persistence of water pool in graveled areas, after rain, is discussed in the
following paragraph. The evaluation is conducted on statistical basis and its findings have to be
interpreted as “probable event”, and not as absolute quantitative calculation result.

Evaluation has been carried out considering the Karbala meteo collection for years 1981 – 1986
(included in this appendix).
Mentioned five years weather data collection has been considered well representative of the
average rainfall conditions, normally expectable in the area. It is particularly suitable for the scope
being the evaporation rate also reported.

The characteristics of the soil have been considered according to soil survey carried out by SCOP
- “Geotechnical and Geophysical investigation for Karbala Refinery”.
The characteristics of the Refinery soil, as investigated, are reported in the mentioned survey,
giving a very low permeability value for the ground.

The first table summarizes the rain water pool persistence considering:
 The lower recorded evaporation rate of 61.4 mm/month in the month of January 1982
 The maximum rainfall rate of 42.1 mm /month in the period, falling in the same January 1982
month, rounded to 46 mm in the calculations.
 Four consecutive days of raining for a total of 44 mm rain, three days interval and additional two
days for 2 mm total rain
 The permeability of the ground equal to 0.0001 mm/sec, according to soil investigation data.

The second table summarizes the rain water pool persistence considering:
 The recorded evaporation rate of 389.4 mm/month in the month of May 1984
 The rainfall rate of 24.9 mm /month in the period, falling in the same May 1982 month, rounded
to 35 mm in the calculations.
 Two consecutive raining days
 The permeability of the ground equal to 0.0001 mm/sec, according to soil investigation data.
which it is specifically furnished or outside the extent of the agreed upon right of use.

During month of January, the worst period, it can be assumed that the persistence of the water
pool is limited in time and quantity. It will be absorbed by soil or evaporate totally in less than two
month after raining, maintaining its level very low. The situation during the month of May is much
better, having the water pool fully disappeared the day after the raining.

It is also highlighted that, in the actual situation, being the gravel thickness 100 mm approx, the
water pool will be confined below the gravel layer.
