BATELCO-HAMALA CP SURVEY REPORT REV 0 30/10/2019

Dear Sirs

Newtech International W.L.L have conducted a survey of the CP system for

BATELCO, Hamala and results and conclusion are given on a structure by structure
basis below:

Inspection of a cathodically protected system are necessary to ensure that protection

of the structure is in accordance with applicable criteria, and that each part of the
cathodic protection system is operating satisfactorily and if changes are noted, then
action is taken to return the system to a protection conditions

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
From Newtech understanding there are Four Cathodic Protection systems operating
at BATELCO, Hamala

1. Underground Diesel tank- ICCP -01 Transformer rectifier

2. Aboveground Domestic tank- Sacrificial Anodes
3. Aboveground Fire hydrant tank- Sacrificial Anodes
4. Aboveground Sprinkler tank- Sacrificial Anodes

UNDERGROUND DIESEL TANK
TRANSFORMER RECTIFIER

Underground Diesel ground storage tank is provided with external cathodic protection
systems within the Batelco, Hamala facility.
System is monitored using portable Copper sulfate electrode and powered via air-cooled
rectifiers located in the electrical control room. The rectifiers are set to operate in constant
current mode.

OVERALL CONCLUSIONS:

The major areas of concern are as under.

We didn’t receive Design document, CP drawings as well as commissioning report to

establish the type, number of anodes and protection criteria applied to the CP systems while
commissioning. Standard criteria are mentioned below:

- A negative potential of at least -850mV w.r.t a saturated copper-copper sulphate electrode

(CSE). This equates to -780mV for a silver-silver chloride electrode (Ag/AgCl) and +250mV
for a high purity zinc electrode (Zn)

- A minimum 100mV of cathodic polarization. The formation or decay of polarization can be

used to satisfy this criterion.

Underground Diesel Storage Tank:

Findings:

This section is having Impressed Current cathodic protection system protecting the
Underground Diesel storage tank

Transformer Rectifier output was very low. We adjusted the TR output as required.

Off Potential measured above the tank are above -850 mV wrt portable copper sulphate
portable reference electrode which shows the tank is cathodically protected. (Refer the result
sheet)

Recommendations:

We consider that the tank is protected and no additional work is required. A typical shift in
potential of 300mV (negative) is accepted as the industry standard required to provide
cathodic protection to carbon steel. The results clearly demonstrate a negative potential shift
far in excess of this value.

Transformer Rectifier output readings to be noted every week.

Regular monitoring and maintenance should continue.

Above ground Water tanks :

Findings:

This section is having sacrificial cathodic protection system protecting three above ground
Water tanks.

On Potentials measured at Domestic tank manholes are below -850 mV wrt silver chloride
portable reference electrode which shows the tanks are not cathodically protected. (Refer the
result sheet)

On Potentials measured at Fire Hydrant tank manholes are above -850 mV wrt silver chloride
portable reference electrode which shows the tanks are not cathodically protected. (Refer the
result sheet)

On Potentials measured at Sprinkler tank manholes are above -850 mV wrt silver chloride
portable reference electrode which shows the tanks are not cathodically protected. (Refer the
result sheet)

Roof-external coating for all the three tanks has been removed.

Recommendations:

It seems the sacrificial anodes for domestic tank are consumed/not delivering current ;we
recommend an inspection of the internal sections of the domestic water tank immediately to
check the dimensions of the sacrificial anodes and if required all the CP anodes to be
replaced with new anodes to avoid further corrosion of the tank internals.

Though Potential for fire hydrant and sprinkler tank internals are above -850 mv; we
would recommend an inspection of the anodes and tank internal sections.

It is anticipated that some degree corrosion will be observed and should be repaired before
replacing the anodes.

Tank roof external for all the three tanks to be repainted.
