5.2 Ground improvement design

5.2.1 Main Compaction Design

As the fill height across the different areas varies from 2.0 m to around 12.0 m as
per contract drawings provided. Dynamic compaction will proceed according to the
backfill thickness and ground improvement design result as below table 5.2-1 &
table 5.2-2 shown.

method trail test fail, the Dynamic Compaction (DC) method will be used for 2m fill
height and 4m fill height ground improvement.

5.2.2 Ironing design

Craters are formed at the drop points after the main compaction. These craters
would need to be filled by performing an ironing pass that would compact the
surficial materials. For the ironing pass, the following is proposed:

 Use Rapid Impact Compaction (RIC) for compaction of surface material

5.3 Trial Compaction

5.3.1 Trial Test Arrangement

CHEC will select an area which not less than 50m×50m to do the trial compaction to
verify the design based on the results of the trials.

Based on the above, the following trial patterns are proposed to be undertaken on
site to check the design for the improvement of the rockfill:

a) Setting Out the dynamic compaction points.

b) Position the dynamic compaction rig and place the hammer at the impact point.

c) Raise the hammer to design height and release the hook to allow the hammer
to fall down free.

d) Repeat procedure c) and d) to finish designed drops of compaction at one point.

e) Repeat procedure step c) to step e) to complete phase1&2

(2) Rapid Impact Compaction (RIC)

The following steps illustrate the process for RIC:

a) Set out of compaction points;

b) The crane is in position and the hammer is in position to the compaction point.

c) Survey the top level of the hammer before compaction.

d) Perform compaction works. The number of drops and the drop height shall follow
design requirement. Top level of the rammer of each drop will be record during test
compaction.

e) Backfilling of craters using excavated material to ground level

f) Repeat step b to step e.

5.4 Verification of trial compaction

Following ground improvement, tests must be undertaken in the fill to assess the
degree of compaction achieved.

As per the ground improvement design, following tests are proposed to verify the
trial compaction works.

1) Borehole with SPTs

Boreholes to be drilled post ground improvement across the site area in a grid with
disturbed samples for checking the grading of the placed fill material and fine
contents with in-situ Standard Penetration Test (SPT) at every 1 m within the
borehole within the full thickness of fill in accordance with ASTM D1586 (or similar).

2) Field Density Test

Large-scale field density tests in accordance with ASTM D4914 or Nuclear field
density test in accordance with ASTM D6938 will be used to assess the achieved
compaction level of the rockfill.

3) Zone Load Test

The ZLT should generally be carried out and reported in accordance with the ICE
Specification for Ground Improvement, 1987. The ZLT shall load a rigid square or
circular base of 3 m by 3 m dimension or 3 m diameter, in equal increments to 200%
of the design bearing pressure of 150 kPa. Each increment shall be applied for a
minimum of 1 hour with the final increments being left for a minimum of twelve (12)
hours. Settlements shall be recorded at the mid-point of each edge of the rigid base.
Upon completion of the test the rigid base shall be unloaded in equal decrements
and the recovery recorded.
