PROBLEM SOLVING
Situation 1. The horizontal 30-cm diameter pipeline with friction factor equal to 0.025 has a leak. Upstream from the
leak, two gages 600m apart show a pressure difference of 140kPa. Downstream from the leak two gages 600m
apart shows a pressure difference of 126kPa.
a.) What is the discharge in the inlet?
b.) What is the discharge in the outlet?
c.) How much water, in liters/sec, is being lost from the pipe?

Situation 2. A certain liquid flows in a smooth pipe with the following specifications:
Length of pipe=20m, Re=1800, HL=30m and D=10mm.
a.) What is the friction factor?
b.) What is the value of the kinematic viscosity of the liquid in m2/s?
c.) What is the discharge in liters/min?

Situation 3. Water flows in a 400-mm diameter pipe at the rate of 600 lit/sec. The pipe has a length of 60m.
a.) Compute the headloss with f=0.028.
b.) Compute the headloss with C1=92.
c.) Compute the headloss with n=0.013.

Situation 4. A turbine is installed between reservoirs A and B whose difference in water surface elevation is 140m.
The pipe connecting the reservoir has a diameter of 250mm and is 180m long. The flow of water is 180L/s. Use
Hazen William’s Constant C1=100.
a.) Determine the headloss in the pipe due to friction.
b.) What is the head extracted by the turbine?
c.) What is the power generated by the turbine assuming 90% efficiency?

Situation 5. Water flows from point 1 to point 2 with the following conditions: Discharge= 280L/s, D=300mm, and
Difference in elevation=360m. P2-P1=80kPa when the valve is close while P1-P2=170kPa when the valve is opened.
a.) What is the elevation of point 1?
b.) What is the headloss between points 1 and 2 when the valve is opened?
c.) What is the length of the pipe from points 1 and 2 assuming f=0.03.
