Homework 3
Problem 1
• A rectangular water tank is divided by a
partition into two chambers as shown
in the figure. In the bottom of the
partition is a round, sharp-edged orifice
with a diameter of 150 mm. The
coefficient of discharge for the orifice is
0.62. at a certain instant, the water
level in chamber B is 2.5 m higher than
it is in chamber A. How long will it take
for the water surfaces in the two
chambers to be at the same level?
Problem 2
• How long does it take to
raise the water surface of
the figure by 1m? The left
hand surface is a large
reservoir of constant water-
surface elevation.
Problem 3
• A. Determine the time required to raise the right hand
surface if the figure by 0.9m
• B. Determine the volume of water that flows towards 2.1m

the right hand surface

• C. How long will the water level on both tanks be on
the same level
• D. What is the instantaneous discharge at the orifice
Problem 4
• Water flows at a rate of 0.02 m3/s from a reservoir A to reservoir B
through three concrete pipes connected in a series as shown in the
figure. Find the difference in water-surface elevation in the reservoirs.
Neglect minor losses. Use n = 0.012
Problem 5
• Figure shows a looping pipe system. Pressure heads at points A and E
are 70m and 46m respectively. Compute the flow rate of water
through each branch of the loop. Assume C=120 for all pipes
Problem 6
• A two branch commercial steel pipe system delivers 0.42 m3/s of
water. The pressure at B is 22kPa gage. What is the pressure at A?
Neglect minor losses. Use f=0.015
Problem 7
Pipelines 1, 2 and 3 are connected with parallel to each
other. The three pipes carries a combined discharge of 0.86
m3/s. Assuming f = 0.02 for all pipes, compute the discharge
in each pipe.

1 600 450
2 800 400
3 700 500
Problem 8
• A pipe network consists of 4 pipelines connected as shown. If the rate
of flow from A to B is 10 liters/sec and assuming f = 0.02 for all pipes,
compute the following: Pipe Length (m) Diameter

• Total headloss from A to D. 2 2200 300
3 3200 200
4 2800 400
Problem 9

pipes and assume that the rate of flow for each network is 0.085
m3/s. (a) Calculate the total headloss of system A. (b) Calculate the
discharge of line 2 of system B. (c) Which of the system has the
greater capacity ( Hiint : the one with the lowest headloss has the
greatest capacity)
Problem 10
• Water is being discharged from a
reservoir through a turbine as
shown. C = 120 for all pipes, Rate
of flow is 0.28 cu.m/s. (a)

the pipe. (b) Determine the energy
extracted by the turbine to
generate 56 kW of power. (c)

water surface in the reservoir that
would be required in order for the
turbine to generate 56 kW of
power.
