a medical examination to test your general state
of health

the reason why something, especially something bad,
happens

Dialog (4 mins)
Role-play the dialog with your teacher twice, and learn the highlighted expressions by heart.

Mike: Hi, Mr. Smith. I’m Doctor Mike. Why are you here today?
Mr. Smith: I found it would be a good idea to get a medical check-up.
Mike: Let me check. Your eyes and ears look fine. Take a breath, please. Do you smoke, Mr. Smith?
Mr. Smith: Yes, I just can’t quit smoking.
Mike: Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer (肺癌) and heart disease. We have some
medicine that might help. I will give you more information before you leave.
Mr. Smith: Thanks, doctor. I will try to get a check-up at least once a year.
Mike: You’re welcome.
TI: Take turns to play both characters. Emphasize and repeat the highlighted expressions.
