Statement of Purpose

I, Upkar Singh Kahllon, based in Asansol, West Bengal, India. I completed Grade 10 in 2013
and Grade 12 in 2015 in science stream from ICSE board. Following the mundane pathway,
that most of students take in India, post completion of higher secondary, I opted for
Bachelor’s program in Engineering with specialisation in Automobile Engineering. I
completed my Bachelor’s degree in 2020 from Acharya Institute of Technology (affiliated to
Visvesvaraya Technological University), Karnataka, India. My Bachelor’s degree not only
helped me to gain technical knowledge but there were certain subjects like, Manufacturing
Process, Management and Entrepreneurship and Total Quality Management, which
intrigued me more. Also, because of my active interest in extra-curricular activities, I was
part of event management teams. This made me realise my inclination towards
management field.
While pursuing my Bachelor’s degree, I worked part-time, with Varun Enterprises as an
Assistant Product In-charge for a short span. Whilst working on their brand Sprinkle Spices,
helped me build my foundation and I was able to develop some vital skills such as team
coordination, time management, operations along with working under a strict timeline for a
project, etc. Further, my experience helped me to get a full-time job, right after completion
of bachelor’s degree. I started working with R. S. Enterprise as a Sales Executive in
September 2019. My role gave me an opportunity to learn about marketing strategies and
client relationships. Post working in this role for about 2 years, I switched to a renowned
education tech company called BYJU’s. I was employed as a Business Development trainee
and later moved up the ladder to be a Pre-Sales Associate. This promotion benefited me
greatly in improving my skills since I dealt with diversed age group of people which included
students, parents and professionals who were keen to continue their learning journey. Also,
working at BYJU’s triggered me to analyze few things such as-

- Where my career is headed, what do I want to do going forward?

- Do I need to upgrade my skill set to advance my career?

After contemplating, the answer was Project Management, a domain where my academic
background in engineering, professional experience in sales, marketing, and people skills will
allow me to build a strong career. A Project Management course would enable me to plan
and manage a project to successfully complete its listed goals and deliverables. It involves
identifying and managing risks, careful resource management, smart budgeting, and clear
communication across multiple teams. Project Management Professionals need a wide
range of skills such as technical awareness, people management and business management
expertise, and many more. I firmly believe that pursing Project Management program
offered by Conestoga College will aid me with all the required skills and knowledge to build
my career in this field.
The reason I chose to study abroad because it will be an amazing opportunity for me to gain
exposure and experience diverse cultures. This would help me in developing my personality
and keep me up to date with latest trends and technologies across the globe. With a world-
renowned education system, Canada is one of the hubs for imparting education. Its diverse
culture and its student friendly society make it an ideal study destination for international
students like me. Not only does Canada offer world class education but it does so at a
relatively affordable cost, academically and in terms of living expenses unlike US or other
European countries.

After extensive research I came across Project Management program offered by Conestoga
College. This program seems to have wonderfully encapsulated the necessary modules into
1 year course with focus on practical application of principles which is especially highlighted
by the ‘Applied Project’ modules that is part of level two of the program. Though the biggest
reason I chose Conestoga College, is the curriculum of the Project Management program,
but upon research, I found that it’s one of oldest institutes in Canada. It was established in
1967 and spread across multiple campuses in the Ontario region. Conestoga is a leader in
polytechnic education and amongst the fastest growing colleges in the province. Conestoga
College offers state of the art facilities, such as labs equipped with latest technology,
focusing on technology-enhanced learning and also provide students with career advice
throughout their learning journey.

After completion of my course, I intend to come back to India. As India is one of the fastest
growing economies with a great demand for professions like Project Co-ordinator, Technical
Project Manager, Project Team Leader, Project Control Officer, Project Administrator, etc. I
believe studying Project Management program offered by Conestoga College will help me
improve my interpersonal and leadership skills. Also, this program will equip me with key
skills like managing scope, cost, schedule and quality of projects, time management while
handling multiple projects at a time, cost management, resourceful use of technology tools,
enhancing external and internal communication by promoting effective operational
methods. With the acquired expertise and experience, I will be able to grow up on the
corporate ladder to become a part of senior management. A Canadian degree and
international exposure will prepare me for the challenges that I will encounter.

With regards to my financial background, my parents would be supporting me with the

required amount of tuition and living expenses in Canada. I have paid the complete one year
tuition fees of C$ 18185 to my institution. I have maintained a GIC account of C$ 10000
which will contribute towards my living expenses during my stay in Canada.

I understand the kind of dedication and hard work required to successfully complete my
desired course at Conestoga College and I assure you of my commitment towards the same.
I request you to consider my application favourably and offer me the opportunity to prove
my abilities.
