Sub: Identification/ Numbering of wheels.

Following instructions for identification/ numbering of wagon wheels are proposed:

1. Each wagon has two sides, identified as left side and right side.

2. The right side is the side where DV is located and this side is marked with an
arrow with traffic red color at top portion of the center line of the wagon for easy
identification of the right side.

3. The right side (D.V. side) is represented by the number ‘2’ and the left side (non-
D.V. side) is represented by the number ‘1’ in EPC area of RFID tag.

4. Further, while facing the right side the right hand side end is known as ‘X’ end of
the wagon and the left hand side of the wagon is known as ‘Y’ end of the wagon.

5. The RFID tags are fitted at ‘Y’ end on Right side and at ‘X’ end on Left side of the
wagon.

6. Considering the above, following nomenclature scheme is proposed for

identification/ numbering of wheels in wagon –
a) The numbering should be started from ‘X’ End facing the Right side of the
wagon.
b) The right side of the wheel is prefixed by word ‘R’ and the left side of the
wheel are prefixed by word ‘L’.
c) Accordingly, the right hand side (DV side) of the wheel shall be identified as
R1, R2, R3 & R4 and the left side (Non- DV side) of the wheel shall be
identified as L1, L2, L3 & L4.
d) A schematic diagram showing the above nomenclature is enclosed herewith.
If approved, necessary instruction to Zonal Railways may be issued.
