I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of the salient features of the arts of Min-
danao by showing the relationship of the elements of art and processes the diverse
cultural communities in the country.
B. Performance Standard: The learner exhibits completed artworks for appreciation and critiquing.

C. Learning Competencies: Identifies characteristics of arts and crafts in specific areas in Mindanao (
e.g., maritime vessel [balanghay] from Butuan, vinta from Zamboanga; Marana-
o's malong, brasswares, okir, panolong, torogan, and sarimanok; Yakan's fabric
and face makeup and body ornamentation; T'boli's tinalak and accessories; Tawi
tawi's Pangalaydance, etc. (AZEL-Illa-2)

Objectives
a. Identify the different characteristics of art and crafts in specific areas in Mindanao (e.g.
maritime vessel [balanghay] from Butuan; vinta from Zamboanga; malong, brasswares, okir,
panolong, torogan, and sarimanok of the Maranao; fabric, face makeup, and body
ornamentation of the Yakan; tinalak and accessories of the T'boli; pangalay from Tawi-tawi).

C. Abstraction
- Our topic for today is about Arts
and Crafts of Mindanao: Crafts,
Accessories, and Body Ornaments.
- First, let us have SARIMANOK

Sarimanok
is a legendary bird of the Maranao. It comes
from the word “sari” meaning cloth or
garment and “manok” for chicken. It is said
to be a symbol of good fortune.

Okir
Refers to traditional and unique carving and
prominent to any design among the Moro
ethno-linguistic communities.

The name comes from an old Malayan


word which means carve or “ukit” in
Filipino.

A new pattern now known as the okir motif


has evolved from the Indian stylized bird-
like and naga themes and the Islamic
tradition of using flowing flowers, vines,
and geometric patterns as well as local
artisan styles.
Face Make Up and Body Ornaments
A distinct form of visual arts of the Yakan
is the facial make –up applied on brides and
grooms. After applying a foundation of
white powder, dots and lines are painted in
various patterns on the faces, creating the
effect of formal and elaborate masks which
match the ornate costumes of the couple.

The bride and groom wears different


accessories.

Male
• Pis-hand-woven head cloth; worn as
symbolic protection from spears or knives.
• Kandit- 15-m belt or sash made of gilim
(red cloth)
• Shirts that are believed to be bullet proof
with Arabic script designs
prepared by imams and hadjis.

• Saruk- hat worn to add elegance.

Ornaments
• Crocodile tooth necklace for fortune
• Triangular amulets with symbols
wrapped in black cloth(anting-anting)
against bullets

• Snake bone belts to guard from pain.

• Maniktegiyas- a necklace or bracelet of


beads from dried fruit seeds to protect
from illness caused by evil spirits.

• Maniksembulan- necklace or bracelets


made of a bamboo stems cut into short
pieces: serves as added protection.
Functional articles:
• Pegupaan-bamboo container for chewing
betel nut.

• Lutuan- a small bronze box with


engravings carried at the waist.

T’boli Accessories:
1. Hilot –is a heavy brass belt worn by
womenduring festivals.

2. Suwaltimimotis – a wooden comb with


colored glass beads hanging from
it,worn toward the back of the head.

Brass Making-Kulintang
The kulintang is a musical instrument com-
posed of eight different-sized brass gongs
laid upon a wooden rack.

D. Application
ACTIVITY:
“Sarimanok Paper Layering Art”

Materials:
• Crayons
• White folder
• Pair of scissors
• White Glue

Procedures:
1. The class will be devided into three (3)
groups. Each group will select a leader
to lead the group activity.
2. You will be given 15 minutes to finish
your work.
3. Color all the sarimanok images using
crayons. Use same colors you used on
the identical areas.
4. Cut out all three images.
5. Apply thin coat of white glue on top of
the images then let it sit for a while
6. until it turns to clear solid.
7. Glue sarimanok image 3 on top of
image 2 on top of image 1. Use hot glue
to stick them together but leave a small
gap between images. Leave the glue to
cool down without flattering it. This
will add a shadow effect on your
artwork.
8. Each group will present their work in
the class, describing their work.
9. The sequence of work presentation
should be, the group 1 will be the first
presenter, followed by the group 2, and
group 3 will be the last.

Creativity (color/design) 30%
Quality of work (good looking) 30%
Delivery (how work presented in the 20%
class)
Time Management (Time consumed) 10%
Unity (All members must cooperate) 10%
