At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
a. identify the elements of the reading material ‘The Tale of Tonyo the Brave’ by Maria Aleah
Taboclaon;
b. promote the love for reading;
c. engage in reading comprehension through activities and journal writing.
Subject Matter: National Reading Program; Philippine Mythological Creatures
Materials: PowerPoint presentation, Worksheets, Manila Paper; Speaker, Laptop

A. Pre-Reading (First Period)
a. The teacher will ask the students if they are familiar with the series ‘Pedro Penduko’ by
showing pictures.
b. Students will sing the song, ‘Bitiw’ by Spongecola.
Mythological Creature Word Association
c. The teacher will present series of emojis and the students shall identify the mythological
creature.
d. Teacher asks the question, “What creature is most popular?”
e. The author of the story and her background will be introduced.
f. The teacher will set the mood of the class in preparation for the reading activity through a
meditation activity.

B. During Reading (Second Period)
a. Unlocking Vocabularies: Students will read the words and its definition.
 boisterous- adj. of a person, event, or behavior) noisy, energetic,
and cheerful; rowdy.
 spry-adj. a person who is active or lively
 supernatural- n. an event attributed to some force beyond scientific understanding
or the laws of nature
 undisputed- adj. not challenged or questioned
 embossed-adj. object decorated with a design that stands out in relief

 prowls- v. a person or an animal that moves around restlessly and stealthily
especially in search of a prey
b. The teacher will ask these motivation questions: “Are you afraid of the dark? What are
the things you are afraid of in the dark? In this story, we will witness the bravery of a
young boy who is not afraid of the dark and the creatures beyond them”
c. The teacher will present the story, ‘The Tale of Tonyo the Brave’ by Maria Aleah
Taboclaon.
d. Students will take turns in reading aloud the story.
e. The teacher will ask leading questions and will let students predict what happens next in
the story.

C. Post Reading (Third Period)


a. The teacher will ask questions to students and identify the basic elements of the story
 What is the title of the story? Who is the author?
 Who is the main character in ‘The Tale of Tonyo the Brave’?
 Where does the story take place?
 What point of view is employed in the story?
 Can you describe Tonyo’s character traits based on the narrative?
 What were the challenges Tonyo faced throughout the story?
 How did Tonyo overcome the challenges?
 What do you think the author is trying to convey through Tonyo’s character and
his bravery?
b. Each group will create a short drama skit of their favorite part of the drama using the
rubric.

(Fourth Period)
c. Bravery Reflection – Ask students to write in their journal notebook a time when they
felt brave just like Tonyo.
Directions: In your journal notebook, write a reflection about the time when you felt
brave just like Tonyo. You can share and provide your experiences in your journal
notebooks. Use this rubric as your guide.
