Warm Up

Display pictures or video references of different kitchen tools and equipment on the whiteboard. Ask
the students to identify as many tools and equipment as they can in 2 minutes. Discuss their answers
as a class.

Main Teaching

1. Explain the importance of using the right tools and equipment in the kitchen.
2. Define and discuss key vocabulary (tools, equipment, paraphernalia, utensils, appliances, measuring
tools, kitchenware, cookware).
3. Present a list of common kitchen tools and equipment. Show pictures and describe each item,
highlighting its purpose and use in cooking.
4. Demonstrate the correct use of some kitchen tools and equipment (e.g., peeler, grater, chopping
board, saucepan, oven).
5. Discuss the importance of measuring accurately in cooking and introduce common measuring tools
(e.g., measuring cups, spoons, weighing scales). Demonstrate how to use each tool correctly.

Plenary

Create a short quiz or game to assess the students' understanding of different kitchen tools and
equipment. Ask questions like:
1. What tool would you use to measure liquids?
2. Name three appliances commonly used in the kitchen.
3. Which tool would you use to chop vegetables?

Assessment

In pairs or small groups, ask the students to create a poster or slideshow presentation showcasing
different kitchen tools and equipment. They should include pictures, labels, and a brief description of
each item. This task will assess their ability to identify and describe various tools and equipment
accurately.

Differentiation:
For students with Special Educational Needs, provide visual aids, simplified explanations, and extra
support during the warm-up activity and main teaching. Allow additional time for completion of the
assessment task, provide sentence starters, or assign them a specific set of tools and equipment to
focus on.

For higher achieving students, challenge them to research and present on more advanced or less
commonly known kitchen tools and equipment. They can also demonstrate their understanding by
creating a recipe using specific tools and equipment or by explaining how different tools can affect
the outcome of a recipe.
