Based on the readings you’ve made, answer the following questions.
1. What are the different organ systems of animals?
● The Respiratory System
● The Circulatory System
● The Nervous System
● The Digestive System
● The Endocrine System
● The Reproductive System
● The Lymphatic System
● The Muscular System
● The Immune System
● The Skeletal (Support) System
● The Urinary System
● The Integumentary System
2. Do organ systems look the same in animals?
- Although humans and animals (technically “non-human animals”) may
look different, at a physiological and anatomical level they are remarkably
similar. Animals, from mice to monkeys, have the same organs (heart,
lungs, brain, etc.) and organ systems (respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous
systems, etc.)
3. Why do animals need organ systems?
- Organs systems work together to efficiently and effectively provide all
body cells with their basic needs to carry out life functions.
4. What is the most important organ system?
- The brain is arguably the most important organ in the human body. It
controls and coordinates actions and reactions, allows us to think and feel,
and enables us to have memories and feelings—all the things that make us
human.
5. How many-body systems are found in animals?
- Eleven major organ systems are present within animals, although some
animals lack one or more of them. The vertebrate body has two cavities:
the thoracic, which contains the heart and lungs; and the abdominal, which
contains digestive organs.

Assess What You Have Learned

1. What distinguishes humans from other animals?
- Memory for stimulus sequences distinguishes humans from other animals.
Summary: Humans possess many cognitive abilities not seen in other
animals, such as a full-blown language capacity as well as reasoning and
planning abilities.
2. Which two systems are the most important in regulating the internal
the environment of animals?
- Animals have two major systems for coordinating and controlling
responses to stimuli: the endocrine system and the nervous system. In the
endocrine system, signaling molecules released into the bloodstream by
endocrine cells are carried to all locations in the body.
3. How are plants and animals different in terms of organ systems?
- In plants, just as in animals, similar cells working together form a tissue.
When different types of tissues work together to perform a unique function,
they form an organ; organs working together form organ systems. Vascular
plants have two distinct organ systems: a shoot system, and a root system.

I have learned that all cells need oxygen, the crucial ingredient for extracting energy from
organic compounds.

I want to learn more about the unique characteristics

of the different organ systems in representative animals in the succeeding lessons.
