1.) For starters, Jodi has her hair on fire because she learned over the Bunsen burner
when still on. She could have easily avoided this accident by tying back her hair,
staying a safe distance away from the lit burner, and turning it off when you’re not
using it. Since she’s dealing with fire and heating materials, she also should have
worn safety goggles, gloves, and a laboratory apron. Another unsafe activity is that
Mac is pointing the opening of the test tube towards Jodi while he is heating it with the
burner. He should instead point the test tube away from himself and others to avoid
someone getting hurt when an accident happens.

2.) Instead of Kimberly using a fire extinguisher to put out the flame on Jodi’s hair, she
should have used a fire blanket to smother the fire, preventing any oxygen from going
to the fire. They are more appropriately used for situations when a person is on fire.

3.) In the illustration, Rick is trying to smell the odor of the chemical. He did this by directly
inhaling the odor. This is rather an inefficient and unsafe technique. Instead, he should
use the wafting technique. This is when you waft or fan the fumes of the chemical
toward your nose with one hand. Don’t breathe it in, but bring in just enough to make
sense of the smell.

4.) No, they are not. It seems like Sarah is mixing unknown chemicals with no labels on
their containers. This behavior is quite dangerous for her and her fellow classmates.
